Children who grow up without fathers tend to fall into patterns of destructive behavior — from drug use and truancy to early promiscuity, delinquency and, in too many cases, incarceration. It isn’t the fault of the mother who marries the father of her children before she has them and then the father leaves her. But the rest of these mothers who choose to be promiscuous and irresponsible are entirely at fault. I would rather see these children born than aborted, but these women who get pregnant are completely at fault for their lifestyle choice.

Last I checked, except in cases of rape, it takes the voluntary action of two people to produce a child. Now, sometimes a man just turns out to be a jerk and there’s nothing you can do about. But how often did these women sleep with men they should not have slept with? How many of these women insist that they will not sleep with a man until they are married or, at the very least, until he has demonstrated a serious commitment to her? How many of these women are perpetuating the behavior of the men by not providing any negative consequence for it, as women in generations past did?
No, except for extraordinary circumstances, whenever a child grows up in a fatherless household, BOTH parents are to blame.

I think there is enormous peer pressure within poor black communities around condom use. That if you use a condom you may be “gay” because condom use is about protecting from HIV. That if you use a condom its not “real” sex and that if you “really loved” x or y person you would trust him to let it happen unwrapped. I think young women who are desperate to feel valued in a society or family situation that rarely sends them evidence that upward mobility is possible or even that they are beautiful (this is why people got all excited about the one black Disney priincess, and why negative reaction to it was so infuriating). I think its a complex web of factors. I think some solutions is destigmatize abortion, make it readily available and inexpensive, preach condom use, rather than abstinence in the schools, and get “faith based initiatives” out of anti-poverty work. They preach rather than teach people skills for self esteem and survival.
