Remembering Romney and Cranbrook
Several email correspondents have asked me to comment on last week’s story in the Washington Post about Mitt Romney’s high school years since I also attended Cranbrook School; I was there from 1956 to 1962 and Romney was there from 1959 to 1965.
The story leads with an account of Romney leading other students to hold down another student, now deceased, and cutting off his long blond hair. It’s a nasty incident, but alas not atypical of the kind of thing teenage boys do to each other. In a Fox News radio interview Romney said he has no recollection of the incident but apologized for any pranks that “went too far.” …
I think it’s worth noting that the framing of the Post story—the suggestion that Romney and the others picked on this schoolmate because they thought he was gay—is anachronistic. In spring 1965 long hair was associated with surfers (the Beach Boys had their first national hit record in 1964) and the Beatles (who made their first U.S. appearance in January 1965). And hair length was a big issue in the 1960s. Men of the World War II generation, who had memories of military short haircuts, took umbrage when teenagers left their hair grow, and fathers would badger their sons to get haircuts. In addition, the Post had to make a correction which took some of the sting out of the story but initially left it unnoted on the web version.

Instead of cutting the boys hair, they should have farted in his face. It’s just as effective a means of bullying, but leaves no telltale mark the deed was done in case the kid complains to the adults.

Which pollster is it? Drudge hasn’t said yet. Either way, that sounds about right, even without the gay marriage controversy. The idea that Obama was gonna even have a shot at that state this time around has always been farcical IMO.

Where IS angryed? I usually take the weekend off from following HA much, and I haven’t seen him at all since I jumped back into the HA fray on Monday morning.

Mister Ed seems to have gone out to pasture since his epic meltdown last week. Besides squealing his normal hatred of Romney, he went off the deep end and showed his true colors re. his “respect” for the U.S. Military.
And I’m sure it didn’t help his happiness yesterday when his favorite “poll” number cruncher, the NY Times’ Nate Silver, suggested the momentum could be going in “Mittard’s” direction.

If this is the worst thing the media can dredge up from Mitt Romney’s entire background, then he is inelligible to run for President of the United States.
…Because he should be made a saint instead.

Honestly, people who can’t or won’t impeach the credibility of the alleged witnesses to this story should just plain shut up about it. Their obsessing only keeps it on life support.

angryed probably would have wanted this said.

Why is this still being brought up zzzzzzzzzz
I guess it makes Romney appear less vanilla is that the point of conservatives keeping this story going?
That’s all it is a story, because Mitt Romney doesn’t remember the incident, and the person being discussed is dead.

The real news in this article is that Romney had an African-American roommate at Cranbrook. Is he alive and why is he not being interviewed?
Michael Barone is right about the long hair be associated with The Beach Boys and the Beatles, not gays. I was born in 1951 and graduated from public high school in 1969. I grew up on the deep south and a military town. I am also gay. Long hair was not associated with being gay, effeminacy was the defining characteristic. Long hair was not tolerated at my very large high school until after I left.
