“The Optimizer”: How Obama’s data miners beat the GOP in the TV ad wars
Culling never-before-used data about viewing habits, and combining it with more personal information about the voters the campaign was trying to reach and persuade than was ever before available, the system allowed Mr. Obama’s team to direct advertising with a previously unheard-of level of efficiency, strategists from both sides agree…
In essence, said Larry Grisolano, who helped lead the development of the system, it created a new set of ratings based on the political leanings of categories of people the Obama campaign was interested in reaching, allowing the campaign to buy its advertising on political terms as opposed to traditional television industry terms.
“We were able to create a set of ratings based on a model of our target voters, as opposed to the broader categories that are kind of defined by traditional advertising ratings,” he said.
Erik Smith, another senior strategist, said a decision by “super PACS” supporting Mr. Romney to hold off on their first major anti-Obama advertising push until well after the primaries had given the team extra time to develop its system.

I also think it’s time to retire the “snark back” work by the Right. We’ve made inroads with social media — websites by conservatives particularly, presence in commenting on social media sites, too — but the standard has become, all too often, by the Right to ridicule the Left and resort to “snark back” to do so.
I think that’s now having a deletorious effect on voter confidence in the Right. We’re viewed all too often as “not understanding” voters who opt to stay in the Left and could be, instead, influenced to vote Right.
You know how it is that Leftwingers “infiltrate” the Right in comments, on sites? How Hollywood Leftwingers write hateful crud on twitter but if anyone rejects them, the one doing the rejection is damned by others? It’s an indication that the Right is assumed by the Left-public to not be credible while he hateful Leftwinger gets to be or remain “popular” and supported.
It doesn’t make sense socially but that’s the way it now is: nonsensical but that’s what it is.
So I think we on the Right have to try avoiding the “snark” ridicule and retort and try for other communication ‘tone’ about and in response to Leftwing statements, even when it’s Leftwing crud and lacks all value, we have to write something intelligent and at least calmer than they, not pejorative but not weak, just not snarky.
