Study: Cellphone use is contagious
Cellphone use is ubiquitous and new research shows it may be socially contagious, too. People are more likely to pull out their phones to check their text messages or email if they’re with someone who has just done the same, the study found.
Researchers at the University of Michigan watched students in dining halls and coffee shops around campus between January and April 2011. They unobtrusively observed pairs of students sitting at tables for as long as 20 minutes and documented their cellphone use at 10-second intervals.
Overall, the students used their cellphones in an average of 24 percent of the intervals, the researchers found. But they were significantly more likely to use their phones (39.5 percent) when their companion had just done so in the previous 10-second interval, the researchers said, adding that this behavior was often repeated.

Yeah, contagious, like yawning. We need a study to reaffirm “monkey see, monkey do”?

I just bought a smart phone and not because I need it so much as because they have become like a watch… They are a statement of status and to not have one or even worse to have an old, cheap one is a social faux-paux.

I’m immune. My wife loves her phone. I ignore mine. Same super Samsung Galaxy SIII and the same plan. In fact, mine is right in front of me right now, discharged from sitting on the desk unused for many many days.

Well, my smart phone lets me comment on hot air articles wherever I am. Right now I am in line at the pharmacy.

Misuse of epidemiological terms is contagious.

So when does use of an electronic device become a behavior disorder?

I have never owned a cellphone. Never will.

Wearing shirts is contagious. Think about it. If you’re not wearing a shirt, and everyone else in the room is, you’ll be wearing a shirt in record time.

Only for the weak-willed and weak-minded. If I didn’t need a cell phone for my job (company supplied), I wouldn’t have one.

Hey, if I had people I wanted to talk to… I would talk to them…
I am not an on-tap message center or someone you disturb because you just found out you like cherries on your ice cream. Great. Loverly. If I wanted a constant and adoring companion I would get a dog. If I wanted one who would tell me what it thought uninvited and at inconvenient times… well I have a cat, so that’s close enough.
Which explains why I’m not on ‘social media’, as well.
