Farewell to Britain’s warrior nation
It was obvious at the time that Margaret Thatcher’s South Atlantic adventure was a last imperial hurrah. But none of us would then have guessed that today, not merely the ships and planes, but the very Armed Forces which fought the war, would be on their way to the scrapyard. Soldiers are being made redundant. I do not mean merely those thousands of men and women who have lately been handed P45s as part of the Coalition Government’s defence cuts. Britain’s entire Armed Forces are shrinking towards a point where, like Alice’s cat, soon only the smile will be left.
This represents a big cultural change. Yet despite all the public’s enthusiasm for supporting soldiers through such charities as Help for Heroes, there is no sign that they have noticed the draconian implications of the defence cuts – or if they have, that they much care. Amid disillusionment following perceived military failure in Iraq and Afghanistan, the British people have lost enthusiasm for our traditional role as a warrior nation.
David Cameron’s Government is cutting the regular Army to its lowest manpower strength for centuries: 82,000. When the downsizing is complete, more than 20 per cent of our soldiers will have gone. I must confess that I am profoundly sceptical whether it will prove possible to recruit the 30,000 reservists the Defence Secretary promised this week.

I hope so… the more we fight abroad for “democracy” and “freedom” the more I feel like we’re losing it at home. The right needs to get over their military cultism.
ninjapirate on November 10, 2012 at 5:54 PM
Gosh does that not sound like what bho is doing to our nation? Get our military down to nothing? And too boot, GB seems to be knee deep in the rop type getter done in their country? Just like they want in the US? Not fun times we are in, but it is what is suppose to happen?

Cool! They can draft folks for the next dust up.
And thanks a lot, ninjapirate. Unemployed mil appreciate your concern.

BTW, I’m all for advocating for a “military ethic”… but nation states are not worth fighting for anymore… patriotism is stupidity because the nation state as a concept worth laying your life down for is stupid.
ninjapirate on November 10, 2012 at 5:58 PM
So, how did you celebrate Barry’s reelection?
ElectricPhase on November 10, 2012 at 5:59 PM
I don’t give a crap. People still willing to join the military anymore are f’n idiots. It’s the most PC organization out there and if you’re a white Christian male you are fighting for a beast that hates and wants to destroy you.

The Germans would be unstoppable now. Even worse, that George Washington fella is having weird thoughts about self-rule. And who the F is going to fight the Anglo-Mysore Wars?
Of course no one can answer these pressing military questions.
lester on November 10, 2012 at 6:00 PM
The beast is the nation-state itself… not the military it serves… but it’s one and the same really.
Too often conservatives get fixated on nonsense and can’t see the things they cherish(religious institutions, communities) are being destroyed… and often they use militarism as an outlet.
ninjapirate on November 10, 2012 at 6:02 PM
For the most part, I agree and I didn’t used to. Look at Iraq. “Liberating” a country for people who hate us. And to no particular strategic benefit. It’s idiotic. At first, I warily supported the Iraq war because Colin Powell and Bush had allegedly learned from Vietnam. They wound up practically recreating Vietnam.
The military lets our troops get murdered by our Afghani “allies” month after month for the sake of continuing the fiction that we’re building an advanced Western nation out of a population of primitive, tribal savages. I don’t trust our military’s senior commanders any more than I trust the rest of our government to look out for our soldiers. It’s time we stopped giving them some of our best people to kill in moronic, useless conflicts.

That has to be the single most clueless statement I’ve read on the internet since Al Gore invented it. Seriously.
Populous, resource poor…erm, nation states…are slavering and pawing the ground, waiting for this kind of weakness.

I’ll bet if you proposed reducing the budget of the NHS by even a shilling, they would sit up and take notice.
Thirty years from now:
I’ll bet if you proposed reducing the budget of the PPACA by even a dollar, they would sit up and take notice.
Odysseus on November 10, 2012 at 6:11 PM
Well, they’ve got it because America just voted for it. We’re dead broke and just voted to go broker. America’s no longer in a financial position to support being a superpower anymore and its citizens don’t care anyway. They just want free rubbers food stamps.
Django on November 10, 2012 at 6:12 PM
Yeah, I noticed.
We’re choomed.
ElectricPhase on November 10, 2012 at 6:15 PM
Yeah, I’m not happy about it but America’s changed in more ways than simply demographically. The “global steward” attitude of responsiblity from the old Cold War America has been replaced by people who think China’s going to care more about global warming than they do about kicking our asses.
Django on November 10, 2012 at 6:23 PM
That’s really what this is about. The NHS, even with its death panels, is growing ever more expensive. They’ll can every single servicemember before they start talking about cuts to the holy NHS.
The thing is people there are stupid enough to believe that with a handful of special forces, 6 ships, 1 sub, 20 planes, and some weekend warriors they can get by.
If I was Argentina I would simply walk right into the Falklands and plant the flag. There would be no repercussions and there’s a lot of oil to be had off the coast.

ALLAHALLAHALLAHALLAH!!!
RedNewEnglander on November 10, 2012 at 6:33 PM
Exactly. The 30,000 reservists are going to be homegrown suicide bombers from Leeds.
CorporatePiggy on November 10, 2012 at 6:36 PM
As our military weakens China will take whatever it wants in Asia and probably Africa. It is a resource hungry country and they don’t same hangups that we do. If it needs oil it will take it. The same for gold or other raw materials. It’ll be like the Japanese in the 1930s only this time we won’t have the ability to quickly raise an Army or create the planes, tanks and ships we need to keep them at bay.
I don’t like being in endless wars more than anyone else and I’d much rather be in a position like we were in the 80s where our foreign policy was more of deterrence by strength. I cannot see how shrinking our military will alleviate our current financial positon (since SS and Medicare are the real problems) and may actually make our situation worse by leaving us without resources and free trade.

Alberta_Patriot on November 10, 2012 at 7:07 PM
Worth listening to because he is dead serious and not alone. Whats more is that he is mixed in with people who want us unarmed. Useful idiots.
BullShooterAsInElk on November 10, 2012 at 7:43 PM
If you meant that as a general statement of fact, you’re absolutely correct.
If you meant that as an insinuation that ninjapirate is a liberal, you’re an imbecile.

This is why I keep trying to tell conservatives that we desperately need to fix our home front before we try to go off and “spread democracy” in God-knows-Whereistan.
We’re like a church sending a hundred missionaries off to Africa when the pastor is a disgrace, the elders are involved in scandal, and the worshipers are fighting like cats and dogs.
