The heroes of Sandy Hook
Kaitlin Roig survived the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary school. Thanks to her heroism, so did 15 children. When she first heard gunshots she quickly ushered 15 students into a tiny bathroom, and pulled a bookshelf across the door before locking it. Roid told her students to be “absolutely quiet”.
“I just knew we had to get in there, I just kept telling them it’s going to be OK. We are going to be alright,” said Roig.
Roig, who has been a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School for more than five years, refused to even unlock the bathroom door for police. “I didn’t believe them,” she said to ABC News holding back tears. “I told them if they were cops, they could get the key. They did and then [they] unlocked the bathroom.”

Man, that is rough, all those little faces looking to you for salvation and all you have is a tipped over bookcase and a flimsy locked door. Give the teachers credit though, they were heroes.

Good for her – I wouldn’t have opened the door either.

As a 2nd grade teacher and mother of two young boys this has really shaken me up. I have a closet in my classroom that could comfortably fit about 5 kids, but you better believe I’d find a way to get all 17 kids in there if need be. I’d stack them up on the shelves and lock them in. I can’t imagine the horror these teachers and students endured. Lockdown drills are scary enough to the children; I can’t imagine how terrified they were knowing they were really in very serious danger.
I’m thankful to teach in a Christian school where we can pray for the victims should this come up in my class tomorrow. God Bless them all.
