Can’t find a job? Move overseas
To a large extent, this wave of overseas migration is simply part of life in an increasingly globalized economy — and that’s a good thing. That young people would look beyond the United States when considering job prospects is a sign of a maturing country and an increasingly open and multicultural world. There’s no reason that smart, talented people should stay in the country where they were born or where they grew up. Plus, working abroad means learning new skills to be brought back to the United States — assuming you choose to return.
But the fact that so many young Americans are moving abroad of out necessity, because U.S. companies and institutions aren’t paying decent salaries and benefits? That’s problematic. The fact that so many young Americans have lost faith in the United States as a place of innovation and possibility? That’s deeply worrying.
We need to invest in talent, in education. We need to offer benefits similar to those in other developed nations. We need to recognize that working longer hours and “doing more with less” doesn’t create better workers, only more burnt-out ones.

I think that is a great plan! How about all the union thugs leave and get jobs overseas and let those nations give them all the benefits they demand? And if the US is SO bad, how come illegal aliens continue to come here? I know, ‘free stuff’!
I will pitch in a few bucks for airfare if they leave!

I’ll go as long as when I get there I get immediate free housing and healthcare and I can vote and politicians will pander to me before their own citizens.
NeoKong on November 24, 2012 at 11:50 AM
That’s what my son did. Took a job in Taiwan (Good China) when he graduated into the teeth of the recession and only two out of his entire class of new teachers got positions.
He’s finishing his fourth year, and thinking about getting permanent residency.
Dang it.

Brilliant. I love the idea. Let the kids who people were counting on to fund their retirements and medical care leave the country. Just make sure you go somewhere where they cannot get a hold of your earnings and confiscate taxes from you.

The land of opportunity (elsewhere).
lorien1973 on November 24, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Absolute idiot. The only reason there are jobs to be found overseas is that the US is killing oil, gas, and mineral exploration, excavation, and drilling on public lands. Canada and (to a much lesser degree) Australia have at least encouraged mining, oil, and gas.
I guarantee you won’t find people emigrating from the US to go find employment in the EU, and you won’t find people going to many places outside the US for manufacturing jobs, either – not “because U.S. companies and institutions aren’t paying decent salaries and benefits”, f*cktard, but because in the few areas where there *are* manufacturing jobs to be found, those jobs are located in countries whose wages are far lower than those of the US or other first world countries.
I suppose this is the latest iteration of “funemployment” from the knee-pad media?

In other words, if you’re unemployed it’s your fault, not the fault of the GodKing 0bama whom in his infinite wisdom has destroyed the US economy.
Rebar on November 24, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Sounds like a plan.
DarkCurrent on November 24, 2012 at 11:58 AM
I take it Emily is not addressing this to the millions of illegal aliens here.
profitsbeard on November 24, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Plenty of people take jobs in the EU. Particularly engineers and finance people.
astonerii on November 24, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Shocking he couldn’t find a job in the US. Just shocking.
WisCon on November 24, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Why would you move overseas when you could move to North Dakota?
A guy I know up there said last August McDonald’s was hiring at something like $16.00 an hour.
WeekendAtBernankes on November 24, 2012 at 12:07 PM
There are many leadership positions available though.
DarkCurrent on November 24, 2012 at 12:08 PM
There are plenty of jobs here in TX in the oil/shale area. The sad fact, employers can’t find people who can pass the drug test!

Yes, North Dakota. Or not. Hard to decide…

In other words, we need to take even more of these companies money and give it to the NEA. Somehaw I don’t think thats the answer.
Who? As opposed to hoarding all that money like Scrooge McDuck? I think the author missed the point.
Nonsense. Just in the last 10 years we’ve seen so much technology come out of this country- Slightly more powerfur cellphone processors, laptops with no keyboards, and countless MySpaoe rip-offs. A technological revolution!

Being the wife is from Taiwan and my son can speak Chinese (and is working in the Semi-conductor manufacturing business), he’s had this option lined up for a long time.

This is an excellent idea, in reality. I changed careers from law to teaching. Before starting teaching in the school system at home ( full disclosure: I’m Canadian) I decided to come to work in South America for one year. That was almost 10 years ago. I get my annual fix of Canada when we go for vacation, but in reality it has been wonderful here. And the point is that there is lots of opportunity here…many many jobs for trained foreigners. The pay is below what we would expect in Canada or the US but the cost of living is also lower and the quality of life is wonderful. And it is different…if you enjoy experiencing something different and can “go with the flow” it is a wonderful opportunity. Anyone who is tempted should try it.

Ayeah, I grew up in the Midwest and the winters here are quite enough for me. Moving to a barely-populated state that turns to barren arctic terrain 1/3rd of the year? Not in this lifetime thank you.
MelonCollie on November 24, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I live here. Not saying there’s not work. There is & a lot of it.
But you’d have to live in a tent or your car or a travel trailer.
There’s no place to live.

If any Hot Airians are truly facing employment issues, and would be willing to go overseas, email me. I am overseas, in a booming economy.
tommy71 on November 24, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Sounds interesting but you have to say what country and your email

Can’t take the Chinese food anymore?
bernverdnardo1 on November 24, 2012 at 12:38 PM
May all the elitist educators go, and never, ever, return.
YOU ruined America. May you and your families suffer in exile. Be damned.
Schadenfreude on November 24, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Make sure you keep them all there, eternally.
Your anti-Americanism shows, often, subtle as you think you are.
Schadenfreude on November 24, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Not at all. Take your sino-crap and keep it. I’ve been meaning to tell you this for a long time.
You advertise China in 1001 ways. Just stay there, eternally and quit attempting to make the world in her image. She still sucks, no matter what you’ll say – those lights…they cover up all the darkness.

My wife & I will be moving to Davao City, Philippines in June.
But I’ll still always vote & pray for the betterment of the USA.
itsnotaboutme on November 24, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Any HotAirians with a brain, quit feeding the Looters. Starve them, and in turn the moochers.
Schadenfreude on November 24, 2012 at 1:01 PM
What kind of job can an English only speaker get there? Been thinking about it, my wife is Filipina.
astonerii on November 24, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Depends on your skills/experience/education, but maybe you can get hired with a corporation that does business there. Make a US salary in a Third World economy, live like a king.
itsnotaboutme on November 24, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Primarily mechanical engineering. Pro/engineer being my primary skill in it. Certainly getting tired of supporting other people’s parent’s as well as my own and my wife’s.
astonerii on November 24, 2012 at 1:16 PM
No better food, except Japanese. I’m here to stay.
DarkCurrent on November 24, 2012 at 1:17 PM
I’ll take the freedom of North Dakota any day of the week.
JPeterman on November 24, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Seconded…and I really hate the cold.
CorporatePiggy on November 24, 2012 at 1:28 PM
The food would be the hardest part for me. Everything is boiled with anise (blech) and from what I hear you can’t trust the restaurants.
I agree about Japanese food though, I once llived off 7/11 sushi for 6 months and loved it!
bernverdnardo1 on November 24, 2012 at 1:35 PM
It’s all yours my friend.
DarkCurrent on November 24, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Pro/e is big in China and Hong Kong, but the pay rates are not that high, even for engineers, unless you bring a specialty, but expect to be training your replacements.
RINOs are people too on November 24, 2012 at 1:56 PM
I always do. I always do.
astonerii on November 24, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Me too. East Asia sucks.
If I had to relocate, I would go to Switzerland, Lichtenstein or Andorra.
Norwegian on November 24, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Oh yeah, Schad makes a good point. If you’re unemployed, blame the ‘moochers’ and ‘looters’, and a job will drop into your lap. Lol
