Chevy Volt tops most-loved car survey, again
General Motors’ Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid car topped Consumer Reports’ annual owner-satisfaction survey for the second straight year.
Ninety-two percent of Volt owners surveyed by the influential consumer magazine said they would definitely buy the Volt again, earning the electric car the top ranking. Last year, 93 percent of respondents said they would buy the car again. …
Nevertheless, the Volt, which sells for just under $40,000 before a $7,500 federal tax credit, has a devoted following among those who brag about avoiding gas stations. The car can travel about 40 miles on an electric charge before the gasoline-powered engine kicks in for additional driving range.

The Telsa Model S can drive almost 300 miles on it’s batteries.
The Volt is a joke – 40 miles – PLEASE !!!
jake-the-goose on November 30, 2012 at 8:28 AM
I’ve yet to actually see one on the road. What was that “highly influential” magazine called again? U.S. Obama Government Reports?
BettyRuth on November 30, 2012 at 8:31 AM
It’s ego-friendly!
forest on November 30, 2012 at 8:31 AM
Did the survey size include all 10 of the private owners?

..oh yeah, now I remember. Another Muscle car.
ToddPA on November 30, 2012 at 8:32 AM
Two things jumped to mind:
1) I’d love a car that someone else paid for too. and
2) As a Collision Shop owner, the Volt is at the BOTTOM of my list. Absolute cluster-@#$& to repair. I’ve been to 2 GM trainings on them, I learned that I’ll pass on a heavy hit to a Volt. But they probably are the future.

How and why?
tom daschle concerned on November 30, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Chevrolet, aka GM, aka Obama Motors, aka Government motors, aka General Motors
LOSES $49,000 on ever single volt.
tom daschle concerned on November 30, 2012 at 8:38 AM
All you need to do is hide the smoke from these pseudo-environmentalists and it’s “green”. They don’t like it when you point out that it is typically a coal powered car.
MechanicalBill on November 30, 2012 at 8:39 AM
Who buys these Rube Goldberg things beside the federal gubmint and crony companies jockeying for gubmint contracts?
With the price of electricity “necessarily skyrocketing”, who can afford to pay the electric bills?
petefrt on November 30, 2012 at 8:41 AM
The technology IS getting better. The current crop of techs are being dragged into the tech, but the young, ambitious, reasonably-intelligent guys coming into the business are comfortable w/ all the technology. The next generation of techs will be right at home w/ it all. Kinda like: at my house, when the computers or network gets really messed-up, I ask my 13 y/o to fix it. It takes him seconds to diagnose & correct.
JoeAvg on November 30, 2012 at 8:43 AM
So, Consumer Reports is BS. Not surprised.
Blake on November 30, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Of course they say they will buy one again.
Everybody questioned why they bought one in the first place because it is not cheaper if you look at your electric bill nor does it use less fossil fuel if you realistically question where all that electricity comes from.
All it’s promises are an illusion and people do not like to admit that what they believe in is false.
NeoKong on November 30, 2012 at 8:44 AM
What’s 92% of the seven people who actually own a Volt?
Bishop on November 30, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Hey, here’s a novel thought. If we’re going to “tax the rich”, let’s start by eliminating the $7,500.00 federal tax credit for purchasing a p.o.s. car that only rich liberals buy and that the rest of us have financed?
Clink on November 30, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Then why are these vehicles being sold for such a loss? I don’t give a rip about fixing the vehicle, it just doesn’t make sense in reality.
My 2004 Acura RSX was incredibly high tech, super fuel efficient, and wasn’t sold to me at a loss by Honda.
It also wasn’t marketed to solve A HOAX like the VOLT.
tom daschle concerned on November 30, 2012 at 8:46 AM
No, frankly, it is not. Why ? Because no matter how good the technology may be getting, the bottom line is, it runs on electricity. And the electric grid is nowhere NEAR being able to handle the kind of increase in demand that any significant increase in the use of electric cars would require.
This is THE fact that nobody in the “green energy” / electric car industry acknowledges. Well, that and the fact that the price of electricity would skyrocket and that nobody outside of a city could ever use one.
deadrody on November 30, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Actually no. CR’s overall grade for the Volt? 68. The Nissan Leaf on the other hand got a 78. Can’t blame CR for stupid owners. CR even states that the satisfaction rating is only based on 1 or 2 years unlike alot of other cars.
Quite frankly which am I most likely to buy, a Toyota Camry Hybrid with a satisfaction rating of 87 that starts at 22k or a Volt with 92 but starts at 40k? Though my next car will most likely be an Accord or Altima.

