Scarborough: I must now question my long-held beliefs about guns
I knew that day that the ideologies of my past career were no longer relevant to the future that I want, that I demand for my children. Friday changed everything. It must change everything. We all must begin anew and demand that Washington’s old way of doing business is no longer acceptable. Entertainment moguls don’t have an absolute right to glorify murder while spreading mayhem in young minds across America. And our bill of rights does not guarantee gun manufacturers the absolute right to sell military-style, high-caliber, semi-automatic combat assault rifles with high-capacity magazines to whoever the hell they want. It is time for Congress to put children before deadly dogmas.

Strange that Hermit Gosnell didn’t cause a national discussion about overturning Roe v Wade and the reason to re-write all abortion laws.

Wait, Morning Schmo is an anti-constitution RINO?
Who knew?

Again, how would banning that have made any difference with regard to what happened in Connecticut?

.223 is not a “high caliber”, Joe. And “military style” and “assoult rifle” have absolutely no meaning or bearing on the capability of the weapon. You could buy a Mini-14 “ranch rifle” and it’s functionally no different than an AR-15.
JeffWeimer on December 17, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Nothing proposed would have stopped what happened at Sandy Hook.
If it couldn’t have changed how that unfolded, how will it stop any future version of this from happening?

Anybody ever notice the similarity between Washington/New York and “Pleasure Island” from Disney’s Pinocchio? At some point, everyone who goes there starts growing donkey ears.
tbrosz on December 17, 2012 at 10:37 AM
This betrays his ignorance. Since when is .223 high-caliber? What exactly is a “military-style combat” rifle and how does it make it more dangerous than a hunting rifle? (It’s got a collapsible stock! Look out!)Maybe if I use big scary words I obviously don’t understand, I can get people to do what I want too.
I wish they’d just be honest and say they want to do anything to feel better about senseless violence, even if it has no affect on future senseless violence.

Really? What wonderful new gun law would have prevented the massacre in CT?
gwelf on December 17, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I have a genuine fear we will see gun bans from all this… Not addressing the real problems with all this, but just a gun grab and nothing more.
Gatsu on December 17, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Guns are illegal in Chicago. How insane is that compared to the crime rate?
hawkdriver on December 17, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Big man knows guns. Awesome. What a dude. Ban all guns. Go take your sick hobby somewhere else.
lostmotherland on December 17, 2012 at 10:45 AM
This, imo, is more disturbing than the gun part. Is he suggesting legislation to curb movie/game content? We already have a ratings system and parental controls…does he want a return to the motion picture production code, or the Hays code, of the ’30s?

People like Scarborough and libfree don’t answer these questions.

Scarborough’s transformation is nearly complete. And when that happens, the cocktail party circuit will be his to command.
But who wouldn’t give up his principles and common sense to have unencumbered access to as many of those tasty little morel asiago quiche thingies that his heart desires.
Catahoula on December 17, 2012 at 10:45 AM
The US murder rate is DOWN, and continues to decrease. Mass shootings are lower in the 2000′s than they were in the 1990s. The fact that the victims were young children this time makes emotion obscure facts.

Any minute now.

obama believes he was given a “mandate” so sure he’ll try and grab guns. he thinks since he’s bamboozled the gope on F&F that its full steam ahead.
he’s going to be in for a big surprise.
renalin on December 17, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Make sure that when some criminal attacks you, you don’t call 911. Because the cops would be coming to your aid with guns and we know you can’t have that.
Bitter Clinger on December 17, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Since 9/11, more Americans have been shot to death in Chicago than have been killed in Iraq.
But guns are illegal in Chicago.

Of course not, but Scarborough’s desires aren’t about actually stopping killings. Its about feelings, egos an emotions dictating policy again. The fact that it won’t do one lick of good is immaterial. We have feelings of helplessness to sooth, egos to stroke, and emotions that need to be fed. Scarborough’s emotions are in crisis so there’s no excuse for inaction. We need to do something, anything, and do it right away.

