The conservative future
Soft Libertarians. Some of the most influential bloggers on the right, like Tyler Cowen, Alex Tabarrok and Megan McArdle, start from broadly libertarian premises but do not apply them in a doctrinaire way.
Many of these market-oriented writers emphasize that being pro-market is not the same as being pro-business. Luigi Zingales of the University of Chicago published an influential book, “A Capitalism for the People,” that took aim at crony capitalism. Tim Carney of The Washington Examiner does muckraking reporting on corporate-federal collusion. Rising star Derek Khanna wrote a heralded paper on intellectual property rights for the House Republican Study Committee that was withdrawn by higher-ups in the party, presumably because it differed from the usual lobbyist-driven position.
There are a number of unpredictable libertarian-leaning writers, including Conor Friedersdorf of The Atlantic on civil liberties issues, and Eugene Volokh on legal and free speech concerns.

Brooks wouldn’t know conservatism if it fell on his head.
Rebar on November 20, 2012 at 11:24 AM
That all sounds good and fine, but at the end of the day the GOP is beholden to Big Business, cheap labor, and sucking up to the media when they’re called racist. It’s kind of like David Brooks being beholden to a milquetoast wimp with creased pants and an Ivy League degree.
Punchenko on November 20, 2012 at 11:25 AM
I don’t think of David Brooks as a “libertarian”.
I’m a libertarian – and I rarely agree with anything Brooks writes – though this article comes close.
I think DB is bi-polar and tomorrow he’ll be back to writing stories about how the GOP needs to adopt the positions of British Conservative Party.

What the he11 is a soft libertarian? Is that like being a little pregnant? Either you believe in the free market, or you don’t.

Arrgh….
Aside from the fact that Brooks is a progressive posing as a “conservative”, his writing is absolutely horrid.
Please stop linking to his clown. He brings absolutely nothing of value to the debate.

Brooks has a major perspective problem if he thinks the Marginal Revolution guys are on the “right”. the best that can be said is that they are not reflexively liberal. McCardle might lean right-ish but again, only lefties see her as “on the right”. But then, this is David Brooks we’re talking about, and the only Republicans he seems to know live in NY and DC. I suppose some Republicans do live in those places but they are not the mainstream of the party.
Palin has been saying this for three years. It’s why I adn others back her as a different direction for the party. Romneyites on this site [*cough*BuyDanish*cough*] insisted that populism of any kind is beneath the Republican party and we should all go be Democrats if we wanted to criticize Big Biz. But now as stalwart a GOPe as Brooks says… the same things Palin’s been saying. And I bet no one is going to call him an uneducated ditz. Huh.

Who ??
tencole on November 20, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I never click on Brooks stuff, but Im wondering: Did he mention Meghan McCain too? Dave Weigel?
There quite a few names missing from the “rightwing” traitor battalion.
“Future” just like “Forward”!
Valkyriepundit on November 20, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Marginal Revolution is neither really conservative, nor libertarian.
MetaThought on November 20, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Go to Hell David Brooks. You are soooo insufferable. You should hook up with Peggy Noonan.

#1 Brooks is a pompous ass
#2 I’ve heard of few if any of those people he mentions.
#3 When did Libertarian become the same thing as Conservative?
katiejane on November 20, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Go away David Brooks! You calling yourself a conservative is about as plausible as me calling myself the King of England!
Just. Go. Away.
