Twinkies, RIP: Hostess going out of business over labor dispute
Hostess Brands — the maker of such iconic baked goods as Twinkies, Devil Dogs and Wonder Bread — announced Friday that it is asking a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations, blaming a strike by bakers protesting a new contract imposed on them.
The closing will result in Hostess’ nearly 18,500 workers losing their jobs as the company shuts 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide. The bakers’ union represents around 5,000.
Hostess will move to sell its assets to the highest bidder. That could mean new life for some of its most popular products, which could be scooped up at auction and attached to products from other companies.

oops.. that should be: I’m sure Obama is cheering this!!

You don’t have to eat them but you’ll pay a
penaltytax if you don’t.Seriously, I hope someone scoops up the assets and reopens the bakeries in some right-to-work state like Texas. Oh, and tells the union assholes to not bother applying for any of the jobs.

To any of your friends that say it was there time, ask them what makes Hostess any different than GM? Why wasn’t it GMs time when they went bankrupt?
ReaganWasRight on November 16, 2012 at 9:24 AM
Glenn Jericho on November 16, 2012 at 9:27 AM
It was almost certainly more GM’s time than it was Hostess’ time.
But then again, you can’t really have the DoD purchase up entire fleets of Twinkies, can you?
JohnGalt23 on November 16, 2012 at 9:28 AM
When it was convenient, they used the “national defense” reason; that the factories could easily be switched over to producing wartime vehicles.

Guns, ammo and now Twinkies. I see a trend here…
Yoop on November 16, 2012 at 9:36 AM
By the way this is nothing new. In 2003 Cannon Mills closed due to its unions continued demands and lack of concessions. It was one of the largest textile companies in NC and 7500 people lost their jobs in one day (4500 of them were located in the small town of Kanapolis). I think it was the largest single layoff in NC history, but hey…at least the union bosses stood up for their principles. /
ReaganWasRight on November 16, 2012 at 9:36 AM
Good. This company needed to fail. The unions have been rapacious. Management has also been completely inept, not just on the union front, but in purchases and business plans. Horribly run company from top to bottom. Time to give the names to someone else.

Just came back from the hostesses bread store …
bought the last of the rye bread 5 loaves … some wheat and some mulitgrain
bread …. put it in the freezer …. the 2 girls that work there didnt know
when the last day is …. they said the bakers union cut our throats …
the teamster took the deal and told the bakers union to get back to work
and the bakers union stayed on strike … and killed the company …

I came here to kick ass and eat twinkies… and I’m all out of twinkies!
Free Indeed on November 16, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Also here’s two middle fingers up to the unions! !
What happened at Hostess is the inevitable outcome for all companies who support union goons. Whether they know it or not – the union is already making their products more expensive. It’s only a matter of time until they kill their businesses. And when times get tough for businesses, the union says “so what – pay us more.”
Free Indeed on November 16, 2012 at 9:45 AM
It actually was their time. The company was in bankruptcy from 2004-2009, then back into bankruptcy in January 2012. The combination of unions and incompetent upper management did the company in.

Actually, the plant closing law (the WARN Act) was passed in 1988. It was done without President Reagan’s signature, but there was a veto-proof majority of Democrats at the time.
And, when you are subject to the bankruptcy court’s jurisdiction, you lose the autonomy you would otherwise have. You cannot simply shut down without the court’s say so.

How can Twinkies possibly not be deserving of a government bailout???

Don’t blame me I voted Romney.
Oil Can on November 16, 2012 at 9:55 AM
So, saying you’re going to cut employees hours or add a surcharge due to increased costs of Obamacare is a “temper tantrum”, the refusal to accept a paycut and voting to put 16,000 people out of a job completely is “showing the man”.
Right liberals? That’s the message to take from this?
Or was it the idea that Hostess is being “greedy”? You know, all that money they’re hiding from the bankruptcy courts and refusing to share with those union members?
Stupid people are ruining this country.

BigGator5 on November 16, 2012 at 9:59 AM
I know.
But all the delayed bribes by the Obama Administration is now happening. In the larger economy we are hitting the fiscal cliff, obamacare, and dollar printing.
It’s the 3 pillars of the financial apocalypse. It’s getting scary.

Read the title and could hardly believe my eyes. If there was ONE business I never ever thought would go away in my lifetime, Hostess would be it. Their products are every-frickin-where.
My view exactly. I’d like to laugh but it’s not funny anymore.

Of course, being unemployed just because your union wouldn’t make a deal – even with the company’s threats to close – should penalize the workers to not sucking unemployment payments from the taxpayers, OR having to pay union dues.
But, everything is a give-away these days. The union can chalk that up as a victory for the non-working men it represented throughout the long ordeal.
