McConnell: GOP won’t hand debt ceiling reins to Obama
n remarks on the Senate floor Thursday, the Kentucky Republican accused Obama of wanting power over the debt limit so Obama “could spend to his heart’s content” and called the president “the last person who should have limitless borrowing power.”
“The American people want Washington to get spending under control, and the debt limit is the best tool we have to make the president take that demand seriously,” McConnell said. …
McConnell responded to Reid: “There’s no doubt about who the quarterback is on the Democratic side. The quarterback on the Democratic side is the president of the United States. And unfortunately, he keeps throwing interceptions.”

Why do I have this sinking feeling that in the end, Obama will
get his unlimited Debt Limit powers….
..oh yeah, I remember who is on the other side….

… For at least another two weeks.

We handed the car keys and a case of whiskey to a bunch of teenagers November 6. Now the adults just need to get out of the way and let them kill themselves.
The sooner they do it the better off we’ll all be.

And what are you going to do, Mitch, when Obama signs an Executive Order giving him the power to unilaterally raise the debt ceiling? A strongly-worded letter?
Mitoch55 on December 6, 2012 at 1:28 PM
This will be one of the cause of Session. Obamacare and this.

Is anyone going to be surprised when the GOP folds on this? /s
katiejane on December 6, 2012 at 1:35 PM
That
Especially when his media sychophants praise his take control approach to the crises at hand.
Keep creating these executive powers big boy, we are going to need them when adults regain control.

Mitch McConnell is a sissy, plain and simple. His little whine fest yesterday with trying to get a vote on Geithner/Obama’s proposal. The man has no sense of marketing or theater, much less the Constitution.

We should lower it.

Unfortunately, we are the ones being taken for a ride, and we are not in the driver’s seat.

GOP: There is no way we’ll give unlimited debt power to the president. No way. Now way in heaven or hell, and we will not budge on this, ever.
Obama: Give me unlimited debt power.
Boehner: Ok.

Reid nukes filibuster..Obama uses his grown up voice to point at the pubs as the fault of all problems since Moses….GOP doesn’t hand Obama the reins, they send them over in a box all wrapped up nice with a note that says..”Now you promise you won’t misuse this…right?“………………..and then everyone disappears for the multi-week paid vacation.

If Obama could do that he already would have 2 years ago, don’tcha think?
The Treasury cannot borrow without legal authority. Period. Nobody would buy the bonds because they would not carry the full faith and credit of the United States. This is one law that Obama cannot skirt, which is why he is fuming so much over it already.
This was a very good floor speech by McConnell, by the way.
rockmom on December 6, 2012 at 1:57 PM
He had an election to worry about. Now, there’s nothing stopping him.
Mitoch55 on December 6, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Not buying it from McConnell and Boehner.
They’re already strapped to a chair and the media is pouring the gasoline on them. Hey guys, if you play ball we won’t break out the matches. So play nice, ok?
They’re going to get burned either way. And they are either fools not to see it or they’re in on it. With the recent purge of somewhat conservative committee types, that’s a 50:50 proposition.

I hope you are right.

If Barry stays firm on the debt ceiling limit being his and his alone, it could go a long way to shifting the blame off of us…It’s a lot easier to make a case for letting us go off the “fiscal cliff” because the Prez wants an unlimited gold card..if that becomes the fight it sort of mutes “the republicans just wanna protect their evil 2% friends”..
Tim Zank on December 6, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I would be surprised. Anyone who thinks the GOP is going to cave on this particular item is hysterical.
Good post.
0dumba isn’t going to get the reins to the debt ceiling, no matter how many Chicken Littles on the Right emotionally invest themselves in that outcome.

A partial surrender is a victory for Obama. He can ask for the whole pie but he will settle for enough to get him through his historic 2nd term.
Then the country can just go FOAD as far as he is concerned – you’ll find him on the rubber chicken circuit or a golf course near you.
CorporatePiggy on December 6, 2012 at 2:41 PM
When the GOP gives him a partial surrender, I’m willing to discuss it with you or anyone who’d want to. Until then, I am not going to allow myself to get worked up over an event that may never come to pass. Of course, you are free to choose such a path if you’d like!
Anti-Control on December 6, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Means one of two things …
1. “We’re going to give him EVERYTHING he wants this is just our typical pandering to the conservative which we’ll retract as soon as possible in order to get a deal with ‘The One”
or …
2. “Yeah, you know all that other stuff that he wants? Yeah … well we’re going to give him all that and more – but he’s not getting control of the debt ceiling … we’ll make him make an Executive Order to do that and they’ll we’ll cry about it on Fox News (but not much more).”

Yes, and we all know – SPEECHES AND STRONGLY WORDED LETTERS are things this President fears.
Are you kidding? Obama LAUGHS at Mitch McConnell every time the guy opens his mouth.
