Want to know who’ll win the election? Watch the Redskins game today

The Redskins have been a professional football team since 1933, when the Boston Braves changed their name to the Boston Redskins. In 1936, the Redskins played their first game during an election year. It’s likely no one noticed at the time, but the squad’s performance in its last home game before Election Day soon became arguably the best indicator of who would win the presidential race. A Redskins win meant the incumbent party would stay put. A Redskins loss meant the White House would change parties. With only one exception — 2004 — this trend has held in every election cycle.

So, tune in Sunday to see who will win Tuesday. Then impress all your not-in-the-know friends with your prognosticating prowess. The Skins are 3.5 point favorites, so President Obama has got to like his chances.

Actually the Skins have been right all along since Gore won the popular vote in 2000, he was ‘technically president’ in 2004.

In 1980 Jimmy Carter was supposedly wiping the floor with Ronald Reagan. Nationally the Gallup Poll in October gave Carter an 8 point lead of 47%-39%. On October 10, the New York Times/CBS poll reported that while Reagan had a 2 point lead over Carter in Pennsylvania Reagan was actually not doing well. Reagan’s Pennsylvania fundraising was weak, insisted the Times, which in turn meant the $700,000 budget for the Reagan phone bank operation had to be shaved to $400,000. Not to mention Reagan was trailing Carter in union households and getting absolutely whomped in Philadelphia 52%-15%.

The Gallup October poll that had Reagan losing nationally 47%-39% had, by election day, turned into a 50.7%-41% Reagan rout.

Just like with the lottery, there are no odds, there are no predictors. The chances of winning or losing are 50/50–either you win or you don’t and nothing else that has ever happened has anything to do with the outcome.

The Redskins are wearing Throwback uniforms, so I think it changes the whole thing. If they win in these uniforms, it only results in FDR getting elected.
