D.C. Council member Marion Barry yesterday stepped up his campaign to mend relations with Asians, apologizing again for disparaging remarks he made about Koreans and Filipinos, and pledging to work to improve ties between them and African Americans.
Yet on his way toward racial harmony, Barry (D-Ward 8) committed another faux pas and presided over a sometimes raucous community meeting at which African Americans repeated complaints about the way Koreans maintain carryout shops…
“The Irish caught hell, the Jews caught hell, the Polacks caught hell,” Barry said, invoking a word that Polish people have viewed as disparaging. “We want Ward 8 to be the model of diversity.”

I don’t think there’s anything this crack smoking drifter can say to further degrade himself, or for that matter to embarrass the constituents who vote for him regardless of what he says or does. He’s already at rock bottom.

Oh noooooo trust me, Marion Barry can and will humiliate his constitutes far far more than he already has and find even great depth to plummet to.

Because Americans are weary of the White guy’s racist gaffes.
Time for some dark humor.

Interesting that that particular thread of racial disharmony extends from sea to shining sea. In the Los Angeles riots of 1992, after the riots erupted around Normandie and Florence, the mob realized that the LAPD was not going to intervene and immediately swarmed north into Koreatown. There was open gunfire between Korean shopkeepers and armed looters. Several Koreans lost their lives defending their businesses, and the following year only 1 in 4 burned-out business re-opened. Riot postmortems revealed an enormous gulf of acrimony between the Korean American and black communities, the latter blaming the former for taking money out of the black community and not hiring black employees.
Koreatown rebounded, and grew exponentially, fueled by the entrepreneurial drive of its citizens. Today the contrast between vibrant, bustling Koreatown and South Central couldn’t be starker. There probably still would be complaints about the vampire capitalist Koreans if any of the South Central population of the 90′s were still around. But within a decade, after some fierce turf fighting, the looters were largely displaced by the latinos. As Rodney King pleaded at the height of the riots, “Can’t we all just get along?” Ask the Koreans. Ask the Latinos.

How are you suppose to take the citizens of that city serious when they keep this guy around and the only true unity they have experienced was getting rid of the mayor and school chancellor who were actually repairing their schools. What a world!

Honestly? I think second and third generation Poles are more offended by it than first generation. My mom came here from Poland, as well as most of her family, and they use the term all the time (from what my mother has told me, it’s actually a Polish form of “Pole” and she doesn’t understand why people think she would be offended) It only really becomes offensive when you put the word “dumb” in front of it. I use the term when talking with my mom’s family, and no one is offended because they all use it, too. (But not outside my mom’s family — I’m sensitive to other people’s concerns)
I understand that people see it as offensive, but I’ve never thought of it that way because of my upbringing.

Eh, the Polish are tough enough to handle it.

I have watched this idiot since he came to Washington, D.C. in the 1960′s with his rat buddy Stokely Carmichael.
He is as he has always been. a no good, jive a**ed, street corner hustler. Shiftless race baiter.
He represents the 8th ward in D.C.; the poorest and most hopeless section of the City. All he does is run his mouth.

On WMAL this morning, it was suggested that Marion Barry is an Archie Bunker. Look, Archie had his flaws – the show was about highlighting them in contrast to his rarely-exhibited endearing and admirable qualities. Comparing him to Marion Barry is a gross insult.
Watching All in the Family nowadays is a different experience than it was in the 70′s, because it’s so obvious that Archie was right about his son-in-law – he really was a meathead.
Regarding Ward 8, one can only conclude that the majority of Barry’s constituents agree with the hateful sentiments he expresses, and the lifestyle that he’s lived. Otherwise he wouldn’t be re-elected.

When it comes to Mayor Bradley, you’re free to base your opinions on what is known about him.
I’m here all night!

Marion Barry is a joke. I have to say though that what bugs me more is the somber, indignant reaction from the association representing Polish Americans. If anyone is feigning oppression over the post-WW-II Polish jokes that were unquestionably offensive but have almost completely fallen away into desuetude, probably not even remembered by most Americans now, they are really playing the faux-victim card in a major way. Give it a rest, people.