tom daschle concerned on November 30, 2012 at 8:47 AM
The difference is that people actually want computers. You don’t have to bribe them to buy one.
Mimzey on November 30, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Heck I’m still waiting on the hoverboard ala Backtothefuture2
tom daschle concerned on November 30, 2012 at 8:49 AM
It gets better. The total range for the Volt? 355 miles. A Nissan Altima will go 558 miles (using the combined EPA estimate) and you dont have to worry about 2 different engines.
Zaggs on November 30, 2012 at 8:53 AM
What ever happened to those? I’ll bet Big Oil bought up the rights and killed the inventor, just like they did to the guy that figgered out how to run your car on water.
Mimzey on November 30, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Don’t be silly – everyone knows that the Chevy Voltobamamobile runs on rainbow magic and stuff, and it makes butterflies and kittens giggle with delight.
Pork-Chop on November 30, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Isn’t government the largest buyer of these things to prop up sales? I bet every govt employee is forced to give a positive review.
GardenGnome on November 30, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Hmmmm….I wonder if the satisfaction has anything to do with:
1) Only rich people can afford a Volt
2) Only a liberal will buy a Volt
3) The US government subsidizes the purchase
So, who are Volt owners?
Rich liberals who got an Obama-mobile for $40,000 off.
BobMbx on November 30, 2012 at 8:55 AM
I thought the butterflies and giggle kittens came out of the exhaust pipe. Thanks for the info…boy, was I gullible!
Mimzey on November 30, 2012 at 8:57 AM
I still don’t know how they insure these cars with their history of going up in flames and worse, setting garages on fire.

Wait until the government sees my car that is powered by unicorn farts. I’ll be rolling in… well, your money.
MechanicalBill on November 30, 2012 at 9:00 AM
So 11 of the 12 Volt owners are addicted to their own farts. We get that, but shouldn’t Consumer Reports place a minimum on how many vehicles are in circulation before doing a list like this?
NotCoach on November 30, 2012 at 9:03 AM
It’s a “reverse robin hood” tax credit. Same goes for solar panel credits for houses. The majority of people that get panels (and the tax credits) are rich Leftists.
visions on November 30, 2012 at 9:06 AM
WHOA !!! …
Don’t misunderstand me. I hate the Volt, the Prius, and the attitudes that come w/ them all. I love my work. I love fixing cars after someone ran it into a wall @ 60mph. All I’m saying is that we’re seeing more & more Hybrids, I’ve learned that once the tech is out there, it will become the norm. Try to find a car w/o power windows.
JoeAvg on November 30, 2012 at 9:06 AM
So government workers? Aren’t volts now the de facto fleet car for gov’t employees.

They actually got the wording of the response incorrect.
92% of the owners surveyed said they HAD to purchase the Volt again. Because their previous one caught on fire.

I am a subscriber to Consumer Reports. I was thinking about not renewing it, this will help my decision.

I saw a Nissan Leaf the other day. Not a bad looking ride.
22044 on November 30, 2012 at 9:15 AM
How many Volts have you serviced?

wildcat72 on November 30, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Bull.
kingsjester on November 30, 2012 at 9:23 AM
I understand the battery life is five years and replacement is more than the car is worth. Disposable cars apparently. Construction is subsidized way beyond the $7,500 rebate. Bragging about being green is only for the 1% liberals. Cheaper to buy a bumper sticker saying your car is batter powered. Tree huggers won’t know the difference and you save a bundle.
BullShooterAsInElk on November 30, 2012 at 9:25 AM
None. I’ve seen 2 around here (Delco PA). I do Collision repair for 6 dealerships, none are GM. We see hybrids regularly, but never a Volt or a Leaf. Actually, the Nissan delaer that uses us has yet to sell any Leafs (and they had to spend the $ to outfit the dealership w/ the plug-in crap!)
JoeAvg on November 30, 2012 at 9:26 AM
