2012 shaping up to be warmest year on record for continental U.S.
January-September was already the warmest first nine months, according to temperature data released Tuesday by the National Climatic Data Center.
Moreover, six of eight scenarios charted by the center have 2012 ending warmer than any other year in records that go back to 1895. The only scenarios where that would not happen are if the last quarter is among the 10 coldest on record.

We had 6 weeks of very warm weather that broke this Sunday. However, the summer and the the previous 2-3 summers have been mild.
Blake on October 10, 2012 at 7:44 PM
Hmmmm… What was the Planets temp for the year??? Normal because that would have been the headline.

Yeah Gaia! You go girl! Bring on the Global Hotness!

So what. I thought it was manmade global warming.
In USA, weather changes. Rainy day. Dry day. Hot summer. Cool summer.
petefrt on October 10, 2012 at 7:46 PM
And just how did 1985 compare to, say, 1300?
Meanwhile, Australia has just moved back into winter. Go figure.
OldEnglish on October 10, 2012 at 7:48 PM
Well that is indeed good news. That bird will be all warm and fuzzy if gore says gw is to blame? The next ‘bird’ film will have everyone frying in their own fat if you don’t get in line to give to see bho/dear joe and all involved keep this stupid bird thing going on for days?

I think we were warm this year. But it’s relative. How was the global temp? Is it only our half of the northern hemisphere? That I’d accept with the ocean phases the way they are.
I think it’s neat that when we might be heading for a record where I live, the previous record was set in 1933 or 1896. But if any of us should claim that 1933 was the hottest in the world, they’ll be quick to point out (since it was so long ago) that, NO, it was only hot in the United States that yeasr
But this year? not so much. They’re pretty transparent that way.

Looking at the map, I’m in the ONLY place that’s significantly below normal. Brrrrrr.
Where can I get me some of that Global Warming? Stop hogging it!

Unlike those whose offices are in an air conditioned office building in NYC, I spend almost all of my working hours outside in the sun caring for turfgrass – hence my nom de cyber. My shaved head is a shade of brown that cannot be replicated in any tanning salon at any price.
And I do not depend upon thermometers placed next to an asphalt runway at the local airport with nary a tree within a mile nor a field of grass to cool the air.
As far as I am concerned, this summer wasn’t any more miserable than any other. And I have been though half a century of them.
These people are LYING TO US TO FURTHER THEIR ANTI-HUMAN AGENDA.

Just make sure you never make reference to a big snowstorm in a conversation about global warming. After all, weather is only climate when Liberals can beat you over the head with it you crazy flatearther wingnutz.

The ‘global warming’ issue is perhaps the greatest potential source of political power ever conceived, greater even than socialist single-payer healthcare. They will never abandon it, it’s just too tempting for those that hunger for power.

Who cares? Good old Earth is going to keep on trucking long after humans are extinct. Whether it’s hot, warm or cold, it’s just not going to matter.
And at some point our sun is going to swallow this planet.

Hold on to your wallets!
This is all the ammunition the left needs to tax you more.
Why? Because they believe that is all they have to do to solve Global Warming.
It is the magic rainbow sugar unicorn fairy dust idea that taxes will stop Global Warming.
Of course, they will only tax us here in the USA. China can burn all the coal and oil they want. Their output of particulates and Greenhouse gasses magically don’t effect Global Warming at all.
Just our gasses and carbon output.

bernzright777 on October 10, 2012 at 8:04 PM
So if our time on earth is, as the libs are fond of claiming, an infinitesimally small amount of time in relation to the age of the earth, why would I possibly believe the temperatures measured in the even shorter amount of time we’ve had accurate thermometers can be extrapolated out over the complete history of the earth?
Time for you alarmists to give.it.up.

