“Whenever I went online, it really was like getting high on a drug”
Was Walker suffering from a true addiction to the Internet or just a bad habit? An emerging area of research has developed to study those who are obsessed with logging on to the World Wide Web. Scientists say brain scans of heavy Internet users reveal changes in both the size of certain parts of the brain as well as its function. They say it is possible to become addicted to the Internet.
“The new research, whether it’s imaging research or genetic research or other kinds of research, [is] pointing to a biological disposition, something in our biology that makes it easy for us to fall in love with a video game or with the Internet. And for a proportion of us, this love affair can start looking like an addiction,” said Dr. Elias Aboujaoude, who runs Stanford University’s Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Clinic and Impulse Control Disorders Clinic and recently completed one of the largest studies to examine how common problematic Internet use is in the United States.

Fairly sure I have whatever this is.

Uhh, the article says he was addicted to “World of Warcraft” not the internet as a whole.
You can’t be addicted to “the internet” any more than you can be addicted to phones or tv.
yeah, so if someone is unhappy with their life and they choose escapism (which doesn’t have to be through a video game) instead of working on fixing their problems, of course things won’t improve.
people with addictive personalities will always orient their compulsion towards something. you can’t compare their conscious choices to the lack of choice that people have when they are addicted to narcotics.

I’m getting dangerously close to this.
Drudge’s auto-refresh is my enabler.

This article makes me sad. It reminds me that the game I’ve beenplaying for 8 years is shutting down at the end of this month and I really should log on over there so I can keep trying to get the Badge for getting 1250 Badges (only 32 more to go) before it goes away forever.
And I also need to find another MMO to get into, I guess. Most of them seem to be concentrated on the end game, though, and I don’t care for that… I tend to like the mid game more.
But I’m not addicted… I can quit any time I like.

This is what they said in the 80s about D&D.
What happened to those “users?”

Heh.

HA is like that for me. Typing this makes me so happy but I know that soon I’ll have to Submit Comment and then it’s back to the cold, sad, real world.

Personally, I gave up on it when 4th edition came out and it seemed to me to be too much like an MMOG, as far as actual game play went.
Damn, I’m a nerd. Now if you’ll excuse me, Big Bang Theory starts in a little while…

The influence of liberalism is clear here. An entire ideology dedicated to avoiding personal responsibility in all aspects of life.
“Not my fault I’m a lazy slob living in mom’s basement eating Cheetos sandwiches. I’m addicted to the inter webs”
This is completely different. Ed uses subliminal messaging to give you that thrill. Try Firefox … it’ll block all that nasty psyops stuff … and the auto play ads too.

If I can link this to global warming, I could be making millions in grant money.

Gamers are notorious for bad diet.
Internet gaming addiction = increased flatulence.
Flatulence = emission of greenhouse gases
Therefore, internet gaming addiction adds to global warming!
I expect a cut of the grant money. Not much, how’s 5% sound?

Allah, do you have a confession you would like to make?

My “I may have a problem” moment came when I built an Nvidia surround setup with a GTX 690. And if you knew what that was, you have a problem too.

It’s so crazy, it just might work. Done.

If that’s not quite enough, you can point out that gamers drink sodas that are larger than 16 ounces (I’ll kill a 2-liter bottle in one sitting and sometimes go to the fridge for more). And quite often eat salty snacks.
At the very least, you can get NYC to ban the internet based on that.
Uh oh. I sense the banstick coming from allahpundit after that last remark…
malclave on November 9, 2012 at 12:30 AM
Yeah, I drink way too much soda myself. But the $.99 Store down the street sells 2-liter bottles (unrefrigerated). I’m only human after all.

It’s a mad house!
No doubt we need an early education program, followed up by a mid and later education program. Of course insurance companies should pay for internet addiction rehab. Of course! It only makes sense!

A “drug”?
Then you need internet condoms!

I am trying to quit, yet here I am. I guess that means I am addicted. C’est la vie.
