“Let it burn,” defined
Like any movement, there are true believers and Let It Burn In Name Only (LIBINO) types. Since it’s never too early to purge a movement of its impure elements, let us lay out some key principles of Let It Burn.
1- America isn’t a conservative country anymore and hasn’t been for a while. Yes, you can point to lots of surveys that show people identify themselves as conservatives and they even say government should be doing fewer things.
The fact is, a conservative country doesn’t “accidentally” elect Barack Obama twice. It doesn’t continue to send Democrats to the Senate who voted for ObamaCare and force the GOP to run as the saviors of Medicare. …
One foundation of conservatism is to see the world as it is, imperfections and all, and not the way we wish it to be. Unless we can admit the reality of the country we are living in, Let It Burn makes no sense.

Let It Burn should translated “Tax Wealth at a rate of 5% for those with an estimated net worth greater than $10 million.”
If the Republicans put forward that legislation, you’d suddenly find the Democrats protecting the rich and we’d reset the argument.

OK.
Let it Snowe.

Not in a million years would I ever get behind supporting something like that. You might think you are making a point, but you aren’t. The leftists want to tax the wealth and whether Buffet cares about his wealth being taxed doesn’t make one bit of difference.
You cannot go against every principle you allegedly stand for in order to “prove a point”. It just doesn’t work that way. Furtyher, you would just be throwing the leftists into the briar patch. They’ll take your enthusiasm for wealth taxes (which they’ve already started, on the federal level, with ObamaScare transaction taxes on property) and just go with it, dragging you along. You might be surprised to find out that a wealthy nation like this can be dragged very, very far and long before it collapses. The Soviet Union went over 70 years even in the face of economic disaster year after year and mismanagement up the wazoo.
I don’t support anything that goes against my principles just to try to “teach the country a lesson”. This country watched the Indonesian Imbecile screw everything up for 4 years and they still voted the ineligible retard back in. This is not a population that can be taught anything.
I would support letting these joke “negotiations” go through and the sequester taking place. That would raise taxes on everyone, which would help to flatten out the tax structure, which is the direction in which we should be moving, not helping the class war against the rich (even against the despicable rich like Buffet). I would never support the feral government moving even further into the idea of wealth taxes. You don’t know where that will lead, but I can assure that it will not be pleasant and I would never be a part of encouraging that, for any reason.

Exactly. Let’s out progressive the progressives by going after the $$$ and propaganda outlets that keeps the left alive. Let’s do it under the banner of “freedom” and “fairness”.
We need a free media made possible by the internet. File-sharing is a right and not a crime. We want FREE MUSIC AND MOVIES and we want it NOW!
We need more affordable higher education by going after the obscene profits made by universities. We also need to talk about the grotesque salaries they pay staff at the expense of the middle class families trying to pay for college.
We need to champion states’ rights and tell the federal government HANDS OFF THOSE KIDS’ POT, YOU FASCIST DEMOCRATS!
We need to end Affirmative Action and realize we are all equal and should be judged on merits. That’s called equality and fairness.
We need to make employers pay Undocumented Americans a FAIR LIVING WAGE that is equal to the pay of American workers. Cheap labor is a crime that is hurting Undocumented Americans and the families they support back in their home countries.
We need to *respect the environment* by closing off our borders, maintaining a healthy, well-educated native population (that gets being GREEN). We don’t need our American natural landmarks trampled upon and littered by those who just don’t get it coming across the southern border.

Only in a generic sense. But social security and medicare are the twin gorillas in the room, they dwarf all other spending put together, and into the future, their unfunded liabilities consume the entire world’s GDP. And yet there was never any platform to slash those. Nor would we expect that because retirees get those benefits and the tea party is comprised heavily of older folks who are looking forward to receiving those exact benefits. Nobody ever votes to take benefits away from themselves.

I can only speak for myself, as someone hurdling towards 60, I would gladly wait, take a smaller amount of SS or stay on my current insurance if I would be allowed. But we can’t ignore that all of the departments in D.C. can take an across the board cut. Not one of those stupid b.s., reductions in the rate of growth but real reductions. There are some that should just go away but that what dreams are made of. I know I am being petty but what do you think the saving would be on the elimination of czars and staff? Still pisses me off.
Cindy Munford on December 11, 2012 at 2:29 AM
No, the leftists want to protect their wealth while making us less wealthy and dependent on them. The promise of utopia and “free stuff” is how they get the power, placate the masses through “free stuff”, and use their power to strip us of our rights, liberties, and marginalize our values.
No, you ditch principles and realize it is “us” versus “them”. It’s better to unite the “us” to rob “them” of their power and stranglehold on our culture and our government.
Besides, no one is buying into the “principles” you are selling if you were paying attention to the last election because they control — with their money — our cultural institutions.
Well, the Democrats are going to teach you a lesson for clinging to your “principles”.
The Democrats are going to have more judges and idiots appointed who are going to shut you up, grab your guns, fill your kids’ heads full of mush, and expect you to slave all day to pay for it all while they get special perks, breaks, and privileges from their co-equals in government.
Why you want to support the rich Democrat aristocracy that funds the American left is beyond me.
Do you honestly think the Democrats are going to make their donors poorer? The Democrat party is a wealthy aristocracy out to protect its interests against the evil white man and his Christian god.
The left has no desire to make themselves poorer, less powerful, or give up their stranglehold on government and culture. They will protect their own because they have the power to protect their own.
If you want to win you make the left poor, powerless, and under the boot heel of conservative capital and conservative cultural critique.
And once their aristocracy is powerless, poor, and ousted; you make damn sure you pull up the ladder AND KEEP THEM OUT LIKE THEY KEEP US OUT.

I like my “Let it dissolve” slogan better. Unions are a terrible idea, especially unions of individual sovereignties. I don’t think all the old soviet states are hoping to reunite any time soon.

