Lowering expectations: Reince Priebus calls Biden a “gifted orator”
“Most people understand that Joe Biden has been debating for a long time,” said Priebus on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.
Priebus said that while Biden had been the source of numerous gaffes on the campaign trail, Republicans should be cautious. “Joe Biden has of late put his foot in his mouth in very public ways, I mean he said that the middle class was crushed under the policies of Obama and Biden and he’s said some things that were problematic,” said Priebus.
“Paul is going to do a great job, but also I think it’s very important that people understand that, people realize that Joe Biden is a gifted orator, is very good at rhetoric, is very relatable,” he added.

Lowering expectations: Reince Priebus calls Biden a “

He’s a gifted liar.

Geez, Biden is Homer Simpson…a cartoon character. What scares me is that people may actually prefer a cartoon character to reality these days. On the merits, Ryan is going to stomp him…but Homer may still be lovably goofy enough to pull the witless crowd his way.

Paul Cincy wins it from jump street.

Unfortunately, I dont think its possible to lower the expectations for Ryan in this one.
Zaggs on October 7, 2012 at 8:11 PM
he’s a gifted orator alright. He loves to orate to the nurses, biker chicks, and Greek babes in every restaurant and HyVee Store he happens to visit.
ted c on October 7, 2012 at 8:12 PM
I think one of Paul Ryan’s biggest challenges will be to maintain a straight face…..
ted c on October 7, 2012 at 8:13 PM
He’s also a gifted singer and dancer. His rendition of “The Villages” is stunning.

Okay, this is how the cat bats around a mouse.

A classic.

Yeah Biden could probably do a better job at connecting with viewers than the math-centric Ryan. Especially the undecided voters, who are probably not the kind of people who like math very much.

Biden is a gifted orator, or debater. He is a seasoned veteran. He ran for senate, what, 6 times? And he ran for president and went through dozens of debates. It’s a huge mistake to walk in to this debate thinking that Biden is going to be some kind of imbecile. We are walking into an ambush.

Ryan will do well.
blatantblue on October 7, 2012 at 8:19 PM
Heh!! I’ve never seen that video clip before. I was half hoping he’d stumble over and pass out…
ted c on October 7, 2012 at 8:21 PM
Biden is a moronic gaffe machine.
wildcat72 on October 7, 2012 at 8:26 PM
I find it hard to believe Biden winning this one, but wouldn’t it be funny if he at least did better than Obama?
MeatHeadinCA on October 7, 2012 at 8:26 PM
A “gifted orator”? Surely he said it in jest. Sarcasm. Mockery.
I mean really, Reince, you want to lower expectations, but this is jumping the shark.
petefrt on October 7, 2012 at 8:27 PM
Consider this. Romney connected well with the undecided voters when throwing out numbers.
MeatHeadinCA on October 7, 2012 at 8:28 PM
I thought I heard on the radio that he said a gifted orator since the early 1900′s, but I could have misheard that.
MeatHeadinCA on October 7, 2012 at 8:28 PM
He could always just remember what Obama + Biden + team have done to this country.
MeatHeadinCA on October 7, 2012 at 8:29 PM
A gifted orator?
My pet frogs are gifted cyclists.
petefrt on October 7, 2012 at 8:32 PM
This is true. I couldn’t look at Biden OR Obama across the room without laughing at them.
wildcat72 on October 7, 2012 at 8:48 PM
Neither clean, nor articulate.
Bouncing Beatnik on October 7, 2012 at 8:54 PM
“Gifted orator” is just Reince’s code for Biden the gift that keeps on giving is a gift to the Republicans in the veep debate. Biden may be an experienced debater but if he tries to be cute that’s when his foot flies into his mouth so we’ll have to see if he goes cutsie.
stukinIL4now on October 7, 2012 at 9:02 PM
Good one, Reince. Every family has a crazy, racist, sexist, blow-hard uncle, and one thing we all say is, “Gee, but he’s a good orator, isn’t he?”

I have mixed feelings about Ryans chances to be honest. On one hand, Paul Ryan is an incredibly smart man and a gifted speaker, and Biden comes across as an brash idiot. On the other hand, Biden’s been debating for a long long time, where-as Paul Ryan relatively inexperienced.
I Think Ryan will be fine, if the Romney campaign did its homework correctly and stuck him with a good debate couch. I wouldn’t even count Ryan out without a debate couch, but with a good debate couch there’s a good chance he’ll walk away from that debate having scored a lot of points.
WolvenOne on October 7, 2012 at 10:19 PM
I was worried about Biden vs. Palin, and she held her own with him, with a lot less background knowledge than Ryan has. Ryan will do just fine. He’s got this.
And debate couches aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. They’re lumpy…and there’s that bar that hits the middle of your back.
Rational Thought on October 7, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Just to elaborate a bit. I think Biden’s likely going to go heavily on the offense, and may interrupt Biden frequently to prevent him from being able to effectively answer attacks. It’s a very high risk strategy, but it appears Obama is now definitively behind, so the risk may be worth the benefit.
Additionally, team Obama may make the decision that Biden can afford to look like a jerk, so long as he opens up a new line of attack. Not sure I agree with that, but I could see a political analyst coming to that decision.
WolvenOne on October 7, 2012 at 10:25 PM
If Palin can beat him, than so can Ryan.
Johnny 100 Pesos on October 7, 2012 at 10:30 PM
Well you’re probably overall right. Still, I hope they’ve had him doing practice debates or something. He’s obviously smarter than Biden, but the lack of debate experience worries me slightly.
WolvenOne on October 7, 2012 at 10:40 PM
The over/under for Ryan’s use of the word buried is 4. I’m taking the over.
Ted Torgerson on October 7, 2012 at 10:59 PM
I think Ryan could win this debate from either side.
