How to rebuild the GOP brand: Return to federalism
What’s the alternative? Well, if the game is rigged against you, continuing to play the game is the very definition of idiocy. You have to change the rules.
My own view is that conservatives should recommit themselves to federalism and states’ rights. The party of Lincoln should protect core civil rights, but beyond that, states and localities should be given as much freedom as they can handle. If California wants to become Sweden with better weather, let it. If Texas wants to become Singapore on the Rio Grande, great, go for it. And the same principle goes for cities and towns within those states.
Of course, conservatives already say they believe in federalism, but they rarely demonstrate it save when convenient. Which brings me back to the question of fidelity to principle. In principle, Republicans should look at the monumental clutter in Washington like a boat with too much ballast to stay afloat: When in doubt, throw it overboard.

Perfectly happy to oblige, once you get rid of the entitlement state.

Precisely. Stop with your big government republicanism and return to our roots of actual small government, limited foreign intervention, individual liberty and federalism. Embrace nullification as a way to push back and somewhat limit the federal governments power.

This is so true. There are plenty of “conservatives” out there that just love themselves some big powerful intrusive government.

Yes. The problem is every interest group (homosexual marriage, abortion rights, legalizing marijuana, etc.) then becomes a “core civil right” to the group’s constituents (as abortion has become).

Great idea, but I don’t think this will go very far to win many 0bama voters to our side.
The Democratic Party machine (and the government-run school system) has dumbed them down so far that they don’t understand how our government is supposed to work.

It’s amusing that the thread directly beneath this one discusses Obama claiming to be a moderate (R).

Why not go further than Federalism? Why not end the United States altogether, break up into our constituent nations (of which there are at least 3) and enter into a defensive treaty. That way, the south can be the south, California can be California, New England can be New Englad, and we can stop trying to force our beliefs on one another.

They must literally rename it “The Cut Federal Spending Party” because that’s the only thing that the electorate can understand and agree with. And the media will not be able to distort the party motive.
