Study: Atheists around world suffer persecution, discrimination
y on Monday.
According to its survey of some 60 countries, the seven where expression of atheist views or defection from the official religion can bring capital punishment are Afghanistan, Iran, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
The 70-page report lists no recent cases of actual execution for “atheism” — but researchers say the offence is often subsumed into other charges.
In a range of other countries – such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait and Jordan – publication of atheist or humanist views on religion are totally banned or strictly limited under laws prohibiting “blasphemy”.
In many of these countries, and others like Malaysia, citizens have to register as adherents of a small number officially-recognized religions — which normally include no more than Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam.

And by “around the world” we mean “in Muslim countries”.

naaa, we like to annoy believers and keep our heads in our shoulders..
nathor on December 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM
There is a problem with this? Atheists in America cause persecution and discrimination. Seems to me that the rest of the world has the right way of treating them, compared to here in America where we allow a minority to bully us and get rid of our traditions. Atheists are the useful idiots of the illiberal regressive left, even when they erroneously label themselves conservative because they believe in fiscal restraint.
astonerii on December 10, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Huh. Really. I wonder how they treat Christians.
Russia. Yeah, they’ve been giving the Orthodox Church pride of place for a while now. Wait. I’ve got a feeling i’m forgetting something.
I’ll go out on a limb here and say that this is another case of crying wolf.
Anyone who knows how directly atheist governments tend to run things might give a dark chuckle about the charges they’re leveling.
Prufrock on December 10, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Muslims out whine atheists plus they will cut your throat. Your argument is invalid.

Atheists whining…why is that not a surprise?

They should get used to it since they are all going to burn for eternity.

It says a lot about you that you actively seek to annoy those who don’t subscribe to your belief set. Aside from Muslims, many of whom will kill you for refusing to accept Islam, I can’t think of a more intolerant group.
The Count on December 10, 2012 at 11:10 AM
There is a difference between free thinkers who dispute with official religion and our own Fundagelical Atheists. What theists find most annoying in the First World atheists is the belief that non-religious people’s deeply held beliefs about life, the natural order of the Universe, and the basis for morality are non-religious simply because these beliefs are held by an atheist. Furthermore, because these beliefs are “non-religious” they are not subject to the rules secular society sets up to keep religions from imposing on one another.

If only there were something those countries had in common, maybe whe could combat this epidemic.

A symbolic and utterly toothless body.
And Jeffrey Dahmer has more popular than the Church of England in Britain.
Aside from that, this article is truly a journalistic masterpiece.

Maybe the muslims got pissed when the atheists demanded that innocuous Ramadan displays be removed because their sensitive feelings were being hurt.
Oh wait…that only happens here with Christmas.

Isn’t that odd because as a believer I have zero problem that you don’t. Only that some of your cohorts seem to confuse the establishment part of the Constitution with the prohibition of free exercise.
Cindy Munford on December 10, 2012 at 11:25 AM
It only seems like an eternity. Maybe it is an immeasurably short time. Time is kind of tough to measure in a timeless realm.

AllahPundit hardest hit. I mean, really! Honest to G.., uh … you know what I mean. And he’s a beta-male. He’s ridiculed and marginalized and probably disenfranchised everywhere.

