Israel shouldn’t have killed that Hamas terrorist
I believe that Israel made a grave and irresponsible strategic error by deciding to kill Mr. Jabari. No, Mr. Jabari was not a man of peace; he didn’t believe in peace with Israel and refused to have any direct contact with Israeli leaders and even nonofficials like me. My indirect dealings with Mr. Jabari were handled through my Hamas counterpart, Ghazi Hamad, the deputy foreign minister of Hamas, who had received Mr. Jabari’s authorization to deal directly with me. Since Mr. Jabari took over the military wing of Hamas, the only Israeli who spoke with him directly was Mr. Shalit, who was escorted out of Gaza by Mr. Jabari himself. (It is important to recall that Mr. Jabari not only abducted Mr. Shalit, but he also kept him alive and ensured that he was cared for during his captivity.)
Passing messages between the two sides, I was able to learn firsthand that Mr. Jabari wasn’t just interested in a long-term cease-fire; he was also the person responsible for enforcing previous cease-fire understandings brokered by the Egyptian intelligence agency. Mr. Jabari enforced those cease-fires only after confirming that Israel was prepared to stop its attacks on Gaza. On the morning that he was killed, Mr. Jabari received a draft proposal for an extended cease-fire with Israel, including mechanisms that would verify intentions and ensure compliance. This draft was agreed upon by me and Hamas’s deputy foreign minister, Mr. Hamad, when we met last week in Egypt.

What a nut! Shalit was half starved and severely malnourished. He was afforded no rights under the stupid GC. Gershon is just another lefty.

Along with agreeing to a long-term peace, Jabari was also about to convert to Judaism.

Who, precisely, agreed to give Baskin the authority negotiate with Hamas. Certainly not the Israeli government.
Baskin is a nut – it indicates how low the NYT has fallen for them to pretend that Baskin has any credibility.

If he was such a great partner in peace why were approximately 200 rockets fired into Israel in the week or so prior to his untimely demise?

“placed Israel’s peace treaty with Egypt at risk.”
Very funny Mr. Baskin.

Ahmed al-Jabari was Hamas’ Osama bin Laden. AQ has not laid down its arms. Should America not have killed OBL?
They are arguing for Israel to be every bit as captive to Hamas as some in America arguing for the Republicans to become. “Hispanics will never vote for you unless you give them this. Young people will never vote for you unless you give them that.” What they will have is: “Hamas will never stop firing rockets unless Israel gives it Jerusalem or, better yet, commits collective suicide.”
Resist We Much on November 17, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Much the same can be said for Phillip and Nancy Garrido.
Incidentally, Israel doesn’t have a long-term policy of killing Hamas leaders, it has a sporadic practice of doing so until its nerve fails. Again.

He’s tooting his own horn for being part of the group of people who negotiated the Israeli soldier Gilat Shalit’s release with the hamas savages.
This flareup was really only waiting to happen. Hamas has been stockpiling longer-range rockets and now even beginning to develop their own pilotless drones, so even without their constant low-level harassment of Southern Israeli population centers with rockets, or with the border attacks on IDF soldiers, this operation needed to be done. A year ago, now, a year from now… the only difference is how much they’ve been able to stockpile and progress technologically.
Last year it would’ve been 10,000 rockets to destroy, today it’s 15,000, next year it’s 20,000… there’s no right answer.
But anyway, if you’re doing something about it, may as well do it to the fullest extent. The fullest extent would of course involve ground troops and a lot of killing of Hamas operatives as opposed to depleting rocket stockpiles and waiting for next year to repeat the same, but the world won’t let that happen.
For what it’s worth, Obama’s been pretty non-obstructive to Israeli efforts so far, and for that I’d like to thank him. And by the way, that Iron Dome anti-rocket system that’s knocking a lot of those hamas rockets out of the sky was developed with the help of US funds that Obama approved. Not to say that a Republican president wouldn’t have approved it too, of course he would have, but Obama didn’t deny it.
I’ve said before he is an Israel supporter with actions but not with words or rhetoric. So far his rhetoric has been ok. Again, thank you for that.
AlexB on November 17, 2012 at 4:53 PM
WTF?
I think a bit more targeted killing is in order for Israel.
I mean, Obama has his “Kill List” … why can’t Israel?

Yes, and little Bammie shouldn’t have killed Osama, we should have tried to negotiate with him. That’s the ticket.

Gazans had been fired over two hundred rockets into Israel over the past couple of weeks. If anyone thinks that peace was just about bloom, is just not dealing with reality. Israel has every right to defend itself. The leaders of Gaza don’t want peace with Israel. They never have. And, may never want peace until Israel inflicts enough pain on Gazans that they will come to their senses. Meanwhile, they are appear to love war so much that they are happy to live in poverty.
One definition of crazy person is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.
