Gallup: 39% rate Ryan excellent or very good, 42% fair or poor
Romney pollster Neil Newhouse said in a statement that the findings reflect the fact that Ryan, a House member since 1999, isn’t widely known.
USA TODAY/Gallup Polls of registered voters after the announcements of running mates since Dick Cheney in 2000 all showed more positive reactions. Only Dan Quayle in a 1988 Harris Poll of likely voters was viewed less positively than Ryan, with 52% rating Quayle as a “fair” or “poor” vice presidential choice. The Ryan poll includes all adults, not just registered voters…
The poll also finds 17% of adults say they’re more likely to vote for Romney in November because Ryan is his running mate — about the same impact Palin had for John McCain four years ago among registered voters.
Republicans, however, see the appeal in Ryan, who was hailed this weekend as a bold, innovative thinker by party stalwarts. The poll finds 36% of Republicans are now more likely to vote for Romney.

This was a poll of adults, not even registered voters.

Combined with his ZERO recognition and you have…squat…but it’s a poll!!!
winston on August 13, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Only going up once he gets on the stump. Momentum!
AeroSpear on August 13, 2012 at 11:26 AM
How many rate him “fair to good”? Interesting that they lump “fair” in with “poor”.
crosspatch on August 13, 2012 at 11:28 AM
These kinds of polls are idiotic. I doubt 81% of registered voters even know who Ryan is. A solid 20% of the fair/poor review are choom smokers who are only registered because Acorn paid them $5 to register.
NotCoach on August 13, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Since when it “fair” equivalent to “poor”? That’s some weird semantics right there.
ButterflyDragon on August 13, 2012 at 11:30 AM
He’ll need to be very aggressive about introducing himself.
This increasingly seems like the motivation to me.
Doomberg on August 13, 2012 at 11:30 AM
This crock poll surveyed 1006 adults with no information of party breakdown. It is not worth the paper it was printed on.

I was thinking the same thing.

Democrats = trying to drive us off the cliff at 100 mph.
Paul Ryan = the brakes.
No wonder they hate him.
Good Lt on August 13, 2012 at 11:32 AM
The left wing political junkies who are aware of Ryan will be against him from the get-go. No surprise there.
He scares them because he comes across as sincere, informed, well spoken, and not given to personal attacks on his opponents. Wait until the public at large has a chance to watch him and listen to him.
I’m more optimistic than I’ve been for awhile.
Drained Brain on August 13, 2012 at 11:32 AM
I was wondering that too. And if I remember right, Biden was seen similarly by voters…that fact is these numbskulls aren’t familiar with Ryan yet.
changer1701 on August 13, 2012 at 11:32 AM
So basically a majority of Americans either are ok with him or really like him. And that’s a poll of adults, not likely voters.
Doughboy on August 13, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Bring it on USA Today you are doing our work for us you morons….
The numbers will change when Ryan says “My plan, the ONLY plan to address ANY of this protects anyone over the age of 54 and does not STEAL 700 Billion from the Medicare trust fund to do it Mr. President.”
so you go right on ahead and lay the ground for our ad blitz….
Mitt you’re a genius.
harlekwin15 on August 13, 2012 at 11:37 AM
I’d like to see the numbers of fair vs. poor. It may also be that “fair” is phrased as “neutral” and that’s being treated as “I don’t know anything about him.”
Of course, I still don’t know as it’s reasonable to lump a “neutral/don’t know rating in with poor…”
Ah well, at least Gallup was relatively up front about it.
Doomberg on August 13, 2012 at 11:37 AM
42%. That’s barack’s ceiling.
Rational Thought on August 13, 2012 at 11:38 AM
So where is the poll? I just googled for it, and nobody who is quoting it actually has or links to the poll.
BobMbx on August 13, 2012 at 11:43 AM
This is a meaningless metric. What percentage of these Republicans were unlikely to vote for Romney? A better question would address enthusiasm.

Last Week’s Democrats = Romney Killed My Wife!
This Week’s Democrats = Ryan Will Kill Your Grandmother!
Desperation is setting in.
They thought they’d be much farther ahead at this point, and they’re freaking out that Romney didn’t pick somebody who America is going to see as personally unappealing.
Just wait until the Ryan vs. Biden veep debate.
That will be the end of this charade. They won’t be able to hide behind their skirts in the media anymore. It will be painfully evident to all with brain cells who is more qualified to address our economic problems.
Good Lt on August 13, 2012 at 11:45 AM
…other than DDRNTN, MadCon and a few other defiant “conservatives” (who may or may not be registered Republicans, but I digress). I put the percentage of Republicans who were unlikely to vote for Romney at all at .001%- a number I’m pulling out of the air but which is about as reliable as this idiotic poll.

This is Gallup. The poll is of adults, not registered voters, not likely voters. No party mix given.
And the questions determining the headline are not given.
This is just another advocacy poll for the administration.

Next Week’s Democrats = Let’s kill Biden before he gets up on a stage with Ryan!
trigon on August 13, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Sure an odd way to ask a question.
Fair or Poor
Very Good or Excellent.
Where is Good?
Of course when Obama’s approval is polled, it’s Strongly Approve or Somewhat (Fair) Approve.
kevinkristy on August 13, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Why is fair put in with poor?
Isn’t it usually fair, good, very good or excellent?
And poor or very poor?
Is King Choom calling the shots at Gallup?
applebutter on August 13, 2012 at 12:21 PM
BWAHahahaha!
If they were enetertaining the idea a week ago, they’re PLANNING it now!

Couple Caveats
1: Poor wording, Fair shouldn’t be lumped in with poor.
2: Sunday polling, tends to benefit the left side of the spectrum somewhat.
3: Adults, not registered voters.
4: USAToday/Gallop tends to have a more leftward slant in its results than when its just Gallop.
Not that I’m particularly displeased, 39-42 is essentially within margin of error, and if fair were separated from poor/very poor that 39% would suddenly look a lot more impressive.
WolvenOne on August 13, 2012 at 12:42 PM
The question should have been phrased as poor or bad, vs. fair, good, or excellent.
Red Creek on August 13, 2012 at 12:45 PM
In Addition
Todays Rasmussen tracking poll shows Romney leading by 3%, and supposedly doing even better when leaners are thrown in. This is a slight improvement over polls taken just before Ryan was announced as the VP, and most of the improvement came from Sunday polling, which has historically been the worst day of the week for Romney on both Rasmussen and Gallop.
In Ryan were, “bad,” for the ticket, it would’ve shown up there first and foremost.
WolvenOne on August 13, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Horse taters. I don’t trust a poll that finds that much negative perception of Ryan.
J.E. Dyer on August 13, 2012 at 1:48 PM
The ABC poll showing Ryan having distinct favor with the elderly released today is the one to care about.
