I thought Broadwell tries to pass herself off as an intellectual of some sort. Why did she half to hire a ghost writer?

Being highly educated doesn’t automatically turn someone into a professional writer. He may have been hired to fine tune a draft, work from an outline… or as an editor.

The unusually close relationship between subject and biographer was no secret by the time President Obama nominated Petraeus as CIA director in the summer of 2011 following his command year in Kabul.

Obama knew about the affair from the time Petraeus was vetted for the CIA job. There is no way the vetting would not have picked this up, and the prez is the only one with authority to disregard such a thing, so he had to know.
