Bad news: Obama just wasn’t into this campaign
The key to understanding the Obama enigma of 2012, according to more than a dozen Obama associates interviewed by POLITICO during the campaign, is that the president enthusiastically approved the message of relentless attacks against Mitt Romney. But until the last week of the campaign — when optimism made a major comeback — Obama executed it mirthlessly and mechanically, at times reinforcing the “meh” vibe of his supportive but uninspired base…
“I get why he had to do what he did. It was smart politically. But he’s become the embodiment of the partisanship he once decried,” said The New York Times’s David Brooks, one of the few journalists to strike up a real relationship with Obama during his first term. “The dissonance [between Obama in 2008 and 2012] is so obvious. … Can you think of a president who ran more different campaigns the first and second times? I’ve tried. I can’t.”…
“[Obama] found his voice in 2008. That voice has, for the most part, been missing in 2012,” said CNN contributor David Gergen, who counseled presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
“This isn’t the kind of politics this man likes to practice. … Another factor is that he’s a moody person. Bill Clinton, for instance, was a much sunnier person. He let things roll off him more easily. You could see that during [Clinton’s] reelection campaign. … The clothes of this campaign, the negativity, don’t really fit” Obama.

Aww, poor dear. It’s ok. You don’t have to play president anymore after Tuesday.

We are going to hear “unnamed sources” blaming eachother for the Obama loss.

The recriminations are starting early in RINO land.

It’s not that he’s not up to the job. It’s that the job is simply not up to him. A man of Obama’s obviously galaxy-dominating intellect simply needs a bigger challenge.
I think I just threw up a little.

Up and down? Can someone tell me where the up was. His whole campaign sucked if you ask me.
smoothsailing on November 5, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Well you could have fooled me about bho not being into the campaign? bho has been campaigning since he was elected and on AF1 almost daily doing it since! It would be something if we could somehow get the air miles AF1 has put on the plane hauling bho around the US campaigning on our dime!

He did so well in 2008 because it was easy.
Obama doesn’t do “hard.”
Obama does easy.

Maybe to a pilot or to a mechanic, but to those of us who are frequent fliers, it’s all about the miles.

Maybe Politico should wait to see if Obama actually loses tomorrow before trying to find a reason for the loss?

Re: David Brooks
He still hasn’t tumbled that the center right Obama he imagined never existed. The guy in this campaign, that’s Obama.
Curmudgeon on November 5, 2012 at 1:33 PM
BS. The petty, vindictive, negative person we’re seeing now is the real Obama. He didn’t have to do that in ’08 because he was running on the strength of Bush hatred and the historical nature of his candidacy.
changer1701 on November 5, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Fine. Hopefully, America just isn’t that much into him, either, any more.

Schadenfreude on November 5, 2012 at 1:35 PM
The article says the reason Obama just wasn’t into it was because he couldn’t get his heart into the slash and burn campaign he knew he would have wage against Mitt Romney – as if he’s just to decent a man for that. What a barfer.
tommyboy on November 5, 2012 at 1:37 PM
I need a new heart. The original one won’t be able to handle all the Schadenfreude.
I always knew that the Messiah never was. It’s great to see that most of America opened her eyes, eventually.
If not, all can go to Hades, with Obama up front. It will be utterly deserved, full destruction.

Looks like the excuses are starting early.
Doomberg on November 5, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I don’t think they’re saying he will lose, they are saying he wasn’t “into” the campaign.
If American citizens want a European-style “managed decline” welfare/nanny state with a permanent, massive underclass ruled by elites then that’s what they will vote for. Obama could play golf the whole campaign.

brooks obviously sees himself as a theater critic…and that’s pretty much what he is. The characters acting on the stage of history. viewed of course with a sense of psycho-babble…about the inner workings of the men, large and small, that make history
ans so the best story in their world view is the rise and fall of great men
of course it is rubbish. It is very simple, sometimes left-wingers seize control of all the levers of Power..and they usually fail Epically. Socialism and pointy headed nostrum of the public intellectual class are usually wrong…and hopefully the country can take back the power from the nuts

Dog gone it – those wicked Republicans insist on fighting back this time! Lordy! I bet he misses John McCain!

Wrong. Even before the campaign began in earnest, B. Hussein was sending signals that he really didn’t want to do this Prezidentin’ thang anymore. He’s been talking to Bubba who’s been getting him excited about that big home in Hawaii, and making the talk shows and playing all the golf he could ever want.
I’m sorry, but 0bama was never into this campaign. A lot of other people were and have been pushing him to do it, but, yes heart hasn’t been in it. The job is just too hard and the lifetime perks are so close…

Norwegian on November 5, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Obama wears his crown upon a troubled brow. Just what is he into, if not his re-election? It sure as hell isn’t making the country run smoothly. He seems to be happiest holding parties and rubbing elbows with Hollywood stars and tyrannical leaders of foreign countries. As soon as the crowds stop cheering he’s just bored with the whole leader-of-the-free-world thing.
Socratease on November 5, 2012 at 1:46 PM
How fast everyone seems to have forgotten the positive campaign waged against Sarah Palin.
BobMbx on November 5, 2012 at 1:48 PM
God I hope he doesn’t abdicate from Nov 7 to January 19. 2 months is a lot of time for the world/country to deteriorate. But I hear he conned a rich lady into buying him a palace in Hawaii, so it’s good to know he’ll land on his feet. One less thing to worry about.
alwaysfiredup on November 5, 2012 at 1:48 PM
He’s just bummed that he doesn’t have it as easy as his buddy Hugo Chavez.
Ward Cleaver on November 5, 2012 at 1:48 PM
So Brooks sees a political strategy that completely backfired and then says it “was smart politically?”
Ok.
joey24007 on November 5, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Why do these pundits stare unblinkingly out the window when they’ve got the answers to the questions scrawled right on the effing blackboard.
The key to understanding is to realize he had a “voice” in 2008 because because he had no record that he had to chew on. The reason his voice is missing in 2012 is because he’s been choked to death by his record.
Look, Barry maybe be a narcissist, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be embarrassed to stand in front of people and not have a damn thing to showcase as a result of being given the unprecedented opportunity to actually be the President of the United States.

still doesn’t change the fact that this strategy failed (common sense)and that Brooks said it was smart.

Here in predominantly black and middle class Prince George’s County, MD. There are far, far more signs for and against the state’s Question #6 (Gay Marriage) and Question #7 (Casinos/Democrat slush fund)than there are Obama/Biden signs in yards, along streets and outside apartment complexes.
Even though Maryland will probably go for Obama. There is no black momentum for Obama this time around. I expect my high school polling place to be between not too busy and deserted when I cast my ballot tomorrow.
I also think the DNC is completely forgetting the 2010 mid term and the enormous number pissed off voters ( myself, included) who seek some cathartic payback for three and a half years of disappointment and financial hardship.
Obama is going to lose… Badly. Somewhere between Mondale and Carter badly. To a point beyond where Democrat generated Voter Fraud and UN overseers are irrelevant!
Jack Deth on November 5, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Exactly. He has worked as hard as he could and been amazingly successful in keeping the race as close as it is.
