“We are bombarded with liberal media all day long — yet to seek out alternatives means we are in a cocoon?”
We read NY Times stories every day, except we often don’t realize it because they are reprints in local newspapers. We read Politico all day long, except we don’t realize it because it appears under a Yahoo or other news banner. We have no choice but to listen to CBS and other mainstream media, because our local news stations use their news feeds. We live in a world of a social agenda entertainment industry.
And yes, we watch MSNBC, just look at the Twitter feeds of conservatives and you will understand that we hang on almost every Chris Matthews rant.
The notion of a cocoon unique to conservatives is nonsense, and without any evidence.
What about all the liberals who refuse to watch Fox News, and Media Matters which is organized for the very purpose of destroying Fox News. For every example of a conservative cocoon I could give you 10 examples of liberal cocoons.

The same idiots would be telling us to convert to Islam if we lived in Europe, because Christianity is less popular now.
SirGawain on November 12, 2012 at 3:38 PM
lo, of course there is a cocoon, it was proven during this election when many repubs just ignored any bad news if it came from the msm. if I posted any diferent news in this site, i would be trollcoted or something.

Thank you for promoting Prof. Jacobsen’s work.
alwaysfiredup on November 12, 2012 at 3:39 PM
It would be much easier to recommend articles on Jacobson’s website, if the name of his web site weren’t so ridiculous and otherwise embarrassing.
Marsili.us on November 12, 2012 at 3:39 PM
No, that doesn’t put you in a “cocoon”. But when you have a story,”Bellwethers in Ohio and N.H. point to Romney win”
and no poll since 10/31 showed Romney with a lead in OH- (and, that was a single poll), or when you pretend that every Academy of Science, and climatologist are conspiring against you, you are in a cocoon. A cocoon full of idiocy and losing.
Enjoy your stay.
inklake on November 12, 2012 at 3:40 PM
So you claim to like empirical data, but when a study shows that there is no such thing as an ideological cocoon for politically minded web surfers (man that term feels so outdated now, btw), you cover your ears and say “lalala I can’t hear you”?

Hot Air does because we can take it. We are not a cocoon, they are.

When I read the Politico article, I disagreed completely. I’m glad LI pointed out the problems.
I think they evidence discussed at the end of the LI article, regarding how both conservatives and liberals actually do visit sites of the opposing view more often than the average internet surfer, presents the most obvious counter-argument to the Politico article. It seems to me that people who visit NYT or Fox News or even Politico are like many of us on this site… they are just news/politics junkies… they want to read every bit of information and commentary on the new cycle regardless of it’s origins. In fact, I would say many people here on this site, despite our overwhelming conservative or libertarian bents, often go visit the liberal sites just to see the counter-arguments to our views. I know for me personally, I want to know what logic (if any) exists behind the liberal viewpoint so that I have as much info as possible in my arsenal from which to debate.
gravityman on November 12, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Even if you got all your news from a place like Hot Gas, you still couldn’t remain in a cocoon. This site links to the likes of The Daily Show, MSDNC, CNN, the alphabet networks, the NY Slimes, WaPo, Politico, and HuffPo. Does it’s not like these links are provided for the sole purpose of mocking the news outlets or treating them with skepticism. Sometimes they’re simply the source for a story and nothing more.
This is a BS narrative being pushed by Politico. Just the same tired old crap we hear from the decaying legacy media that if we don’t get our news from them, we’re getting a bunch of lies and propaganda.

Starve the looters.
They include the ones on the right.
Quit listening to Hannity and such lightweight cheerleaders.
If cheerleaders had brains they woulnd’t be….cheerleaders.
The R/C side needs leaders with convictions, principles and a set of steeely ones, alas.
Schadenfreude on November 12, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Good elaboration of thebrokenrattle’s point.
All points (to the anger of some who wish to remain cocooned) to the fact that HotAir is the example of a diverse political clearinghouse.
davidk on November 12, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Two big reasons that liberty has been in retreat for so long:
The Government indoctrination centers (schools).
The corrupt Bull Stream Media [BSM].
Until we compete in these two realms Liberty and Conservatism will be forever on defense.
It is time for Fox News to have some Liberty minded competition.
Chip on November 12, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Conservative cocoon? Nah.
Giant liberal tapeworm gnawing at the guts of the nation? Indeed.
Akzed on November 12, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Well, you can live in a cocoon and still visit liberal sources of information. The fact that you read the NY Times or watch MSNBC doesn’t by itself mean that you’re not cocooning.
There was a belief by some here – too many I think – that the polls showing Obama ahead were fixed or irrelevant because they all had a heavy pro Democratic sampling. To be sure, some of those polls were garbage but to have so many polls for 3-4 months showing Romney behind couldn’t be dismissed. But they were.
But the cocooning is occuring across the spectrum. I don’t see where the right is more guilty of this today than the left. In fact, the evidence shows that they’re less guilty.
But less guilt doesn’t mean innocence.

Schadenfreude says this, apparently without irony:
Here’s the punch-line:
inklake on November 12, 2012 at 3:55 PM
If you listen to talk radio you will invariably hear the top of the hour news updates that has a leftist slant – and that includes those from Fox news.
You’re right – Conservative Liberty minded folks can’t escape from the left’s BS barrage no matter what we do.
The left however – they can marinate in their oppressive world view all day long if they want.
Chip on November 12, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Just as Rush was saying today, they want to get rid of him, he speaks for all of you know in their mind, and Fox news. But the conservative blogs give us our other great news we can’t get otherwise?
I should add, Drudge does a great job also and does Beck.

Liberals are always at war with us.
“Insular” and “cocoon” are the memes of the day. Have seen these odd words used many, many times today.
Mock them. Repeat.

Thats funny.
You do realize that 10 million fewer people voted for Obama, and many more sat the election out because…wait for it…the candidate was not conservative enough, don’t you?
To recap:
Obama sucks and 10 million people agree.
The cry is for a more conservative candidate.
Obama won by 400K. He’s losing ground along with the effete progressive left.
Thats whats coming for you girls in 2016.

Don’cha know – if we’d all just listen to the boys & gals at NBC & turn to DU and Puff HO for our reading pleasure we’d be just as well informed as the average Obama voter. Sort of ballsy for people who see Bill Maher as a credible source to criticize other people’s info choices.

You’d think the way GOPers are beating themselves up and the way the left is crowing that we lost 50-30 rather than 50-48.

Not every idiot is a liberal, but ALL liberals are idiots and this just is further proof of it.
