What could go wrong?
Leahy’s rewritten bill would allow more than 22 agencies — including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Communications Commission — to access Americans’ e-mail, Google Docs files, Facebook wall posts, and Twitter direct messages without a search warrant. It also would give the FBI and Homeland Security more authority, in some circumstances, to gain full access to Internet accounts without notifying either the owner or a judge…
One person participating in Capitol Hill meetings on this topic told CNET that Justice Department officials have expressed their displeasure about Leahy’s original bill. The department is on record as opposing any such requirement: James Baker, the associate deputy attorney general, has publicly warned that requiring a warrant to obtain stored e-mail could have an “adverse impact” on criminal investigations.
Marc Rotenberg, head of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, said that in light of the revelations about how former CIA director David Petraeus’ e-mail was perused by the FBI, “even the Department of Justice should concede that there’s a need for more judicial oversight,” not less.

If they get ahold of my HotGas posts, I’m doomed. Just lock me up and throw away the key.

But there’s free stuff so who cares about civil liberties anyway?

But Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will, like, tell the kids that this is totally cool and sh– and that Democrats are for liberty, and freedom, and birf control and sh–.

Get out of the Cloud. Storing anything you want private on anywhere but your own computer or server is crazy.

Yeah, but Obama will pay for your birth control, so who cares?

The concept of personal privacy ended with the internet – it’s just taking the masses a while to realize it.

Oh so the Patriot Act didn’t do this already?
Fluking liberals. So sick of this crap.

It never ceases to amaze me the intrusions by this administration, yet never a peep from the leftards.

As I posted on Facebook…
Good. From now on, all my emails will have a built-in signature that reads as follows:
“Harry Reid is a child molester (a friend on the interwebs told me so!), and Mitch McConnell is an affable drunkard. Please send cash!”

awesome… finally a replacement to #attackwatch but without the pesky proactive step required of actually outing your neighbor.

This is why I deleted my Facebook and Twitter accounts right after the election. When I create new ones, I’ll use them just for reading & work, not for posting. I’m making my own email server for private mail. And I’m pretty careful what I post in forums such as HA.

Is this law going to make any difference at all? I mean, does anyone believe that federal agencies give a flying rat’s ass whether or not it’s legal to read your e-mail? Pretty sure they’d do it anyway.

Someone send this to Anonymous. Yeah, they’re a bunch of punks but they’ll go nuts over this.

I wonder what the cops found out about Leahy… it must be pretty bad.

Heck,
We belong to the government, so obviously the government owns all we have.
At least that appears to be the thinking in DemoLibbieLand these days.
It would fit a socialist/communist mindset.

I know this is in the Senate for now, but is it okay yet to say we hope Obama fails?
