Out: Ron Paul revolution. In: Rand Paul evolution?
In the wake of Barack Obama’s reelection win and ahead of a possible 2016 White House bid of his own, the Kentucky Republican plans to mix his hard-line tea party conservatism with more moderate policies that could woo younger voters and minorities largely absent from the GOP coalition. It’s the latest tactic of the freshman senator to inject the Libertarian-minded views shared by his retiring father into mainstream Republican thinking as the party grapples with its future.
In an interview with POLITICO, Paul said he’ll return to Congress this week pushing measures long avoided by his party. He wants to work with liberal Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy and Republicans to eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for pot possession. He wants to carve a compromise immigration plan with an “eventual path” to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a proposal he believes could be palatable to conservatives. And he believes his ideas — along with pushing for less U.S. military intervention in conflicts overseas — could help the GOP broaden its tent and appeal to crucial voting blocs that handed Democrats big wins in the West Coast, the Northeast and along the Great Lakes…
Paul plans to inject himself into the middle of the GOP’s emotional immigration debate in the wake of Romney losing swing states with heavy Latino populations like Florida, Colorado and Nevada. Paul is working on a novel plan that he says would “assimilate” many of the 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the country. Those individuals, he said, could apply for legal status, but immigration would then be clamped down in the interim. He also says his plan would toughen security at the border.

Bring it…

That won’t work – Rand Paul could be a serious candidate – Paulbots like to avoid the real world of politics.
Galt2009 on November 13, 2012 at 7:45 PM
We can’t elect Rand.
He’s too moderate compared to others like John McCain, Mitt Romney, and George Bush.

Yeah, Ronulans aren’t about incremental results or patiently working to change the mainstream.

Why go for Rand Paul when there’s always… um. Well, there’s always Newt Gringrich and Rick Santorum. Or, um… maybe Rob Portman or…um, George Allen. Or, um… is it Lindsey Graham’s turn for the nomination?

So let’s take a tally here of which Republican politicians have p-ssed away any shot at the 2016 nomination in the last 2 weeks:
Chris CRISTie
Bobby Jindal
Rand Paul
Who’s next?

I should clarify that while I don’t think his father’s fans will vote for him, I certainly will.
The only drawback to the Paul philosophy at this point is to our allies abroad who depend on us, and unfortunately that’s not a luxury we can afford. A basket case can’t help others. We might not be able to protect ourselves from Iran and China, much less Israel and Taiwan.
The shame of it doesn’t change the reality.

This won’t win any libs/moderates or hispanics with Amnesty. Especially not coming from Rand Paul.
Whats needed is an articulate AND charismatic figure, preferably hispanic and Catholic

He’s the only one pushing “right to work.” He’s the only one who made a phone presentation for Akin here in Missouri. he or his staff consistently answer queries even from those who aren’t his constituents. I like the guy.
Besides, he sent me a “Don’t Tread on Me” bumper sticker.

Hmmmmmmmm… What vanguard conservative voice has been smart enough not to prematurely jump on the big idea bandwagon… I know it’ll come to me sometime…

I’m as a big a hawk as anyone but maybe some withdrawal of aid to some would be beneficial. A lot of our “friends” have gotten away with way too much because they know we won’t do anything.

Before the election, I liked the younger Paul…after the election, and the Paulbots who didnt vote, or voted for Johnson–I will NEVER give my vote to anyone who is associated with that movement. Ron Paul was only in it to advance his son…I depise that man…and therefore–his son.

