RNC may try to limit number, format of debates in 2016
PRIEBUS: One of the major topics that people discuss is the debate issue — controlling the debates and tying the nomination process to the debate calendar is something we’re going to look at. Now, we didn’t have that opportunity two years ago; there is no mechanism to tie the nomination process to the debate calendar. But we have that opportunity now. We can do that with a three-quarters vote of the Republican National Committee. Here’s a hypothetical. The RNC could hypothetically say, “Look, here’s the debate calendar. Here are the moderators. We’re going to have one debate a month starting on this day.” And adherence to the calendar will be a requirement to achieving the nomination to the presidency — either through bonus delegates or penalties of delegates subtracted. There is one major reason that a presidential candidate needs the Republican party: To get on the ballot in November, a presidential candidate must get a majority of delegates at a national convention to vote for him or her. If the presidential candidate can’t make that happen, he or she is not on the ballot. So that is one idea that we will be looking at.
If you have ten presidential candidates, and seven out of ten or eight out of ten will take whatever two-hour slot that is open to them, then you end up with a debate any time some cable network decides to hold one. You can’t control that situation. Our endeavor is to come up with some idea that helps us control that situation.

Close the primaries to Republicans only.

Can’t fix stupid.
They need to not have debates with the liberal mods.
Why are they negotiating this now?

Rest assured – the RNC will work hard to make the WRONG decision.

- Close the primaries.
- NO liberal moderators in primary debates.
- At least one presidential debate with a conservative moderator.
Of course, the RNC will be too gutless to end up doing any of these things.

Can we put stiff limitations on the RNC elitist snobs who keep losing us these elections instead?

Do. Or do not. There is no try.

As everyone is rightly thinking, close the primaries GOP.
At least in the very early, critical ones like New Hampshire.
I’m sure the national GOP has a bit of influence in a matter like this, but New Hampshire conservatives NEED TO GET INVOLVED with the state party to influence this. This part is essential.

Fewer debates, but with George Snuffelapagus still as a moderater will mean the next War on Women has even more influence next time. It’s clear now that the establishment thinks it’s great when liberals pick our nominee. The more moderate the better.

How about we concentrate on better candidates? Or, did I miss the memo on who the next “it’s his turn” candidate will be?

Could we get rid of Republican consultants?

First off, the RNC having more control over the process solves nothing. The RNC represents the establishment, moderate wing of the party. Plus the RNC can be counted on 100% of the time to make the wrong decision.
Second, the number of debates in the primaries was not the problem. The choice of moderators was. No leftwing moderators. Period.
And, third, these aren’t the debates we should be looking at anyway. The debate system that needs to be fixed is the general election debate system. The Commission on Presidential Debates needs to go. The formats of the debates need to change. And we desperately need different moderators.
In a general election, I’m okay with some leftwing moderators. But we need to balance that with some conservative ones too. If you’re going to have a Bob Schieffer (sp?) moderating, then have a Brit Hume or Chris Wallace too.

Can we please stop having Democrat operatives moderate the debates too…?
That might be nice.
NeoKong on December 12, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Have candidates ask ALL questions.
Moderators are just time keepers.
GardenGnome on December 12, 2012 at 1:54 PM
…because the less voters know about candidates, the better.

- Closed primaries, period.
- Only primaries, no more “caucuses” nonsense.
- Reschedule primaries: the 10 states that votes the highest percentage republican in the last elections should be held first, next ten a couple weeks after that, etc. This letting blue states go first in the GOP primaries is insanity.
- Letting the left wing media control the debates, is beyond stupid, fix it.

1 or 2 a month though the primary season beginning in January 2016. That’s plenty enough. Anything else is stupid.
And, tell CNN and NBC to GFT.
Moesart on December 12, 2012 at 2:16 PM
And get rid of that Iowa and New Hampshire crap. I don’t care about tradition.
Start elsewhere.

Three suggestions for debates.
FIRST, the debates should act as a “funnel.” The first debate or two should be open to just about anyone who wants to run. Then, as debates continue, the numbers of candidates should be dropped until only 4-5 remain.
SECOND, the debates should not start until Labor Day in 2015. The first debate we had this season was May 5, 2011 in South Carolina. After about the 15th debate the candidates run out of gas and resort to mudslinging. Mudslinging only helps Democrats. (See, e.g., Gingrich starting the “Romney-as-corporate-raider” meme at least 6 months before Obama picked it up).
THIRD, control the moderators. The RNC allowed too many Democrats to come in (MSNBC, Stephanopoulos, etc.) and use our primary debates as a way to attack the GOP as a whole. Replace the blatantly partisan Democrats with bloggers–I’d love to see a debate jointly moderated by Ed Morrissey, Glenn Reynolds and John Hinderaker.
