“We’re going to do the best we can”
“We’re gonna try,” Santorum told reporters here Friday night when asked if he’ll win the state, adding “We’re going to do the best we can.”…
If Santorum isn’t sure he can win Michigan, it’s not clear why he’s devoting resources to the state as opposed to the more delegate-rich Super Tuesday contests he’s more likely to win. Chalk another one up to a by-the-seat-of-the-pants campaign strategy.

How about because the narrative is that Michigan is Romney’s “must win home state” and even if Santorum doesn’t win if he shows well enough the media
willmay* be talking how this shows both Romney’s strengths as well as derail some momentum which at this stage in the game is the goal- hang in as the anti-Romney and look to be an alternative who can win.*Or maybe they will talk about how Santorum couldn’t pull it together and is fading. Honestly the niche stream media can’t seem to make up their mind on a narrative right now, other than of course that the president has the power and thus responsibility to deal with every problem in the nation…until a Democrat is in the office and then its “Hey, he is just one guy.”

lol. “seat of the pants” that’s rich. rick is investing in MI with his limited funds in order to make Mitt defend his “home state” and to continue his momenteum. As it is if he follwed this guy’s advice and invested in super Tuesday primaries instead Mitt would have won Az and MI without a fight the narrative would have been set that Mitt is the assumed nominee and Super tuesday no matter how well Rick or Newt did would become meaningless. Rick has a plan and that is to deliver a knock out punch to Mitt in MI if able and if not to at least make it appear that there is still a fight going on so Super tuesday matters. If Rick comes in a good second or wins he recieves an infusion of cash and will be able to compete more effectivly in Super tuesday. the only reason Rick would not compete in MI is if he was going to lose by a wide margin or get blown out.
Now the narrative is set if Mitt doesn’t win he will be seen as too damaged to be the nominee and if he doesn’t get a blow out win in MI it will be seen as Mitt not being able to close the deal and the fight will go on. Rick has a lot to gain from competing in MI and not much to lose. So why would he chuck all of that potential to compete in primaries that may mean little when they occur if he allows Mitt to run uncontested in MI.
that is the same mindset btw that the GOP house uses when they say they need to conserve their politcal capital. You can’t save up politcal capital. You either use it while the Sun is shinning or it goes away.

Not at all. MI is seen as one of the “home states” for Mitt since his dad was gov there. Anything less then a big win is a loss for Mitt. Mitt can’t just squeak by with a win and be seen as the assumed nominee.

that’s because they don’t kow what helps the dems more. They are being told Rick would be a good nominee who will be soundly defeated by Obama but the polls are showing rick and Mitt about the same against Obama and many still remember Reagan and how the dems thought he would be an easy victory for Carter. They are worried that rick’s conservatism will reawaken the majority but at the same time Rick believes in som many things that the media finds outdated they can’t for the life of them think he stands a chance of beating Obama. So you have a ying and yang to the media one moment they are rooting for rick to take ouot Mitt who is well funded and in the next the ghosts of Reagan and McCain comes to them and they wish to destroy Rick and raise up the liberal Mitt as the sure loser against Obama. It all comes from an inability to understand the majority in this country.

My point exactly…But I still look at a win is a win…The only Santorum can say if he loses is “I almost won”. How far can that take him?
rich801 on February 25, 2012 at 9:57 AM
but that won’t be the narrative. the narrative if Mitt wins a close race will be Mitt almost lost.