I’m ready to go full libertarian.
I’ve had my fill of
northeastern moderatesRINOs. I’d enjoy seeing the media’s head explode when they are confronted with a politician who really does want to cut the federal government, rather than just the rate of its inexorable growth.Nessuno on November 13, 2012 at 8:06 PM
I like Rand, but the amnesty BS is a dead end, guys. I’m starting to wonder if this is all just lip service to plant the seed we’re the open borders party again and then do nothing with regard to another amnesty.
Punchenko on November 13, 2012 at 8:06 PM
Is he sticking his nose in the states’ business? If it’s federal, isn’t that smuggling and large quantities?
Buddahpundit on November 13, 2012 at 8:08 PM
Rand will never get elected President, for alot of reasons. To actually help fight Statism he should stay in the Senate and fight the budget and reduce regulations and taxes.
If he runs for President, its all about him and his ego and Bank Account. Just like his dad.
2016 is also the year he’s up for re-election. Adopting Amnesty and going against defense will hurt him to that end(Re-Election) and the opposite of what he actually ran on in 2010. So he’s probably not helping at all and going to run for POTUS.
Rubio is the best, most dynamic young option we have. Paul will join the MSM in destroying him over the next few years. We need a quick and painless Primary in 2016 and produce a candidate that can win.
jp on November 13, 2012 at 8:10 PM
All I can say is Rand Paul can go eff himself. DeMint, one of the staunches opponents of amnesty and apparently one of the few decent ones left (Jeff Sessions is always in that list) helped get that traitor elected and he does this. Fine, give the lawbreakers amnesty when we have 23 million out of work. Let em all get on Obamacare. Let ‘em bring their 10 million relatives with them and let them all vote Democratic. If the GOP has a death wish, then go for it. Levin went through the whole hispanic vote by election since 1980 the other night and there was never an increase after each one (there have been 7). The only that happens is that they vote Democratic and we get to pay for them.
TxAnn56 on November 13, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Even though I disagree with his stance on immigration I would gladly support a small government libertarian conservative over the rest of RINO’s.
Couple his ability to articulate liberty with the 10th amendment and I am sold.
Meat Fighter on November 13, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Why not just wait to hear what Rand proposes before reacting? I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until I read it.

How does he feel about us Amish?
Bishop on November 13, 2012 at 8:15 PM
Rand was always for Amnesty, probably an extreme version of it.
Its hard to know exactly how far to the left he is and with his dad in his Libertarianism(Anarcho-Capitalism based). He is though, just much much much better masked than his father.
Full blown Amnesty is the logical position to their brand of Libertarianism. A strong stance to them is “Statist” interventionism into the “Free Market”, which is all this is. The market demanding low wage workers, and those workers crossing the border to meet that demand.
jp on November 13, 2012 at 8:16 PM
Amnesty for all, open the borders, you step one toe on U.S. territory and you get full citizenship, unionize every one of them, and just for the hell of it repeal the requirements for being President so all former illegals can live the dream too.

The main problem with that position of open border and free flowing labor, of course, is that we have a massive welfare state that can’t absorb an unending flow of unskilled, uneducated workers (and their extended families). The Libertarian ” labor market,” as far as immigration is concerned, doesn’t exist in a vacuum, unfortunately.
visions on November 13, 2012 at 8:34 PM
They can be Villagrosas then and rule the liberals.
And while they’re at it, why not hock one big collective lugie (sp?) at those who waited years to do it the right way and worked while they waited. (And didn’t kill thousands while driving drunk)
TxAnn56 on November 13, 2012 at 8:35 PM
Neither does our immigration policy. It is constrained by domestic politics and international realities.
Face it… when you have one of the richest nations on Earth sharing a 2000 mile border with an incredibly poor, corrupt, crime-ridden nation, people are going to risk life and limb to cross that border. And right now, the immigration hard-liners, for all their talk of law and order, are making the GOP look like a xenophobic party.
We’re not going to round up 20 million people and move them back to Mexico. That’s a hard and fast political reality. So we had better come up with some sort of plan to deal with the problem besides beating our chest and screaming “Build a fence!”

Ayeah, that and Bishop’s “plan”, which amounts to “hope that politicians change and start enforcing the rules out of the blue” are simply not going to happen. An America that re-elected One Big Awful Mistake Again is not going to play “Wetback Roundup” to the tune of several million verses.
