Rand Paul heads to Israel
Via David Brody, confirmation of a trip that’s been rumored for a little while, and another signal of Rand Paul’s national intentions:
“A top advisor to Rand Paul tells us that the senator will travel to Israel and Jordan for the first time to meet with leaders on all sides of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
The trip will be privately funded, and The Brody File has learned that Sen. Paul will be accompanied by Christian and Jewish leaders. The trip is planned for January. They will tour all of the major historical and cultural sites.”

Were it not for his father…

I see Rand morphing into the Republican mainstream establishment (that’s not good). This conflict between Israel and the Arab/Muslim world has nothing to do with us. Obviously by taking this trip he feels we are obligated to intervene in this territory dispute between Israelis and Palestinians. There is nothing in the Constitution that authorized the Federal government to act as a worldwide mediator in these disputes.

That’s bitter antisemitism right there according to some of the “conservatives” around here. Rand should be taking trips to Jersey, not Jerusalem, if he wants to make inroads with the Jewish electorate.

This is going tovruin the good he could do in the Senate to make money off a POTUS campaign that won’t result in actually being POTUS.

@abobo: What makes you think his primary object is mollifying the Jewish electorate? Most Jews don’t vote in Republican primaries.
Seth Halpern on December 1, 2012 at 9:25 AM
He’s doing it for skeptics like me, not necessarily anybody Jewish. You don’t have to be Jewish to want our ally to have the respect of a prospective candidate.

Can’t hold that against him. I mean Reagans kid Ron is a loon, so if Rand’s dad is a but nuts who are we to judge. Anyway Ron Paul does have some redeeming qualities, I’m pretty sure. Possibly.

… Rand Paul would be doing Lasik in Bowling Green right now…
JohnGalt23 on December 1, 2012 at 11:06 AM
To some extent that’s true. But I like to think this trip is about something more meaningful than simply trying to corral the Jewish vote.

I’m no paulbot. I do like having people with on stage with different ideas. Lets hash them out and see what’s best. I think/hope rand falls somewhere in the middle of his father and the rest of the GOP.

Sins of the father are revisited upon the son?
Red Cloud on December 1, 2012 at 1:16 PM
No big deal to me. He’s learned from what happened to his father and is adjusting accordingly.
It’s one thing to refuse to kiss the pinky ring of the hardcore NeoCon’s masters. But if you repeatedly throw sand in their face, unless you’ve got ungodly powerful backers (see Obama) your political career goes bye-bye.
