Pols: Texas is the model for attracting Latinos to the GOP
“Texas is a way forward to show that you can be very conservative and talk about the issues that Hispanic small business people and people who want their kids to get a good education embrace,” said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) on CNN’s “Starting Point.” “I get a very large percent of Hispanic votes, as did George W. Bush. It’s doable for sure at a national level if we kind of follow the Texas model.”…
“We are a Republican state, definitely a red state, and we do have an outreach to Latinos,” she said. “Our next senator from Texas [Ted Cruz] is going to be a Latino Republican. The reason is, we are talking about the issues and including them in our leadership.”

Fair enough. I’ve seen some data posted, both at NRO and Ace that Latinos are not single issue voters on immigration, rather big government ecomonics are a bigger issue. They are even liberal on gay marriage. I’m not sure a different stance would have made that big a difference. Obama could always outbid us on these things.

What differences are those?

Texas has Hispanic families whose great-great-great grand abuelos wore playing cards in their hats at the Battle of San Jacinto fighting under Juan Seguin and Sam Houston (Psssst… Santa Anna was a frelling tyrant, who cheesed off Texans of all colors. Tejanos fought for their freedom, too).

This brings up another issue with the Hispanic vote. I hadn’t heard that Hispanics support gay marriage in large numbers but now that I think about it….I’m not all that surprised. The Hispanic population is mostly young. Young people favor gay marriage in large numbers.

They also have high rate of out of wedlock births. Not a recipe for voting GOP. Or for success.

So many differences. Like I said when I lived moved Virginia Beach for two years I went into culture shock. I don’t know how to explain it….it’s just different.

Right but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to get more Hispanic votes. Like I said most of the Hispanic population is young…….Lord knows that young people change their minds.
