“Mr. Petraeus had shared some access to the account with Ms. Broadwell, possibly to exchange messages”
The FBI and prosecutors in Florida and North Carolina began investigating the possibility of email hacking, because at least some of the emails sent by Ms. Broadwell to the other woman included contents of messages that appeared to come from Mr. Petraeus’s own account, these people said. The Justice Department and high-level officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, were aware of the investigation for months, having to approve certain parts of the investigation.
Over the course of the probe, prosecutors realized there wasn’t a cyber-breach. Instead, Mr. Petraeus had shared some access to the account with Ms. Broadwell, possibly to exchange messages, these people said…
The investigation began this spring, and FBI agents interviewed Mr. Petraeus in the past two weeks. During that interview, Mr. Petraeus admitted the affair with Ms. Broadwell, who is also married, according to another person familiar with the case.

Obama knew nothing…

This makes no sense. Share the same email account so they can share messages?
Blake on November 11, 2012 at 4:54 PM
It does make sense. Send messages to each other from the same email. No trace of it going from point A to point B, just from point A to point A. I send messages to my husband from his own email sometimes if mine is acting up.

Sir, a final salute before you stand down.

Mitsouko probably is closer to what happened than what I’ll suggest, but I know my own brother and his bride-to-be share a single account. Arguably the reason given is that they have no secrets, but in Petreaus’ account it’s probably because they shared one big secret.
eforhan on November 11, 2012 at 5:04 PM
I think there’s already been more stories about this than Benghazi.
WisCon on November 11, 2012 at 5:04 PM
That is a quick and easy way to have reasonably secure communication. Often times messages aren’t sent, but simply saved as drafts. That way nothing is archived, but since this case involved forwards it’s likely they were sending (even if only to themselves).
Still, the director of the CIA should know better. A lot better.

It’s not about the sex.
When you have affairs like this at this high level it eventually winds up having nothing to do with the sex. It’s all the baggage that comes with the affair. Most human beings, especially women, can’t compartmentalize the sex from the rest of their lives.
As the saying goes, men pay prostitutes not for the sex but for them to go away after the sex.

Stay away from my guy?? Frightening???
Blake on November 11, 2012 at 5:20 PM
Riiiigggghhht. Holder knew but Obama didn’t. I swear, old Barry has the maturity of a ten year old: “Uh, oh, this looks bad for me, I better make up a story, any story. I’ll just lie- they can’t prove I’m lying.”
BettyRuth on November 11, 2012 at 5:21 PM
She broke it off in 9/11 but he pursued her with thousands of emails but she threatened other women? I’m confused!

Bounce ideas off him while he bounces quarters off her a$$?
Blake on November 11, 2012 at 5:25 PM
All this for sex? Seriously it’s not worth it. Being married 30 years, each year had it’s challenges but I cannot imagine putting my carreer and family on the line for this. I have grown so dependent on my wife that I panic when she is not around.
My heart goes out to the Petraeus and his family, for some reason I want this story to go away because it distracts from Benghazi.
celticdefender on November 11, 2012 at 5:35 PM
Duh, that’s the point of all of this. Sex sells, dead ambassador’s not so much.
JPeterman on November 11, 2012 at 5:47 PM
Well, this tells me that because all this was going on, Petraues wasn’t doing his job with Benghazi.
Blake on November 11, 2012 at 5:55 PM
It’s pretty “tin foil” to conclude that Obama conspired to make all this happen.
However, stipulating you are correct just for a mental exercise and Obama DID coordinate all this … it wouldn’t have been the least bit successful if you guys hadn’t set up a system of morality whereby you insist that your political leaders be as clean and white as the driven snow.
It’s not a big deal to me that he had an affair. News flash – some of the founding fathers had affairs. I personally know good men who died for your freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan who did all manner of things from affairs – to visiting prostitutes.
But you guys want to stick your heads in the sand and insist on perfect morality.
Fine – but then again – this is the kind of spectacle you get.

Remember she has a husband and little kids also.
terryannonline on November 11, 2012 at 6:20 PM
And once again, your idiocy is on full display for all to see as you take my comment and blow it into what it was not.
The “press” is hot on the trail of this so called scandal and are looking under every rock to find more dirt unlike the way they have ignored looking under the rocks with regards to Benghazi.
Sober up.
JPeterman on November 11, 2012 at 6:26 PM
Oh okay – so this means you’re off the “Obama Conspiracy Train” here?
Good man.
Yes – the press will bend hell to get Benghazi off the air. Not much news in that.
HondaV65 on November 11, 2012 at 6:33 PM
dude…the elections are over. it’s ok to wake up now.
I just want Patreus to testify on Bengazhi…before he’s ‘eliminated’. By that I mean, you’ve watch the movies too, so you know you would not be sleeping if you were him right now..

Isn’t adultery still a crime under the UCMJ:

56andwarmweather on November 11, 2012 at 6:41 PM
Do you know how much energy this would take? How distracted they would be? Seriously, I know people who have done this and it CONSUMES them. It eats you alive. It is all they think about. If you are in on the secret, it is ALL THEY TALK ABOUT. All they want to do is have sex with this person. It close to being insane. Two people in my family have destroyed their families over stuff like this. And while it seemed so exciting compared to my steady, solid marriage at the time, they both now look at me and my husband and weep for what they have lost, all the while rationalizing it was for the best. It is completely within the realm of possibility that Petraeus was consumed with this. He has hours invested in emails. It makes me sick and with the election this week, I have no faith in this government to keep us safe.
djl130 on November 11, 2012 at 6:45 PM
I am not advocating throwing General Petraeus into prison for the crime of adultery. But I do think that today’s permissive, “anything-goes”, morally lax, culture is overlooking how society has moved the Goal Posts of Integrity and Honesty and Character farther than we think we have….
56andwarmweather on November 11, 2012 at 6:49 PM
Eric Holder: “General Petraeus? I pore over the reports on his investigation. Fast & Furious? What Fast & Furious? Oh, that program for which someone told me I need executive privilege? I know nothing.”
BuckeyeSam on November 11, 2012 at 6:56 PM
I think most of the political issues we discuss here everyday won’t be solved until we change our society and culture. Our culture is on a steep decline. It’s very sad.

The Obama admin is floating different stories to see which ones focus-group best
faraway on November 11, 2012 at 7:02 PM
That assumes that Petraeus’s spokesman can be trusted. Since it would be a violation of the UCMJ he may have a motive for not being entirely truthful.

Affairs, prostitutes and mistresses are as old as the hills. Pretreaus broke his vow with his wife and that is for them to work out. Our focus needs to be on Benghazi. That said, being DCIA, he should have had enough sense to stay away from Gmail and any other “free” email, except as a throwaway to be used for a specific purpose. You’d think that was the case here except it seems others also corresponded with him via this account. Word to the wise, if you want relatively better security/privacy, get your own domain–well worth the cheap cost.
