Nearly 90% who gave Obama $200 or more in 2008 haven’t donated this time
In 2008, more than 550,000 gave more than $200 to Barack Obama, entering their names in the longest list of individual donors ever seen in American politics.
That list was a snapshot of the hope Obama inspired in a cross sections of liberals, young professionals, African-Americans, and Democrats who saw in him a generational and historic moment. But now, as Obama struggles to keep pace with his 2008 fundraising clip, that list offers a cross-section of Democratic disappointment and alienation. According to a BuzzFeed analysis of campaign finance data, 88% of the people who gave $200 or more in 2008 — 537,806 people — have not yet given that sum this year. And this drop-off isn’t simply an artifact of timing. A full 87% of the people who gave $200 — the sum that triggers an itemized report to the Federal Elections Commission — through April of 2008, 182,078 people, had not contributed by the end of last month.
Interviews with dozens of those drop-off donors reveal the stories of Democrats who still plan to pull the lever for the president, but whose support has gone from fervent to lukewarm, or whose economic circumstances have left them without money to spare. The interviews and the data are the substance of an “enthusiasm gap” spurred by the distance between the promise of the campaign and the reality of governing, one that has begun to deepen Democratic gloom about this November’s election.
“Where’s the change I can believe in?” asked Lisa Pike, a 55-year-old from Williamsburg, Va. with a small medical transcription business who gave $658 in 2008.

I was just out in a trendy part of Los Angeles this evening, and more than one person said they voted for Obama in 2008 but have no interest in voting this election.
John the Libertarian on June 4, 2012 at 12:15 AM
Perhaps they should send out national mailers listing nearby Obama donors and whether or not they’ve donated recently, so that others can knock on their doors and shame them into giving money. I hear that’s really popular these days.
MadisonConservative on June 4, 2012 at 12:22 AM
This is the problem of having Anna Wintour doing commercials for you. Let that +++++ pay for it, I have meals to pay for.
I’m not contributing to the billionaire on my side, either. Every Romney mailer gets 86′d. I’d rather contribute to local candidates.
Marcus on June 4, 2012 at 12:23 AM
Those without jobs find it difficult to donate.
CW on June 4, 2012 at 12:27 AM
No wonder they haven’t donated. He has the hope and all they are left with is change.
Warner Todd Huston on June 4, 2012 at 12:29 AM
Wow, the freeloaders don’t want to give money. Shocking.
Flange on June 4, 2012 at 12:32 AM
I’ve heard a lot of people who voted for McCain in 2008 say the same thing.

It is hard to give money when they turn the verify mechanism back on the website. Wait a month or two and if things don’t change the system will be turned off again and then the money will shockingly appear as if donors were just waiting for a sign.
Betenoire on June 4, 2012 at 12:45 AM
So they had money.
And they were parted from it.
Imagine that.

It is immoral to allow a fool to keep his money, or some such…maybe there is a tad of hope now.

Doodad Pro and the rest of the illegals and non-existent people are rethinking their contribution to the American election? Not as much coming in from Palis in Gaza this time? What happened? Someone turned the AVS on this time? It can’t be anything McShame said because he was happy to watch the Indonesian Dog-Eating Retard break every campaign finance law on the books. McShame looked at it as his duty to let the Indonesian make a mockery of our system and nation – and he will be well recorded in history for his … efforts, the miserable piece of sh…

Donated this time? What percentage has asked for their money back?

Middle & lower class former supporters are all broke. I’m surprised Obama hasn’t found a loophole to allow EBT donations.

The lack of donations is a hopeful sign, but the statements of some of the people

They have no more money but they continue to support him. They think things would be better with a single payer system. They didn’t get from Obama what they expected. They don’t blame him for anything. They blame republicans who had no power for half of Obama’s term and still only control the House of Reps while dems control the Senate and the Presidency. Not one word about gas prices and the cost of energy, the very engine of the economy. Obama’s adm. has done more punish energy suppliers than anyone else. These people are in denial, that is the only conclusion here.
Dollayo on June 4, 2012 at 7:15 AM
And I’ve run into a lot of people who didn’t vote in 2008, they weren’t enthused by McCain, but are voting this time for Romney.
Romney’s a much more likeable guy. And his libertarian-leaning “fiscally conservative/socially moderate” views are far more broadly appealing.
Libertarians for Romney!

Anyone who voted for McCain but can’t do the same for Romney, who is actually taking the fight to Obama is suspect in my book.
thebrokenrattle on June 4, 2012 at 7:37 AM
Glad that we can’t literally watch her in the ballot box. But you know that she won’t trumpet her vote, if she did so last time. Either way, she is going to cast her vote in shame, for her vote in 2008 if she votes Romney and for her vote this time if she votes Obama.
thebrokenrattle on June 4, 2012 at 7:42 AM
I saw an article at Forbes yesterday that read like that, and of course the Dowd piece, linked from Drudge.
So now we have three or four articles, lost count now, (including one where Zero and Axelfraud were out telling donors to get off their butts) reporting that Zero’s donors are not giving him money.
Further, he appeared at SIX fundraisers on Friday.
Team Zero’s burn rate must be phenomenal. Does anyone think they manage their money any better than ours? Zero is running out of cash.

“Where’s the change?”
Not a bad slogan for Romney.
Dextrous on June 4, 2012 at 8:14 AM
Naturally, the news media needs to call and ask them why (And don’t tell me that doesn’t apply a little pressure on those donors). The news media again doing Obama re-election work as an undeclared in-kind contribution.
michaelo on June 4, 2012 at 8:15 AM
I still think about a middle aged woman, highlighted on some news magazine show exhaulting harcore Obama volunteers. She took out an equity loan to pay for her son’s community college education. He would be the first from their family to attend college.
Instead, she donate the maximum to the Obama campaign. Her son could wait but Obama’s election would be a historic event. I often wonder if she lost her house or if her son ever attended college.
She will, no doubt, “pull the lever” again for Obama.

Palestinians are being affected by the down cycle of the world economy too, they just don’t have the spare coin to send to TFGP this time around.

I was curious if you got a mailer? Also, I hear people over at Dem Underground are livid over this. Is there going to be a bad backlash against the unions over this? They threatened to expose people’s names after tomorrow if they didn’t go vote. Talk about out of control.
Well, I was just curious how it was going over there. We’ll be praying for Scott Walker and all of you as it all unfolds tomorrow.

But the “small” “donation” mega-bundlers are still as generous as ever?
It’s good to know that Mr. and Mrs. Abcd Efghijk and their twenty four children still support Obama.

Some ESA group called and wanted to know what our utility bill is. Anyway would not tell them anything, but I asked if this was an 0b0z0 plan to pay for or help us pay for our bill. He said “pretty much!”
So I suspect this is a way to get people on his side by giving away billions more of our tax money, to those who are stupid enough to believe it. I was so mad! I called the utility company and they have nothing to do with it (even though they told me they were working with the local utility).
Anyone else had such a call?
Bambi on June 4, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Cuz most of them were mythical last time and the prepaid cards haven’t been printed yet.