I feel much safer in Right-to-carry Texas than I ever did in gun-banning Illinois.
Why?
Because there are good guys and gals ‘carrying’. I don’t know who they are…and neither do the bad guys.

You have a bigger chance of getting hit by lightning than killed in a mass shooting. But we’ve got to re-organize our society and curtail the rights of hundreds of millions of people to try and “fix” it.

Out of sight, out of mind. Until it counts.
Besides, aren’t liberals all about not forcing values on anyone? My value system dictates that I be trained, equipped and willing to protect my family – with deadly force if necessary.
I’m sure that doesn’t line up with libfree’s value system, but hey, that’s what makes America great: You have the freedom to expose your family to a brutal death if you want to.
Washington Nearsider on December 17, 2012 at 10:52 AM
But then they will all be able to feel good about taking action until the next time we have some tragedy. Then they’ll be rounding up the guns already in homes and they still will be surprised when some mentally disturbed person uses some other means to kill.
katiejane on December 17, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Unitl I hear him talking about banning violent video games, violent movies, rapper lyrics, and pre-birth murder, I’ll know he doesn’t give a shit about “the children”.
SailorMark on December 17, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Do you have anything constructive to say? Or are you just here to shout bumper tickers at people? I’m pointing out that Scarborough is writing commentary on a subject he clearly has no understanding of. If you want to debate specifically how “ban all guns” will stop senseless violence in a practical world, lets hear it. Otherwise it sounds like you’re here only to feel self-righteous.
Meric1837 on December 17, 2012 at 10:54 AM
LMAO! That is classic.

Perhaps you’ve heard of these things, they’re called automobiles, so despite Chicago law legal guns in other areas can be brought into the inner city.
But here’s the thing, there’s hypocrisy on both sides. Progressives, for example, critique the war on drugs as a source of violence in inner city communities. The battles over valuable drug turf are caused by the high prices which accrue from a black market. Yet conservatives continue to support it. Here’s the question, would a national massive gun crackdown produce a similar black market? I think its not exactly the same market. Demand for drugs is higher than demand for guns, and the former require much less skill to use than a firearm. I think we should trade for a few years, end the war on drugs, reinstitute a national assault rifles ban and devote those DEA/ATF resources towards the later. I suspect gun violence would plummet in this country.
libfreeordie on December 17, 2012 at 10:54 AM
So if they have a .223 rifle thats bulky and no rails for attachments, then thats fine right? (major eye roll)

I hear Cuba is nice this time of year. They have free healthcare, too. Michael Moore thinks it’s a fabulous place.
UltimateBob on December 17, 2012 at 10:58 AM
A gun ban would have stopped this.
Bishop on December 17, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Because it’s better to pass laws based on emotions, rather than facts? I think we should base public policy on facts and numbers. Most of of the people calling for us to do Something! Now! want to base public policy on emotion and anecdote.
Most of the folks calling for some new ban have no idea what they’re talking about. That’s why the last ban had such a hilarious boomerang effect. It turned AR-15s from a niche product into the most owned rifles in America.
And liberals claim that they are the “reality based” “scientific” ones.
juliesa on December 17, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Gun violence is already plummeting in the country.
Also – define ‘assault rifle’ for me. Don’t look it up, give me your internal definition. Realize before you answer that ‘semi-automatic’ (one trigger pull, one round) weapons have been around for 100 years, and that ‘one trigger pull, one round’ is the defining characteristic of pretty much every gun in the world. Also realize that weapons that LOOK like military-issue weapons but do not FUNCTION like military weapons are not the same.
Washington Nearsider on December 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I have read on major news sites that Lanza used a assault style rife to kill the victims. I’ve read that he left the rifle in his mom’s car. I’ve read that he left a shotgun in his mom’s car. I’ve read he used automatic weapons in his assault. ???
d1carter on December 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM
This still would not have prevented the massacre in CT.
What’s this magical law that would have prevented it?
Also, it looks like the mass shooting in the Portland mall was cut short by someone their with a concealed firearm who was moving in on the killer (the killer killed himself after seeing someone was trying to shoot at him).
