Boehner to House GOP: It’s time to fall in line
Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.
Members on the call, subdued and dark, murmured words of support — even a few who had been a thorn in the speaker’s side for much of this Congress.
It was a striking contrast to a similar call last year, when Mr. Boehner tried to persuade members to compromise with Democrats on a deal to extend a temporary cut in payroll taxes, only to have them loudly revolt.
With President Obama re-elected and Democrats cementing control of the Senate, Mr. Boehner will need to capitalize on the chastened faction of the House G.O.P. that wants to cut a deal to avert sudden tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts in January that could send the economy back into recession.

Until liberals get everything they want they won’t understand what real “liberalism” is. Give it to them.

No it didn’t. The country is divided almost equally. Obama won by a far less margin than he did the first time. It’s not the GOP or it’s message. It’s a batshit crazy and racist-voting electorate that’s the problem.

“It’s time to fall in line.”
Yes, the GOP fell in line behind Romney and lost. But I guess people like Boehner are committed to making people fall in line rather than doing what we’ve been hoping they’d start doing once we helped to get them elected.
Aitch748 on November 11, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Not in the House, you dolt. When we won in the congressional election of 2002, did the left fall in line? Nope they raised the use of the filibuster to the levels we see being played out now that everyone seems to hate only when republicans are doing it. When they lost in 2004 with Kerry, did the Left fall in line and help Bush reform S.S.? Nope. They stood beneath a statue of a crippled old fart, FDR, and declared that they’d never work with President Bush to reform S.S. And now we’re facing financial collapse when we could’ve done something 12 years ago. When we won in 2010, and destroyed democrats, did the Left fall in line? Nope they became more radical. Obama pushed budgets that were so radical, they didn’t receive a single vote by any member in either chamber. Reid’s radicalism went so far as to break the law by failing to produce a budget out of the Senate for over two years. And Obama radicalized the Presidency by putting out EO’s saying it will no longer enforce DOMA and granting Amnesty to thousands of Mexicans as an election ploy. We don’t need to fall in line, push and push harder. Paint Obama as the radical he is.

Vote present on everything, and make a very public statement that although the GOP disagrees, the people have spoken for higher taxes and more entitlements and so the GOP will stand aside.
The rats want the GOP to blame, don’t give it to them. Then sit back and watch as the rats run around in circles trying to explain how they can’t pass their own bills because the GOP is allowing them through.
Bishop on November 11, 2012 at 12:02 PM
The members of the house are there to represent their constituents not the party…
The reason so many people stayed home rather than vote in this election is that they see no difference between the Dems and the Reps.
I hope those members that were vaulted into power by the Tea Party movement don’t just back down and fall in line.

The “Fix” is in, everyone. This was the plan from the beginning.
Obamacare WAS a Republican Idea. The Republicans simply realized that it was Unconstitutional so they let the Democrats do it. But make no mistake, the Republican establishment WANTS that law. That is why John Roberts suddenly forgot his oath of office and judicial precedent and allowed it through thinking SO convoluted it can’t be rationally explained. The Republicans are not necessarily “Conservative” and this will allow them to silence that element of the party, one that they were never comfortable with.
What you are seeing now is the Republican Establishment saying – Oh Well, we might as well get with the picture. Acting like they are reluctant, on principle, but that this is the right thing to do, when in fact, its what they have wanted to do from the beginning.
What Boehner is too shortsignted to see is that Repunlicans will never win elections being Democrat Light. Mitt, McCain, Dole, Bush1 – were all Democrat Light and were shown the door for the same reason. The rise of the welfare state guarantees that conservatism dies as going forward as the two parties will both be Liberal, fighting over who can run the welfare state better.
Its time to go “Independent” everyone – then the Republican party will care what you think – as long as its not “Conservative”.

They should let ALL the Bush cuts expire. No deal…let’s go off that fiscal cliff and give the people what they voted for on Tuesday. It’s beyond asinine to cave on tax hikes for the “rich” while getting nothing in return…I really don’t get it. Either they go up for everyone, or they don’t go up at all.
changer1701 on November 11, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Time for a third party. The GOP has ignored two sets of election results in a row and would clearly rather “compromise” with the hard left than its own base.

Get this mofo out of the leadership of the party. He is a disgrace! You have control of the House. There isn’t anything Obama and the Dems can do without your support. Use your leverage and get some real reform in this country on entitlements and taxes. IF you can’t get it, go to the voters with confidence in 2014 and your base will keep you in the majority. By 2016, you might find yourself with both houses of Congress and the Presidency. Stand on freakin principle you azz!
milemarker2020 on November 11, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Possibly, but unfortunately, I don’t think they vote on a new Speaker until the new session, and this vote will be done before the end of the year.
Wethal on November 11, 2012 at 12:11 PM
This is the reason the GOP is ineffective. When Bush won in 2004, the Dems doubled down and fought like hell, blocking everything they possibly could…then won huge in 2006 and 2008. When the GOP gets beat, ‘leaders’ like Boehner just completely cave. Thus, we constantly move left, always ceding ground to the Dems until there is no ground left to stand on.

the problem is that the leftist urban elistists are far too powerful to let themselves get hurt…let mikey eat it (i.e. the middle class)
leftism is largely at this point about protecting the elites and their privileges..grim irony i know. but in any social utopia the higher ups in the apparatchik get the perks
a robust conservative would call these cheap leftist hacks (like schumer) out. they’ll protect their nyc people all day long (as long as he gets a cut)
here’s a BI article on the poor little leftists in the Blue States that would be sooooooooo hurt by the mean exemptions from state and local taxes…well, they’d have to pay more taxes…poor darlings.
urban elitists are just trying to postures and get mikey to eat it. they will continue to live their privileged lives of power and wealth…call them out John..if you can

Both caucuses will vote on membership races when the new freshman come into town in a few weeks, so while it technically isn’t until the new Congress that the Speaker is voted on, the Rs will decide in November.
I do think that the Rs are disheartened enough that they’ll just go with Boehner in 2012 however. Ryan has a huge following in the R caucus, especially among the newer members, so the election results are a huge gut punch for the Tea Party guys. However, count on Cantor making a serious challenge in 2014.
Illinidiva on November 11, 2012 at 12:25 PM
It never was about a GOP victory so much as saving America from a now inevitable decline. At least with the GOP she had a fighting chance. Not anymore. As so many have already pointed out, more than half of the current electorate has gone over the edge into fiscal and immoral insanity.

It’s certainly going to be even harder for the GOP faithful to “shame and blame” reluctant base voters into voting for questionable candidates in 2016 than it was in 2012.
Aitch748 on November 11, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Exactly. Let ALL the cuts expire. We need the revenue anyway. On the one hand O demonizes the Bush Tax Cuts, and so if that’s the way he feels, then let them expire.
anotherJoe on November 11, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Who is exactly is listening to you guys anymore?
For the love of goodness,
1) Kristol just said on Fox that it wouldn’t be the end of the world to increase taxes on the wealthy.
2) Boehner never wanted to be hardcore anyway, you think now he will?
3) who exactly do you suggest should takes Boehner down as maj leader?
4) and I thought the plan #forward was to let the Dems get anything they want..?
And with this article, I guess Obama was right about the breaking the GOP fever after reelection.
What will happen in the next 4yrs is what I would call “legitimate rape” of the GOP
Honestly, I feel like this blog’s commenters (same for huffpo’s) are in their own universe….fun read though
