Source: Boehner offered Obama tax hike on millionaires
Signaling new movement in “fiscal cliff’ talks, House Speaker John Boehner has proposed raising the top rate for earners making more than $1 million, a person familiar with the negotiations said. President Barack Obama, who wants higher top rates for households earning more than $250,000, has not accepted the offer, this person said.
The proposal, however, indicated progress in talks that had appeared stalled. The person would only discuss the plan on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.
As part of a broader budget deal, Boehner is still seeking more spending cuts than Obama has proposed, particularly in mandatory health care spending. Boehner has asked for a long-term increase in eligibility age for Medicare and for lower costs-of-living adjustments for Medicare.

Hey great. At this rate the final deal with be tax hikes on those making over $75k.

Over$75k for sure. Over 50K coming soon.

Don’t worry. Millionaires will stop complaining when they realize they’re still f**king millionaires.
triple on December 15, 2012 at 11:19 PM
The proper way to do this is with great fanfare, calling the President’s bluff. Not secretly tiptoeing to his room in the middle of the night. Sheesh! Do we have to do all the heavy lifting around here?
txhsmom on December 15, 2012 at 11:19 PM
Nope. Boehner is the “ball” and he—-as well as we are fixin to get kicked.

This was bound to happen, but I don’t get the Republicans’ tin ear when it comes to public relations. Stop making it seem like the President is the one being reasonable!

Would be kind of fun to see someone pull the same negotiating tactic my Dad would use on me:
Dad: Ok, be home by 10.
Me: 10:30?
Dad: 9:45.
Ok, you don’t accept the offer to raise taxes on those making over $1 million, how about on those making over $2 million?
Left Coast Right Mind on December 15, 2012 at 11:25 PM
Well sure because millionaires automatically leave their sense behind at the first million they earn.
Dude makes $10 million a year and the government takes $9 million in taxes, dude should be happy because he’s still a millionaire. Good times.
Bishop on December 15, 2012 at 11:26 PM
Yeah, those poor, poor millionaires. I heard some only have three cars.

Cue the over-reaction.
No one knows the details at all, but the whining faction of the conservative base will whine.
Boehner can make this proposal with so many poison pills that he knows the president wont bite. Meanwhile, he gains the high-ground, exposes Obama as a rigid ideological fraud.
Its all negotiating tactics. Dems are good at it. Conservatives are stupid and irrational.

Fundamental misunderstanding of the debt ceiling. I don’t blame you – fox and republican leadership have deliberately mislead the public on this issue.
Raising the debt ceiling doesn’t give Barack an unlimited credit card. He can’t spend anything extra. What it does is it gives the US government the right to pay back what it’s already spent.
triple on December 15, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Wouldn’t it be great if we had a governmental form where legislation of this type could be… oh I dunno… debated at a public forum and the legislation hashed out and then voted on instead of two people coming up with a backroom deal and then doing a card check?
I think that’d be a great idea…

I think the reason you think I’m a troll is because you think dissenting opinion (i.e. a lively debate) is bad. I don’t subscribe to that. People arguing with each other is good for democracy.

Bush didn’t throw us into recession, jackwad. Pelosi did.
wolly4321 on December 15, 2012 at 11:55 PM
Regurgitating stale drivel doesn’t help your cause. Do you know what year the US government brought in the most tax revenue? After accounting for inflation? And you can thank the GSE’s for the recession and Senator Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Chris Dodd who protected them from overhaul while taking considerable campaign contributions from them.
MechanicalBill on December 15, 2012 at 11:56 PM
See, that’s your problem. You automatically assume that I’m a Republican. (I’m an Independent Conservative). Your posts paint you as a dyed-in-the-wool “Liberal”. I’d love to discuss this some more but it appears that your mind is made up as to where I stand and I don’t really think we’re going to come to an agreement on anything, so have a good night. If it makes you feel better, “You win”.

Maybe the problem is we have an economy where we’re just glad when the rich are kind enough to give us a little something. So we don’t raise their taxes, because then they might not.
Sure, the poor suffer, but who cares about them? They don’t have money.

They were talking about congress giving up its responsibility to be involved in raising the debt ceiling. That’s what obama has said he wants. He’ll probably get it eventually. We know what raising the debt ceiling is, lightweight.

Spending that hasn’t been added to the debt yet isn’t on the credit card yet. Credit cards will reject a monthly payment they’ve covered 100 times if its past the limit

Nope. Try again. I don’t suffer. Maybe the problem is we have a gubmint spending uncontrollably looking to steal. You steal it from the people that pay me? THAT’S when I suffer you delusional marxist, fascist idiot.

Or maybe you do, and you just want to ruin the economy for kicks? That’s worse.

If the debt ceiling were not raised the US would not default dumbass.
Revenues are $240 billion a month and debt service is under a $100 billion. Chaos and havoc yes, default no.
