Next for Britain: Banning young drivers from carrying non-family passengers?
According to the Association of British Insurers, which submitted the proposals to the Department for Transport, one in eight drivers is under 25, but they account for one third of the number of people who die on the country’s roads.
It estimates that an 18-year old driver is three times more likely to be involved in a crash than a motorist 30 years older. In 2011, drivers between 17 and 19 were involved in 12,000 crashes of which more than half resulted in serious or fatal injuries.
“I read regular reports where three or four young people have been killed in a car and it’s a new driver and you wonder what happened,” Mr McLoughlin said.

In New York, drivers under the age of 18 are limited to a total of 2 passengers in their vehicle.

….Or maybe they could raise the driving age if young drivers are such a problem.

Now that I could kind of understand. Put multiple underage people in a car with an underage driver and no adult supervision, you’ll get craziness that has to be seen to believe.
I speak from unpleasant experience on this one…a three-ring circus run in the middle of an insane asylum would’ve been more sane.

That’s racist.
Just ban all cars. That would be fair.

…I now have a hilarious mental image of a young liberal punk walking down the sidewalk holding a boombox blaring profanity-laden noise in one hand, the other hand on an imaginary steering wheel, and making engine noises with his mouth.

Hey, it’s time for Affirmative Action Driver Quotas:
~Lib drivers under 18 must carry 3 lib passengers for each 1 conservative passenger.
~Lib drivers using commuter lanes and bridges must have minimum 3 conservative passengers for each lib, including driver.
Ain’t gubmit wonderful!

Please don’t give the liberals any new ideas, mmmkay?

Family passengers? First, they have to find them!
OldEnglish on November 18, 2012 at 1:00 AM
My state of Georgia already has these restrictions in place. And I have to admit it makes it easier for me as a parent of a 17 year old to enforce driving rules that are already in place by the government, much as I hate the government doing my parenting for me!

Yeah and NOTHING to do with driving experience learning how to spot hazards mush sooner “rolls eyes”

New Jersey imposes a curfew on young drivers. Also, they are supposed to affix an orange marker onto their license plate, so that the police will have probable cause to stop them should they see what appears to be an underage driver violating curfew.
It was a “feel good” law imposed following the death of a young driver.

So, if you’re going to drive recklessly and kill someone, make sure it’s a family member?

OT: Here’s a type of story you will never see linked at HA where it’s always the promotion of gay marriage all the time. Though this guy ultimately prevailed in court, they made his life hell. And they will do the same to you as we have seen the left has little understanding of the first amendment.
‘Taken to task for doing nothing wrong’: worker demoted for opposing gay marriage was unlawfully punished, judge rules

I’m not sure about that term “family”.
It’s kind of exclusive and judgmental, doncha think?
justltl on November 18, 2012 at 7:46 AM
actually, in saudi arabia, there doesn’t seem to be an minimum age for male kids to drive. mothers use their young kids to drive them around while they are forbidden of driving themselfs. to note, saudi arabia has one of the highest road mortality rates in the world and its sharia compliant.

Yes pretty close-minded if you ask me.

In the state of Ohio 16 year olds cannot have non family members with them when they drive .
CW on November 18, 2012 at 9:01 AM
All states have restrictions on young drivers – whether they can drive at night, how many passengers, etc.
I’m actually curious as to why there aren’t more restrictions on segments of the driving population proven to be much more dangerous than the rest. The young and very old don’t need to be manning deadly machines in public. Need to go to work? Take the bus.
ernesto on November 18, 2012 at 9:44 AM
At 16, I crewed on a commercial fishing vessel. In an area that can get to well below zero. No buses, how was I supposed to get to the dock to report to my boat?
At 16 I was on my own, with no family support. You sir, are a dumb@$$
DStreete on November 18, 2012 at 9:57 AM
No buses to the docks? If you had any public transport at all, why wouldn’t it go to an industrial area?
ernesto on November 18, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Not every municipality has public transport.
DStreete on November 18, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Where in the heck do you live? There aren’t any buses where I live. I received my drivers permit when I was 14 years old ………….. and, I have never had a wreck in my life. I am now 61. If you want to see some crazy drivers go to Europe. I have driven in Europe and I survived. Keep the government out of my personal life
SC.Charlie on November 18, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Being 61 years of age the next thing I do have to consider is that in perhaps the next 25 years I will have to give up my driving privileges. I will be more than glad to do so. I don’t wish to hurt anyone. I had to take my mother’s keys away from her when she began to have mini-strokes back in the mid 1990s, she died in 1999. It was a hard thing for her and the rest of the family.
