if someone in your household is “not okay”, keep your guns safely locked. or not have guns at all, better yet. she was living in the fifth safest city in the nation.
YOU are an idiot. This man wanted to kill someone, and there is many more ways to kill someone. On a thread yesterday, someone posted a link to a Chinese guy who took out 22 people in a school in China using a knife. The systemic problem isn’t guns; it is violence and mental illness…
The mother has been described as a gun collector although I probably wouldn’t use that term if all she had were the guns already described. She also apparently took her children shooting. Hardly sounds like a “nut.”
IMO she was murdered because she wouldn’t cooperate.

How about institutionalizing the person who is ‘not okay’ instead of restricting your own freedom?
Had this madman chosen to run down a pack of kids with his mom’s car, should she have biked to her job because someone in her house was ‘not okay’?
Had he used a knife, should the mother have used all plastic silverware in her house?

I gave you the benefit of doubt for your first statement. Now you’re just being an idiot.
A dead person is responsible for someone else’s action committed after that person has died? You are the mental case.

your freedom to own more than the minimum firepower you need for self-defense is not worth these lives, sorry.
for some reason i don;t hear of madmen running down children with cars, mostly because it’s a much less glorified way to do it – less appealing to maniacs.
if he had used a knife, all of the victims would likely be alive.

Do we have any evidence that the guy showed even the slightest inkling that he would possibly do something like this? Your comment implies irresponsibility in that his mother “knew” he was “a madman” who would go off if he had access. Did she keep them locked but somehow managed to gain access without her knowledge? We don’t know that, either. Too many conclusions jumped to in that one little sentence to suit me.
Did you know that the worse school massacre in the U.S. happened in 1927 and did not involve guns at all? And how can you say all of the victims would have been alive if he used a knife?

Mary Jo Kopechne, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
It’s a selective statement of a non-fact. What she had cannot in anyway be described as an “arsenal”. What we know right now is two pistols and one rifle; and the rifle was not used. You used the term “arsenal” to attach an emotionally loaded word with all sorts of connotation that skews actual facts. But keep blaming other people and things rather than the evil nutcase himself. Hey, he was also a product of the Public School System…that’s a statement of fact. What are our schools doing to produce such killers? We need a national dialogue.

A. Not your decision to make, just like you don’t get to decide the ‘minimum’ amount of free speech I need. Sucks, I know, because you’re a fascist, but hey, I don’t make the rules.
B. Take away guns, and they’ll find another way, ‘glorified’ or not. Guns are only a tool.
C. Really? A class full of Kindergarteners is going to fight off an adult male with a knife?
Oh I got it. It’s the dead mother’s fault. Nice. Go away.
Weight of Glory on December 15, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Yeah. She was.
She initated the divorce.
She took the shooter to the range, from an early age.
The shooter had an alteraction at the school two days earlier.
Did she know? Did someone call her? If so, what was her response?
If she didn’t know, then we have a young male, in the midst of losing his mind, and she had no idea he was starting altercations in elementary schools.
This is why you guys are going to lose the gun debate.
The gun owner failed her responsibilities.
She dissolved the marriage and went into some seclusion with the son, according to cousins, where neither of them worked but survived on 300K in alimony.
You know what that says?
Same thing about Loughner’s and Holmes family.
I’m hoping a trail appears that does show she knew he needed to institutionalized, and that’s what set him off.
If not, she trained a mentally unstable kid how to fire a gun, removed his fatherly supervision, and thought she could sit on him for days, months and years.

we won’t know how much responsibility the mom had until all of the details come to light. we know that she owned those guns, including the bushmaster, in one of the safest places to live on the planet. people who knew the family reportedly said that the kid was “not okay.” even if he had been a perfectly fine kid, those guns are still hers, and as a gun owner she has some responsibility to make sure that her guns are not used to commit a crime.
Blowback

it came handy that the mom was a gun nut.

So, someone who wants to kill will not be deterred by the strictest gun laws in the nation even if it means killing your own mother to obtain guns?
OK. We need more guns laws. At least one that prohibits killing one’s mother to obtain guns.

That’s strange. It’s almost as if those who wont flinch at killing children also don’t care to violate gun laws and obtain them illegally anyway.

Once again…YES! You seem to be confusing murderer for victim. Let me help.
Dead mother who legally enjoyed firearms and never killed anyone while doing so = victim.
Evil son who was already restricted from purchasing firearms, having STOLEN them from his mother = murderer.
This is an important distinction to make, don’t you think?
