Poll: 57% support path to citizenship for illegals
Fifty-seven percent of Americans in this survey, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, with 39 percent opposed. That’s virtually identical to results of a similar question last asked in mid-2010, with support up from its earlier levels, as low as 49 percent in late 2007…
In this survey, support for a path to citizenship peaks at 82 percent among Hispanics, 71 percent among Democrats and liberals alike and 69 percent among young adults, all key Obama groups. Support’s at 68 percent among nonwhites overall, compared with 51 percent among non-Hispanic whites. Obama lost white voters by 20 points last week, but won nonwhites — who accounted for a record 28 percent of the electorate – by 61 points. It was a record racial gap.

OK, let’s revist this argument in 20 years.

Libertarians will always be against securing the border because of simplistic and naive economic reasons. Leftists and Dems will always be against securing the border because it makes them feel icky in their tummies and they are economic illiterates.
If we granted amnesty to the illegals (and therefore also to their extended families) tomorrow, and employers were instantly forced to pay them “over the table” and all that, those new citizens would then soon be replaced by new illegals working “under the table.” It’s economics 101.
Because the Dem majority will not, and will never, secure the borders (because it defies their ideology) then any amnesty is a net-lose for current citizens and legal immigrants.
The ironic thing about all this is that the American Left sooooo badly wants to be like Europe (Germany, for example) except for one thing: their immigration laws.

You never know. Signing the Civil Rights Law of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law helped Dems gain the loyalty of black voters for a couple of generations now. A one-time amnesty deal likely wouldn’t be helpful, but a true pathway to citizenship might.

They polled adults. You didn’t even have to be a citizen to answer the question. Only citizens should be allowed to make the decision as to whether or not those here illegally should be allowed citizenship. Do the poll again and only ask United States citizens.

It didn’t help when Reagan did it.

Hand out a highlighter and list of laws to rescind to the population.
Might as well go full retard…

Remember, illegal alien is a raaacist term.

We have always had a “path” to citizenship, many of our citizens went on that path, many of our ancestors traveled that path…
There is a difference between a “path” and a “free ticket”…
right2bright on November 14, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Wrong, it did help, in fact it was such a success the dems had to undermine it and dismantle it…the failure was us not having control of congress, and allowing them to dismantle the law.
right2bright on November 14, 2012 at 3:41 PM
But that was a one-shot deal, which seems (to me, anyway) to be more of a gimmick, as opposed to setting up an enduring policy and procedure for orderly, legal immigration, so immigrants have some certainty about their future and know that if they play by the rules, they will be eligible for citizenship at some point.
cam2 on November 14, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Actually that’s not really a good comparison. Immigration in the past was a much different and more simple animal than it is today. There really is no comparison between “then” and modern America now.

Forget the path. Let’s just amnesty everyone again. Who needs borders anyway?

We are talking about illegals. These people are ignoring orderly, legal immigration. They already are ignoring the rules.

How about a path to home ownership for burglars?
Or a path to car ownership for carjackers?
CorporatePiggy on November 14, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Democrats opposed the Civil Rights legislation. Republicans supported it. How did that work out? And last I checked, blacks weren’t here illegally, they were legal citizens of this country.
We do know how this will turn out. It will not deliver votes to Republicans ever. If there is any credit to be gained from amnesty, it will go to the party in charge. Obama, a DEMOCRAT, will get the credit. Pass another amnesty and the republican party is done. Not only will they not get Hispanic votes, they will lose the republican vote. Romney’s 27% will be considered pretty good as Hispanics will vote for dems in numbers similar to blacks.