Honey-Gaia don’t care.
This illusion that the planet is oh so delicate is such BS.
connertown on October 10, 2012 at 8:11 PM
I once half-wrote and then got too distracted to finish an essay outlining the Five Claims that AGW alarmists must prove to justify their hysteria.
I should dig it out somewhere, but from memory, it was:
1. That Global Warming Exists.
This is their strongest point (though it still remains fairly weak), so it’s the one they like to emphasize. Yeah, the temperature has gone up about one degree over the last century and a half, at least if we can trust the numbers coming out of a politicized field (which I don’t, but that’s a different story).
2. That Global Warming Is Extreme.
FAIL. The “Hockey Stick Graph” was proven to be bogus. The temperature rise is actually comparably mild compared to historical precedents. Nothing stays exactly the same. Up a little, down a little, up a lot, down a lot, over the centuries, millennia, epochs. And life goes on. Big deal. Variation is normal.
3. That Global Warming Was Entirely Human-Caused.
MOSTLY FAIL. Almost impossible to prove this, since we have no “comparison Earth” with no people on it as a control test subject. Mostly likely we contributed a little bit to the warming, but most of that happened long long ago during the Industrial Revolution, when there were no emissions controls of any kind, and we may have changed the composition of the atmosphere to some small degree on a centuries-long scale. But there’s nothing we can do about that now (even if we wanted to, which we don’t). But the other 90+% of the cause of the small warming we’ve seen is due to natural causes beyond our control.
4. That Global Warming Won’t Be Naturally Corrected Cyclically.
Again, FAIL. Even the Gaia Theory posited that the Earth’s ecosystem will ALWAYS right itself and naturally come back into balance even if put under great strain. So we could spew out coal smoke like in Pittsburgh and Manchester in the 1880s and do it for a thousand years, and come back a millennium later, and everything would be back to normal. Asteroids hit the earth and cause sky-darkening that wipe out the dinosaurs…and everything later returned to normal. The sun went through variations and essentially scorched the Earth in the distant past…and everything eventually returned to normal. That’s nature.
… and in my opinion, the most important:
5. That Global Warming Is Bad for the Globe, Overall.
MASSIVE FAIL. The don’t call it the “Greenhouse Effect” for nothing. What are greenhouses for? Growing more plants! As the temperature goes up, more rain fails, and over time more of the Earth will be converted to tropical rainforest. Arctic regions would become temperate. Greater biodiversity, more plant life, and thus more animal life, an explosion of species, and a boon to existing species. The ONLY species that might suffer under this scenario are a handful of purely arctic species who can only exist in freezing temperatures. (And even they can adapt, mostly: Polar bears do fine when on green land as opposed to ice floes.) But the alarmists try to focus on the few species that will suffer, and don’t want you to notice that the rest of the planet will BENEFIT from global warming!

I love how, when global temperatures are down, they shift to telling us North America had the hottest year on record. Funny how they don’t compare apples to apples.

NBC also thinks that the Benghazi story is being politicized…
d1carter on October 10, 2012 at 8:18 PM
*sigh* How many times do we have to go through this crap?
First off, they keep limiting the area they’re talking about. Now we’re not even talking about the whole United States but the continental United States. So, exclude our coldest state from the mix. Plus, ask Great Britain how warm it’s been over there this year.
Second, it’s the warmest year “on record.” Well, our records only go back a little over one hundred years. Let me say that again. One hundred years. In the history of a planet scientists estimate is 4.54 billion years ago. So our records cover roughly 0.000002% of the planet’s history. In other words, our records are worth precisely jack squat.
And finally, who cares either way? No causation has been credibly established between man’s behavior and these temperatures, and virtually every bit of research done on the matter has been flawed and fudged in a variety of ways.
In short, shut up.

Global Warming means more antarctic ice…for reals.

NCDC adjusts temperatures depending on year. More recent temperatures are adjusted up significantly from the raw measurements.
GLOBAL temperatures are not up in 2012 according to GISS and HADCRUT. Europe had one of its coldest, wettest summers in 100 years. It is looking like an early cold winter for the middle and eastern US, too.
crosspatch on October 10, 2012 at 8:28 PM
Is this kind of like the European warming in the Middle Ages that (according to the left) didn’t happen because they can’t verify what was happening on the rest of the Earth?
If it doesn’t happen everywhere at teh same time, it doesn’t count. According to their rules.
How was Europe this year?
