WH dismisses McConnell’s suggestion to vote on president’s cliff plan
The White House on Thursday dismissed as political mischief Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s offer to bring President Obama’s fiscal cliff plan to a vote on the floor, conceding the proposal would not receive the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.
“We don’t have 60 votes in the Senate,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said, adding the White House was “very confident” that Democrats support the principles outlined in Obama’s plan, which has met with derision among Republicans.
Carney called McConnell’s Wednesday challenge “the kind of political games that aren’t serious.”

Their problem isn’t that it won’t get 60 votes. It’s that it won’t even get 50. That’s why Reid wouldn’t allow it to come to a vote. That was the whole point of McConnell’s “stunt.” The GOP wasn’t going to filibuster it.

That’s rich coming from you Dennis The Menace and your boss…

Why not call their bluff, Mr. Carney? Have the Republicans on record as opposing a tax increase on the wealthy? And supporting one on the middle class?
Wouldn’t that solidify the public’s view that that’s the hangup?

“No filibuster on this one. If you get 51 it passes”

OK, why the hell aren’t Republicans running ads with this? It illustrates perfectly the fact that it’s Obama and Reid who want to go ever the fiscal cliff, and that they care more about playing politics than solving problems.
BTW, I think attacking Reid and making him the face of the Dem party for 2014 could be a winning strategy. I can’t think of anybody easier to demonize and dehumanize than him. I posted the following at Ace’s a few minutes ago (language cleaned up):

Spending bill.. You need 50+ Country Joe for that.

Running ads? I have not heard any of this mentioned on Fox all day.

I believe there’s a difference between a budget resolution and a spending bill.
Spending bills can be filibustered but budget resolutions – which are done by House and Senate committees – cannot.

Funny that Obama knows his plan won’t pass the Senate but says Boehner isn’t bargaining in good faith.

As opposed to the kind of political games that are?

Ok, so you don’t have 60 votes. Let’s put in on the floor and see how many votes you do have.
Put up or shut up.

Force the Republicans to filibuster it. Then you can argue that they’re against middle income tax cuts and are opposed to the bill because they’re protecting those evil rich folks.
He knows it doesn’t have 51 votes. Probably not even 40.
SteveMG on December 6, 2012 at 8:44 PM
It’s not fair to hold a vote if the Democrats know they’ll lose.
Jim Treacher on December 6, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Too bad the LSM will not talk about the refusal to bring it up for a vote. Instead they will let the republicans take the fall as people who obstructed.

What the frick kind of bizarro world do we live in where the Presidents press secretary attempts to convince people that the concept of putting the President’s plan up for a vote is a political trick?
Jay Carney, why doesn’t the President want to have his plan put to a vote in Congress? What is he afraid of?
