At Boehner’s request, he and Obama negotiate alone
At House Speaker John A. Boehner’s request, Senate leaders and Representative Nancy Pelosi have been excluded from talks to avert a fiscal crisis, leaving it to Mr. Boehner and President Obama alone to find a deal, Congressional aides say.
All sides, even the parties excluded, say clearing the negotiating room improves the chance of success. It adds complexity as the two negotiators consult separately with the leaders not in the room. But it also minimizes the number of people who need to say yes to an initial agreement.
“This is now the speaker and the president working this through,” said Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat.

Well, of course. Why would either side want an open, transparent process? Why should either man want to have to hear the opinions of us commoners as they work through the process? And why should those who are only mere members of the Congress of the United States expect to be more involved in the process than just rubber stamping whatever their leader says to pass? It makes total sense. I’m certain this is just what the founding fathers intended when they wrote the Constitution.

I wonder how much Boehner is selling us out for.
The Rogue Tomato on December 7, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Apparently Boehner doesn’t want an audience when he grovels to Obama. How can he get a pat on the head for dumping those mean right wingers if there are people who will snitch?

Did Boehner have to bring the bar of soap as well?
sharrukin on December 7, 2012 at 10:17 AM
The negotiations should be televised.
People should watch Boehner go limp live on-screen so that they can truly appreciate seeing these two jackasses on TV saying they have succeeded in protecting the peons from certain doom.

How short will the negotiation be meaning how quickly will Boehner cave?
stukinIL4now on December 7, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Maybe. On the other hand, I’m entertaining a “Coward Of the County” moment where Boehner finally snaps and goes Roadhouse on the POTUS.
apostic on December 7, 2012 at 10:27 AM
How can Boehner sell anyone out? As far as I can tell there’s no unified conservative opinion (what’s new?).

I’ll guess for a promise and a Minstrel Show.

Hey great, nothing like royalty sequestering themselves and hammering out a deal beneficial to both of them. Meanwhile out here in prole-land, the crops are dying and the plague is making an appearance.

I have a secret microphone in the room. Here’s how the negotiations are going so far:
Boehner: “Look, with all due respect, Mr. President, there’s no way, no how, that we’ll let you eliminate the debt ceiling or tax the rich. No way. That’s final, and I’m not bluffing. I will not budge.”
Obama: “I want to eliminate the debt ceiling and raise taxes on the rich.”
Boehner: “Okay. I can agree to that compromise.”
