How young voters won the culture wars
Conservatives were fearful that the minds of America’s youth (that is, those born in 1980 and after) would be infiltrated by secular, liberal ideology. At the fundamental level of political allegiance, they were right: the great majority of those born in 1980 or after are strongly Democratic-leaning.
The president’s anchor among age groups in both 2008 and 2012 was young voters. He won 66% of the votes of 18-24 and 25-29 year-olds in 2008. That percentage shrunk, as he lost support nationwide, to 60% among 25-29 year-olds in 2012 – though this was still more than among any other age group. Importantly, for the long-term Democratic coalition, there was no sign in the exit polls that the Democratic appeal for young voters was abating among those who turned 18 over the past four years: those 18-24 year-old were just as likely to support the president as the 25-29 year-olds.
And those who turned 30 over the past four years have maintained their Democratic allegiance from 2008. The conventional wisdom is that people become more conservative as they age. This isn’t borne out in the research, and 2012 is no exception. The only age group whose vote increased for Obama from 2008 to 2012 was 30-39 year-olds, as those who had formerly been 25-29 years old moved into 30-39 year-old age cohort.

They do not win any way it goes then. Winning the culture war their way gives a certainty of a harder more fruitless life. Good luck with that.

It’s all about using the perceived authority of the government to declare them morally superior to those who disprove of their immoral impulses.

Yeah right, that young people are usually leftwingers is a phenomenon that didnt occur before the 80ies. The 60ies and 70ies were milestones for the conservative movement concerning the recruitment of young people!

Let’s talk about the youth vote… Mitt Romney wont white voters under 30 by 7 points after Obama beat McCain by 10 points in that demographic.
This statistic is an absolute bombshell but NOBODY is talking about it.
There is no “youth” vote… a person’s identity as a “youth” only really makes since in mono-racial societies…
Right now there is an ethnic vote for which there are lots of youths and there is a white youth vote which is swingy but is starting to show signs of being racialized.

These people are a minority in their real demographic. Their real pears(other whites) voted with Romney.

wont = won
pears = peers

Years of kids raised by “Friends” and “Sex and the City” instead of by their parents are paying off to a degree for the liberals.

Yep. Well, not necessarily mono-racial societies. But certainly the USA is distinguished by the 40/80 rule. Democrats just have to keep their share of minorities above 80% and their share of whites above 40%, both do-able.
The story of “Democratic youth replacing old Republicans” is really a story of racial minorities replacing whites, and voting as they’ve been taught for the ward heeler.

It’s not culture. There are 2 popular meanings to the word.
Thw “culture war”..is nothing more than pop-entertainment = “culture”.
Actual culture means long established values and traditions of a society and country.

Wouldn’t it be something if the higher education bubble popped, and a lot of these youth end up out of the reach of their college professors—busy learning HVAC, auto repair, plumbing, etc. where they often end up richer than their college peers?

We send our kids to government-run schools to be taught the religion of the state by government workers who belong to socialist unions.
Why are we surprised when they turn out to be leftys? It seems like that was the plan from way back.

That is perhaps the most interesting (and troubling) result of the 2012 election, IMO, is how white Americans are consolidating around one party.
Punchenko on November 13, 2012 at 7:58 PM
This is a load of malarkey. Voter turnout among 30-44 yer old was down 2 percentage points and, as someone has already pointed out, Obama lost the white youth vote. If we are to take this election results as an indicator of trends then the most obvious trend is that white voters are moving away from the Democratic Party more than ever.

Shouldn’t it read: How the Teachers’ Unions won the culture wars?

If anyone ever asks America what it would give for eight hours a day of “free” babysitting we can honestly respond “The hearts and minds of our children.”

Too bad they were more interested in these social issues, things which don’t REALLY require the federal government, instead of interested in the GDP or taxes or finances.
Not worried about money eh? I think they were voting on Image and identity, if I am cool enough if I vote for the cool presidential candidate, not the one they keep telling them lives in the 1950′s and wants to keep women in the kitchen.
Totally goofy.

It’s inevitable that this happens… just look at city elections… especially New York and Chicago.
