Study: Why pot makes some people psychotic
The genetic marker in question is one variation of a gene call AKT1. The new finding confirms earlier research, which also linked this marker with the risk of psychosis after smoking pot.
The AKT1 gene is known to be involved in the signaling of the brain chemical dopamine, which is abnormal in those with psychosis, Di Forti said.
The genetic marker likely acts along with other genes to contribute to the risk of psychosis from cannabis smoking, the researchers said. Finding the genetic underpinnings of cannabis psychosis may lead to the development of therapies for the condition, said Dr. John Krystal, editor of Biological Psychiatry, the journal in which the study was published Nov. 15.

What excuse do the other psychos have?

Chicken or the egg: Does pot make crazy people Democrats or do Democrats make crazy people smoke pot?
Deep stuff, huh? Take a drag on this…
Glenn Jericho on November 19, 2012 at 10:13 PM
I found a cure. Don’t smoke it.
wolly4321 on November 19, 2012 at 10:13 PM
I would say that smoking pot definitely made me crazy. I was paranoid as hell, socially awkward and had the most ferocious mood swings. That’s why it drives me crazy when pot heads tout it as some harmless wonder drug. For some, maybe (although it’s definitely bad for you lungs), but there are loads of people out there who should never touch it. That doesn’t mean I don’t think they have an inalienable right to smoke it if they want to, though.
Sharke on November 19, 2012 at 10:17 PM
Pot smoking psychos have no excuse themselves.
There is still an open question though concerning this research: What came first? The chicken or the egg? Studies have shown a clear link between psychosis and pot; but are psychotics drawn to pot for self medication, or are they coincidentally exacerbating the problem by lighting one up? What do the usual suspects have to say about this? Be sure to be good and baked before responding.
NotCoach on November 19, 2012 at 10:17 PM
That does it. We got to make this stuff illegal.
oh, wait . . .

These cases associate correlation with cause. Crappy science to arrive at an objective.
While I’m posting, shout out to the ‘Republicans’ who only believe in states’ rights when it is something they like.
ArkyDore on November 19, 2012 at 10:18 PM
Yeah. You know, Ruger has some great therapies for that already.
TexasDan on November 19, 2012 at 10:22 PM
So sensitive. Take another hit on the bong and find some kindergartners to argue with. Us adults are talking about the effects of pot use. No one has advocated keeping pot illegal yet. And you’re right; it should be an issue for each state to decide. I continue to support my state keeping recreational pot use illegal. Now if we could just revoke that gateway to stupidity called medicinal marijuana.

I must confess that I have always lumped drug-taking in with binge-drinking – striving to unleash the chains of reality.
OldEnglish on November 19, 2012 at 10:27 PM
Drugs have no a place in a civilized society. That includes alcohol. Nothing good comes from being stoned and drunk. Take a look at what is going on in Boulder, CO right now.
Name one good thing that came from being intoxicated….

Dood.. i like.. you know.. when I smoked a lot…. of pot.. I …uhh, you know… like…. forgot some stuff, and……..
Uhhhhhhh…….
uhh, what?

Because God did not intend for us to suck on bundles of burning weeds, that’s why.
For all our civilization, we really are back to the ‘caveman’ days…people randomly going “ooh! Let’s eat that and see how it taste! ooh! Let’s throw that in the fire and see what happens!”

Unwanted children resulting from drunken mattress-poundings are not a good thing; if for no other reason than such children were often neglected, abused, or abandoned.
And in modern times they’re often just aborted soon after their incubator figures out she isn’t sick every morning from a recurring hangover.
MelonCollie on November 19, 2012 at 10:36 PM
Oh please. Maybe they could release LESS information, then we’d know this was a really, really good scientific study.
Maybe they could tell us how many of the 489 persons selected BECAUSE they had a psychotic episode actually smoked. No way those people would have self selected for a study about pot and psychosis. Nah.

I guess this is one of those zero-sum games. For an ugly chick to win someone has to lose.

The problem with psychosis is that once the patient is of legal age s/he has to slaughter a school bus full of nuns before anybody can force the patient to take treatment for his condition.
Sekhmet on November 19, 2012 at 10:42 PM
I was talking about the link in the studies. Most studies will be crap until we can legalize it and actually study it with the general population.
ArkyDore on November 19, 2012 at 10:49 PM
Can’t wait for the first big lawsuits against the states of Colorado and Washington for legalizing a dangerous product. (That also goes for lung cancer cases; smoking ANYTHING causes lung cancer, folks; just at different rates.)

Moderate drinkers live longer than teetotalers, statistically.
juliesa on November 19, 2012 at 10:52 PM
If you literally have to get someone drunk to screw you in our sex-obsessed culture, it’s a sign you shouldn’t be reproducing.
If that sounds cold, I’m sorry, but I really think it’s true.
Don’t even get me started. It doesn’t help that kids these days as young as 10 are being hauled in for adult crimes. Trying to convince a judge that Junior needs to be made to take his pills is a lot harder when there are a dozen minors on the docket with arm’s-length juvenile crime records.

Such suits are unconstitutional. No lawmaker, even when the lawmakers are the people themselves, can be sued for making laws.

Rock n’ roll?
John the Libertarian on November 19, 2012 at 11:05 PM
NotCoach, might want to check with your state on that. Here in Texas, the state is fending off multiple lawsuits for its laws- for just denying funding,
michaelo on November 19, 2012 at 11:13 PM
Funding of what?

Dude, I’ve been around stoners. They’d be helpless if attacked by mice.

I don’t smoke pot, and I have no psychological problems.
And neither do I.
The Rogue Tomato on November 20, 2012 at 8:36 AM
“People who smoke pot may be at increased risk for psychosis if they have a certain genetic marker, a new study finds.
“The results show people with this genetic marker who use cannabis are twice as likely to experience psychosis compared with those who use the drug but do not have the genetic marker.”
Gee, two articles about genes affecting behavior in the same batch of headlines.
Since I posted the link to my own article on the subject in the first one, I guess it should be posted again.
Whoever’s posting this garbage is a fuckin’ moron.
