Survey: Americans will end year with average of 9.2 unused vacation days
Nearly 90% of those questioned said they would take more leisure trips on their vacation if they had the time and money to do so, according to the survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults that was commissioned by travel website Hotwire.
Hotwire has a selfish reason for pointing out the survey results: The travel website says vacationers can save lots of money by traveling between Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the holiday gap, hotel rates drop 33% in Boston, 28% in San Francisco and 26% in Seattle, compared with the peak summer travel season, according to the website.
Crowley has learned his lesson. He said he is keeping closer tabs on his vacation time this year. But instead of using his accrued vacation time to travel, he said is spending more time with his children.

It’s called a free 9 day paycheck.

I take every hour of PTO. It’s all I can do to save up 40 hours to take a week off.

I am, this week, taking time off “just because” to burn the “use or lose” days. I have to take 6 days in December for the same reason. Converting the vacation hours to pay isn’t an option for salary employees.
Of course, I’ll have to put in extra time to catch up when I return.

What’s a vacation day?

Same here. I had to take 4 days in Oct and 5 days in Nov to burn my days before my I lost them. Would love to have just worked and gotten paid for the days.

Mmm, by my calculations, I’m going to end 2012 with 27 hours of PTO unused. My boss, however, floats around 180-200 hours because there’s no limit to the amount that can be rolled-over into a new calendar year. And when employees have been with the company for 20+ years, they accrue something like 22-24 hours of PTO a month. Insanity, but a great perk if you can stand being here that long (I’m reasonably certain that I cannot).

But I heard on the Fox News that the majority of Americans are nothing but lazy moochers who hate to work. HHHMMMMMM…..

I’m down below 400 hours now for the first time in quite a while. Admin has been pushing us to take “budget” days whenever possible, so I’ve taken a few of those, and I’ve “donated” chunks of 40 hours to people a couple of times this year when they were out for a while and needed some assistance.
That’s PTO, though, which is vacation + sick days + holidays all rolled into one. I don’t know if the survey separated the days out or not.

I simply cannot imagine why.

12 days here. Saving up for my next maternity leave, hopefully sometime within the next year.

The conversion from separate vacation and sick time to PTO ensures that employees will keep a “bank” of hours to use in case of illness.

People are dumb.. Just take your time off even if you’re just sitting in PJs watching daytime talk shows.

I’ve got 4 days left to take this year – plus 1 week I’m carrying forwards into 2013 and 1 week I’m selling back to the company.
They wont let us sell it all back or else the holidays would have been easy peasy to shop for.

I get 5 weeks of PTO a year – but I can’t take it all. Vacation is a punishment. When I got back from a week off earlier this month I got 1300+ emails in just under two days.
I’d rather work than take time off – only to be punished for it when I get back.

I have 40 days of vacation. Since I have no money and am taking care of my 91 year old father, I am saving them up – I may need them.
I always come back from a vacation to a piled high desk anyway.
