Chinese dissident leaves U.S. embassy as China promises to treat him well
Mr. Chen would be allowed to enroll at a university to pursue his law studies, a profession in which he is self-taught, the senior official said. “He will have several university options,” one of the officials said.
The American officials said they were satisfied with the pledges from the Chinese authorities that Mr. Chen, 40, would be allowed to live a normal life. The Chinese promised to report any actions against him, they said.
Precisely what the Chinese government offered as a way of protection for Mr. Chen was not immediately clear. The American officials went out of their way to praise the Chinese negotiators. They described them as working “intensely and with humanity.”…
The two American officials declined to address the demand that the United States apologize for sheltering Mr. Chen and that the United States investigate the circumstance in which the embassy was used in what the Chinese said was an “abnormal” way.

Will the Chicoms bill his family for the bullet they put in his head?
swinia sutki on May 2, 2012 at 9:22 AM
So much for that Beacon of Hope thingie that America used to be known for, now we hand over blind dissidents to thugs so that PBHO doesn’t have to get his panties twisted having to say NO to the Chinese.
Man, every day I think that fud in the White House can’t get any worse, and every day he proves me wrong.
Bishop on May 2, 2012 at 9:23 AM
And no one tried to talk him out of it???

And that’s a promise you can take to the grave . . . . er, the bank, Mr. Chen!
AZCoyote on May 2, 2012 at 9:24 AM

” Blind Dissident Picks Chinese Water Torture Over Hillarys’ Harping”
So much for dissension being patriotic, none shall embarrass or make the Lyin kING actually work!

No doubt he will get the special Falun Gong treatment.
viking01 on May 2, 2012 at 9:37 AM
this is why they turned him over ….
conservative tarheel on May 2, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I’m guessing the embassy was (quietly) being told “your pathetic president won’t back you up, and if you don’t turn him over RIGHT F*CKING NOW we’re going to come get him.”
No doubt. The only consolation is that the people who were supposed to be guarding him may get the same treatment in the next cell over.
Communist tyrants do not like being shown up for the incompetent doofuses they are, much less in front of the entire world. (thanks to the ‘net) Let a blind man escape from custody? You’d better flee the nation or eat a bullet, because the retribution is going to be horrible.

Too bad he’s not an American, where dissidents can die of natural causes.

galtani on May 2, 2012 at 9:49 AM
And by “natural causes,” of course, you mean death-from-above-Hellfire-goodness.

If that sack of $hit was a ‘dissident’, then my name is George Washington.

Never make the mistake of depending on Barack Obama’s devotion to political freedom, to save you. Obama has no devotion to freedom.
RBMN on May 2, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Please don’t think I’m equating them.
I wasn’t trying to say they were both dissident – just ‘citizens’ in the most strict sense of the word.
Washington Nearsider on May 2, 2012 at 9:58 AM
Does anyone else remember the seven Christians who lived in the US embassy in Moscow for years while they were trying to escape persecution from the Soviets?
Good grief. Even Jimmy Carter was more willing to stand up to the communists than Obama.

No worries. If I didn’t know me, I’d flip out too. I phrased it pretty poorly. It’s early, and my caffeine hasn’t kicked in.
Though, I did think the ‘Hellfire-goodness’ was a tip-off
Washington Nearsider on May 2, 2012 at 10:05 AM
It was either on his own, or Hillary promised the Elian Gonzales treatment.
Buh-Bye Mr Chen.

I guess the good news is that someone will get a new kidney. Sorry to the freedom lovers, but “We are all socialists now”.

Another Win for Hillary.
Has there been a worse SOS in the last 30 years?
huckleberryfriend on May 2, 2012 at 10:12 AM
He didn’t request asylum in the US. His friends have made it known on the internet before today that Mr. Chen prefers to remain in China.
I expect him to be quite safe, particularly now that he has such a high profile in the US.
DarkCurrent on May 2, 2012 at 10:18 AM
I was wondering why Obama wasn’t touting his Nobel Peace Prize during the campaign. Even he realizes that he doesn’t deserve it.
blammm on May 2, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Oh, yeah, like the US is really going to have any say in the matter. What are we going to do if they hurt him? Fire off a strongly worded letter? Brandish our credit rating?
CurtZHP on May 2, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Slow Joe Biden said Chen can easily go into hiding ’cause they all look alike.

Thrown out of the embassy and under the bus…
albill on May 2, 2012 at 10:43 AM
It is true that the US has ever-diminishing leverage against China, but they do care at least a little about their image in the world.
Do you recall a while back there was a rebellion against local officials in a town called Wukan down in Guangdong? The incident was in HA headlines. Many HA commenters were of the opinion that the PLA would move in a wipe out the village, much as many today seem to expect summary execution for Mr Chen. I commented that I thought it would be resolved peacefully, based on my closer perspective than most of the people here. In fact it was resolved peacefully as I predicted (though never reported on HA for some reason…).
Here I predict the government of the PRC will abide by any assurances they gave the US regarding Mr. Chen.

Whooooooooooooo could have seen this coming?
NickDeringer on May 2, 2012 at 10:53 AM
This administration trusts Communists, drug cartels, jihadists, and genocidal tyrants more than they trust Republicans, as far as their actions show.
I guess that’s what they think is “smart diplomacy”.
Socratease on May 2, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Promises to treat him well. Yeah, right. Define treat him well. Give him a quick death with a bullet to the back of his head?

Obama sacrificed another family.
Name one people who are free, or more free, due to Obama.
Freedom took a huuuuuge turn to the abyss since he took office.

Not necessarily. As long as he toes the line, and agrees to fully cooperate with the government’s propaganda effort for the rest of his life, he may be rewarded quite handsomely.
It’s the millions of people who DON’T make international news who are screwed.
