Dude?
In Hong Kong, affordable apartments are so scarce that people are living in spaces much like an enclosed bunk bed. These so called “coffin homes” fit a single bed and aren’t high enough to stand in. Residents share a common space with a toilet and sink and pay about $155-180 per month for the space. Nearby is some of the most expensive real estate and luxury stores among the city’s gleaming skyscrapers.

And while you’re at it, make the darker of the two alternating grey backgrounds for each comment be lighter. It’s so dark, it actually makes every second comment hard to read! Each time one makes a comment, one must endure the light-dark lottery and just pray that one doesn’t land on a dark box. It would take 30 seconds to lighten the background color in the blog template!

Funny thing is: one summer when i was in college, i worked on the eviction squad. When they came to clear them out, a couple of the guys recognized me. I wanted to ask them in for a couple beers when they were done, but it seemed kinda awkward…

I suggest Hong Kong be allowed to “purchase” some surrounding land from China to become part of Hong Kong itself. What this really amounts to is nothing more than moving the existing border further into Guangdong, maybe even the whole province or a few counties of it. Maybe a purchase of Shenzhen to allow the city (and culture) of Hong Kong to expand.
While Hong Kong is officially part of China, it is allowed a rather autonomous government. Have the people of Guangdong vote to see if they would like to become part of Hong Kong.

Is this the high-density city living that liberals prattle on about as a good thing?

That’s nothing… Old people in Hong Kong live in 6′ long 3 foot wide cages in basements that they rent for $1000 a month.
Kaptain Amerika on October 11, 2012 at 12:58 AM
FIFY. There isn’t enough space there after dinner.

Meh. Here we call them ‘bedspacers’, but we don’t enclose them. Lots of beds (from 8 to 12), bunk-bed style, in a single room with a common kitchen and toilet. We don’t charge hundreds per month either – anywhere from $40-$60, which includes electricity and water. Usually for people who live elsewhere but work in town, the tenants just want a place to sleep, eat, and get ready for work.

See, this is one reason why I fled the cities.
For those people who want to put up with this sort of thing, good for them.
But as a mammal, IDK how one can stand being packed in like a sardine like this.
Absolutely terrifying.

What makes you think the sardines enjoy it?!?