C’mon, everybody, sing along! ‘Tis the season, after all!
Ohhhh, the government’s oh-so-frightful,
telling you everything’s delightful,
and since we’ve no place to turn,
Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn!

Great … you guys go and out-left the self-hating leftists. It’s a stupid strategy that won’t work. You will serve only to give the leftists more fuel and you will be part of it. I won’t have anything to do with such stupidity.
You really don’t understand the motivations of the Western left, which is much more self-destruction and “revenge” against everything familiar than their desire to suck money out of the system. Western Leftists are not even close to that rational. They are emotional wrecks who are driven by base desires – and bringing pain to Western society is chief among them. You want to be an enthusiastic cheerleader for that, actively promoting ridiculous and stupid proposals that you will have to own and live with, then fine for you. Don’t think it makes sense or that it will work. It won’t.

Let It Burn.
If by L.I.B. we end up with spending cuts, as little as they truly are , fine.
The “rich” people will shelter their income and wealth, even the liberal ones, to avoid much of a pinch. And the ‘rich in name only’ people, who make over $200k, hopefully will find a way to do the same.
Of course it means fewer jobs, especially at the lower end of the employment ladder. And more layoffs, as small businesses find ways to avoid the other new taxes of Obamacare.
But it won’t matter until we get some real leadership.
So yeah, Let It Burn.
ProfShadow on December 11, 2012 at 4:16 AM
We all know Boehner will ultimately cave to Obama, having held out just long enough for phantom, miniscule spending cuts for Obama to continue blaming the GOP when the economy continues down the sinkhole.
We can talk about Let It Burn and strategize all we want, but in the end, we have a spineless coward leading the GOP in the House. Not as big a coward as John Roberts, maybe…but a coward nonetheless.

If the MSM was doing their job (i.e. being the “impartial” watch dog that they were intended to be) we wouldn’t be discussing this. Plain and simple.

The Republic’s been burning since Wilson.
And FDR heaped huge flaming logs on it.
The Democrats & the Communists (oftentimes one & the same), have been faithfully stoking those burning embers since.
From what I see, there’s a segment of the population that actually votes. And those are the ones that are half & half.
And then you have the ones that do not vote.
And I have a feeling if they were forced to actually think & do something about it, they’d choose Liberty.
These same problems existed back in the Rev0lutionary days.
Will people wake up?
Hard to tell.
We need modern versions of the founders.
And since society has decayed so badly, it’s hard to see when those people are going to brave stepping up.

All bleeding stops…eventually. L.I.B. attempts to save the patient by cauterizing the wound rather than letting the patient slowly bleed to death.

I don’t think anyone with the let it burn mentality is cheering anything. I personally don’t plan on being in the eventual and predictable train wreck to follow. I’m just setting up a lawn chair to watch it.

Dagny Taggart would have agreed with you, right up until the end of the book.

You clearly don’t understand Let It Burn. Let It Burn means to do nothing, let the federal government fail under a fiscal house of cards, and then look to rebuild.

Strategically, the biggest problem is the Media.
One problem I have with the Republicans is their failure to overtly and vigorously attack the Media.
Are they afraid that the Media would turn against them if they did?
justltl on December 11, 2012 at 7:57 AM
No, it is really about sucking money out the system, enriching themselves, and then using their riches to attack us and our values by electing other leftists to power who in turn appoint more leftists to power.
No one wants to rule over ruins, POP — not even the left. The want a ruling class (them) and a poor, uneducated dependent class to rule over (us) that goes along with their values, tastes, and glorifies them.

I will and have.
Big reason I detested Romney is because he planned to shore up the two big gorillas in the room for more generations to be destroyed by.
astonerii on December 11, 2012 at 8:16 AM
Yes, they fear the media and the media’s power to paint them as racists, fascists, tax cheats, lunatics, morons, doody heads, etc. while in office.
They also like the glamour of the media, Hollywood, and — just like Joe Scarborough — land a well-paying gig when they leave politics where they can attack “extremist conservatives” for cash and pats on the back from ruling class.
Why be an outsider when you can be a well-paid insider living in Manhattan, going to cocktail parties, and rubbing elbows with pretty celebrities and the glitterati?

“Never argue with a man who buys ink by the barrel.”
Rush made an offhand remark a few weeks ago, saying basically that ideas or words will not change anything now, only events will change anything. Ponder that.
The purpose of the federal govt is now plunder. It cannot be reasoned with, and neither can those who benefit from it.
Akzed on December 11, 2012 at 9:37 AM
So tell me, oh wise gilled one. What do you propose as an alternative? We made our case (piss poorly I might add, but I’ll leave that analysis to the navel gazers for now) and we failed. Where do we go from here? What “fix” will involve anything except prolonging the inevitable?
gryphon202 on December 11, 2012 at 9:46 AM
She must have missed the part about
Do we have a choice in the matter?
That should be the question.
Galt2009 on December 11, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Exactly. We’re looking at a course correction that will take several decades and at least two generations to be realized.
mrsknightley on December 11, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Oh, it’s burning and there is nothing we can do about it.

Starve the left. Never give to a charity that may help liberals. Send back donation envelopes stuffed with a piece of paper that says GET IT FROM OBAMA. Learn to identify leftists and never give them aid of any kind. Cheat on your taxes. We are in a cold civil war with the moochers and thieves who pick our representatives and live off our stolen goods.
CrustyB on December 11, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Some people can’t take yes for an answer. You won. All we’re saying is go for it. We won’t stop you from destroying the country.
Personally, I go even further with the LIB idea. I think Republicans should start out Deming the Dems. Promise more “free” stuff. Agree to higher tax rates. Just voting present won’t end this soon enough. We have to push it a little.
