The tyranny of cool
Being political is cool, as long as it’s progressive. Conservatives by nature hate politics and politicians. Liberals love it, because it makes them feel cool. Talk to any liberal friend, and they’re running for office when they’re running their mouth. “I must tell you about the bake sale we had for the Guatemalan water snake.” No you don’t, but you will. Shut up.
Immigration as an idea is cool neutral. But discussing the definition of a border? Uncool, dude. Sure, other countries have them (the ones people are fleeing from); but discussing the possibility of an American border is smeared as racist in origin — the ultimate in uncool. I’m probably racist for writing that.
Who pushes the cool? The media, of course, who seeks to portray anything traditional as silly, dorky, and outmoded. The stuff that worked, apparently, is stupid, because it worked. Witness how the media mocked a gentle mess like the Tea Party but embraced the soiled rag of Occupy Wall Street. To the network and newspaper hacks, one was simply way cooler than the other. One reminded them of their parents, the other reminded them of themselves. Without a bath.
Why is this duopoly, the cool vs. the uncool, so important? It won an election. Showbiz beat substance. Style creamed success. This happens in a culture that salivates over youth, glamour, and glibness. Fashion has no use for Mitts.

Could you imagine Greg Gutfeld writing op-eds for Hot Air?
It would be a SARCASM OVERLOAD.
Love it!!!

He’s right.
I like the coining of “the tolerati.”
The ending is terrific. Don’t just read the quotes.
He’s the best thing about The Five. He calls the Libs out and mocks them incessantly.

When I go visit home and my pappy and I watch The Five he’s like blah blah I hate the five just wait til Special Report and I’m like yo pappy this show RULES

I think he just sold me his book. I’ve long maintained that one of the worst biases is the bias towards the cool–and I think that this bias explains why Obama was elected and re-elected despite his lack of qualifications and general incompetence.
Baerwulf on November 13, 2012 at 11:15 PM
I think The Five is appealing to all ages, but out of all of Fox’s shows, it’s really appealing to young people

I think that Gutfeld should take the Breitbart reins.

I suffer through Bob Beckel–and I mean suffer–so I can watch the others. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that since the show started the others no longer hesitate to call the Dem out.
I like Eric Bolling as well.

That’s a terrific idea.

I don’t think millions of whites stayed at home because they thought Obama was where it’s at and Romney was too square.
Conversely, even the late Lee Atwater was cool. He was a stone cold bastard who jammed with B.B.King when he wasn’t shafting liberals by any means necessary.

No love for Red Eye–Gutfeld’s true vehicle?

Gutfeld for president

I love it but I always fall asleep. I wish they would put it on a bit earlier. Do we really need to seen O’Reilly and Hannity repeats that quickly?
Cindy Munford on November 14, 2012 at 1:10 AM
They have to get Red Eye into a format for everyone to watch, or put the episodes on the web.
It is so entertaining, and I bet it would get a lot of the younger crowd at least to consider that conservatism can be ‘cool’ too.

Got in on Kindle yesterday and it is absolutely awesome. He is RELENTLESS in his mocking — such a fun book. Think I’ll pay again to get it in hardcover so I can give it to a particularly intolerant lib relative at Thanksgiving. Heh heh heh.
Eviva on November 14, 2012 at 7:07 AM
He’s certainly got the smarts, the sense of humor and the attitude down. Hmm. Have to think about that some more. Much as I love love love them both, Andrew Breitbart always seemed like his role was always to be the merry rabble-rousing outsider, even when he was all over the TV. How I miss him.
Eviva on November 14, 2012 at 7:15 AM
I nominate Greg Gutfeld for Secretary of Strawman Annihilation. That would be pretty cool, dude!

I DVR the Red Eye every day. I have convinced two lib friends to watch for different reasons. One was just to see Gary Johnson when I was trying to pull his O vote to GJ. He is a convert to the show. They are “cool” to him and for now it is mainly because of the Bill Schultz his lib sidekick. He didn’t realize that cons could be funny, smart, etc.
One thing about Red Eye that is brilliant is that he has varied-background guests on and has them comment on current events. You don’t know what their politics are at first, but he often gets them to make con arguments before they realize. He never points it out to them or mocks them for it.
Greg had Breitbart on frequently and the two shows after he passed are two Red Eyes I keep. They share a past with HuffPo, I think. Greg feels a strong pull to follow in his steps just like Dana Loesch and others. Good on ‘em.

I guess my instincts were right, that I should not follow the “in” crowd. Romney was most certainly the cool kids candidate for the Republican party.
