“Skills become obsolete, contacts atrophy, information atrophies, and they get stigmatized”
The pain of the long-term unemployed has persisted even as the overall jobs picture has brightened a bit and the unemployment rate has fallen to 7.8 percent. The new government report for October was due to be released on Friday morning.
“The problem is incredibly urgent,” said Kevin A. Hassett, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute and an adviser to Mitt Romney’s campaign. “Spain had a financial crisis in the late 1970s and has never seen its unemployment rate drop back to where it was before that crisis. The unemployed become discouraged, and ultimately the employment to population ratio might take a permanent hit.”…
About 800,000 workers want a job but have simply given up looking, and so are no longer even counted as unemployed. About 1.7 million people have joined the disability rolls since the recession began at the end of 2007, an increase of 24 percent, as workers use the disability program as a backdoor safety net when their unemployment insurance runs out. After searching for a new position for a year, a worker trying to regain employment finds that his chance to do so in the coming month falls below 10 percent.
As seen in the debates and on the campaign trail, the problem has largely fallen off politicians’ list of priorities.

Obama’s legacy in his endeavor of economic patriotism.

Okay, so, if the NYT recognizes this problem, then why did they endorse obama (I mean, other than the fact that they are a cog in the obama propaganda machine and they were ordered to, and paid to endorse him, of course)?

Well, that may be true, but a Spaniard is not an American.
An American is like a junk yard dog. He is not a purebred, he is not welcome at all of the dog shows.
But he is the one who is hungry, who shows his teeth when confronted, who will rip your heart out if he breaks his leash.
He is to be feared, he is to be admired.
He will do whatever is necessary to provide for his family – damn what the NYT or the Spanish have to say about it.

Alright, I’m not unsympathic, but this “disability” nonsense has got to be reined in. We need people back to work, now.

And yet, the Democrats will continue to try to bring in as many new immigrants as possible. Does anyone on the Left understand how this is a problem?

Romney hasn’t had a job since 2006. This explains so much.

That’s bull. Your skills atrophy only if you allow them to. I’ve been in several industries that suffered layoffs. Each time, I found ways to keep my skills up to date or improve them. And in this internet age, free training is available 24/7 all over the world.
I just re-learned Adobe InDesign after a lapse of about 12 years since I last had to use a desktop publishing program. It took me two weeks of swearing, but I came up with a great-looking book design.
I guess I forgot that I was supposed to just assume my skills were atrophied and not even try.
Bull. The opportunities are there for anyone who has the drive.

What is Ogabe’s excuse? He has never done anything but street hustle and choom?
tom daschle concerned on November 2, 2012 at 10:34 PM
Another reason Obama will win: pick the street hustler over the guy who’s had everything handed to him every time. And Romney’d be less of a clueless plutocrat if he’d ever smoked a little choom.

You really are horrible at trolling.

Dude, that much stoopid has gotta be painful.
What, exactly, is the fact that Romney’s term as governor ended in 2006 (Jan 4, 2007 actually) supposed to explain?
He has obviously kept his executive skills sharp.
You really should check the facts. Obama has had everything handed to him all his life without having to earn anything and fried his brain with a huge amount of dope.
Romney inherited a fortune and gave it all to charity. He worked and earned everything he has.

This 150,000 immigrants flooding into the country a month, a country with 20% real unemployment – is simply insane.
We need an immediate 10 year immigration moratorium.

It is strange how the NYT just assumes that the economy will just keep bumbling along and companies won’t be hiring any time soon. Of course, if they get their way, they will be right.
cptacek on November 3, 2012 at 12:55 AM
This would be less of a problem if the there weren’t so many burdens on hiring (minimum wage, insurance requirements, etc) and incentives for workers to refuse jobs that pay less than their previous job.
Count to 10 on November 3, 2012 at 8:49 AM
That wouldn’t accomplish anything — the problem is the people who are already breaking immigration law. Legal immigration is helpful to us — particularly since our birth rate is bellow replacement.
Count to 10 on November 3, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Are you confused? Romney isn’t a street hustler, but Obama has had everything handed to him his entire life.

You can’t even make this stuff up.
Thanks for the laugh urban elitist. As usual, your handle outs you.