So in other words, they have a lot more in common with Jews and Christians than they thought.
greggriffith on December 10, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Big deal. None of the members of the House of Lords are elected and the house can’t prevent legislation from becoming law, except in a very few and limited situations. The Lords is not the British equivalent of the US Senate.
Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, is a Fabian Socialist, who was one of the leaders in the fight to allow gays priests in the CofE; however, he opposes gay marriage. As a result of Muffin and the Tories apparent kamikaze mission to force SSM on the UK — despite the fact that the EU Constitution would almost certainly force both the CofE and the Catholic Church in England to conduct gay marriages, the Archbishop has announced that he is stepping down.
[For whatever reason - historical British public school (public schools = Eton, Harrow, Westminster, St Paul's, etc) boy experimentation with homosexuality??? - Cameron & Co are focused on SSM legalisation like a laser or like Obama is on jobs while the overwhelming majority of the population is like "Hey, enough with the SSM. Can we worry about this double-dip recession right now? We'll take a look at Tim and Jim's wedding invite mock-ups when things get better economically.]
I don’t oppose SSM, but I do oppose requiring any religious institution to perform gay marriages just as I an against the Obamacare contraception/abortifacient/sterilisation mandate on employers with a deeply-held religious objection AND I AM AN ATHEIST.
Resist We Much on December 10, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I think it was more the courts that were confused. The amendment is very precise and clear but the courts have decided that “Congress” translates to all public institutions and private citizens located in those public institutions. Hence little Johnny is not allowed to ware a cross or hand out religious themed Xmas cards at school. This practice has also invaded private companies and clubs. Like my employer not allowing the same on their property or not allowing any religious expression on their property. Heck, look at how even religiously founded institutions are suppressing religious express on their properties.

Don’t get me started on the courts. We live in crazy world as far as I can tell.
Cindy Munford on December 10, 2012 at 11:42 AM
How interesting that such things happen in nations where Christians are NOT a majority. And I’ll give you three guesses how well those same places they treat gays/lesbians, and to a lesser extent women.
Precisely. When Judeo-Christian values are the norm, everyone benefits. Everyone. Where Islamic values are the norm, sexual deviants (minus polygamists) get beheaded and women are treated like chattel. Suck on that, spoiled liberal fools.
MelonCollie on December 10, 2012 at 11:43 AM
And I should care why?
Atheists tend to be liberal.
Liberals tend to support Islamists.
Islamists tend to kill atheists.
.
Why should I try to stop the stupid?
LincolntheHun on December 10, 2012 at 11:44 AM
+1. It is long past time for welfare recipients, black Democrats, atheists, and liberal women (among other groups) to start feeling the justly-deserved pain their stupidity will inevitably incur.
A little self-chlorination of the gene pool goes a remarkably long way, and we’re long past due for it.

Their day of judgement is coming. They will stop laughing at religion when the devil is poking their tuckus with a pitchfork….forever.

Persecution.org and others estimate that one Christian is martyred on average every 5 minutes.
No story here.
Please move along.

I would tapdance through a minefield while blindfolded if it would suddenly make the buggery brigade undeniably aware of exactly how much danger they are in.
Imagine being dropped in a prison yard full of 100 convicted felons with muscles the size of bowling balls, who haven’t even seen a Playboy magazine in decades. (this is absolutely possible right here on Earth) Now imagine there’s no guards…no doors…and you can’t die. Hope you really like being gay.
All the terror you could imagine from that scenario is the tiniest sliver of the horrors of hell.
Dear God. 30 martyrs an hour…well over 100 while I’m at work today…
S.T.F.U., atheists.

Or imagine having your negative senses increased a thousand fold and your positive senses removed completely. Nothing is beyond God, Heaven would be the opposite, having your positive senses increased infinitely and your negative senses removed.
98.6 degrees F feels ideal, for those in hell 98.60000000000000001 feels like being boiled. Actual temperature much higher/lower.
astonerii on December 10, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Imagine a solid steel ball the size of the sun, and on a daily a butterfly flies by the steel ball removing a few molecules everytime. Now imagine how long it would take for that steel ball to be reduced to nothing, and that is the first day of eternity.
And imagine what those prison guys would be doing to you during that stretch.
Yikes. Hell indeed!
Good thing God sacrificed himself to himself to save us from him.

“others like Malaysia, citizens have to register as adherents of a small number officially-recognized religions — which normally include no more than Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam.”
As well as Islam? That sentence makes you think that it is Christians and Jews persecuting people but the major religion of Malaysia is Islam. They are the ones who implemented those laws there. What craptastic reporting.
theguardianii on December 10, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Yeah…persecution is wrong no matter what religion you are, but when there are many more Christians dying around the world than atheists (and atheists have done a heck of a lot of persecuting themselves!), it’s hard to be that sympathetic. And, like many others have said, notice that it’s pretty much just muslim countries. Go figure.
