Is Rick Santorum the Sharron Angle of 2012?
You see, right-wing, socially conservative pundits don’t actually have to win elections, but experienced senators and party operatives who know how to win races outside Republican strongholds aren’t putting their heads in the sand. Santorum’s views and persona have limited appeal in a general election, and they know it.
There are, of course, many problems with the knight-in-shining-armor plan. Romney wouldn’t necessarily get out of the race, and the not-Santorum vote would then be subdivided. A new candidate who actually wants to run and hasn’t stood up the party at the altar would have to be located. And the knight might not be so popular with actual voters.
But put that aside for the moment. There is no “back-up” plan circulating if Romney wins. The assumption is that he’d do fine in a general election, so there’s no need to find a knight to block him from the nomination. But for Santorum, the opposite is true: His nomination, experienced Republicans know, would sink the party.

I dunno’, is Mitt Romney the John McCain of 2012?

If Santorum is Sharaon Angle, that makes Romney, who? Justin Bieber?

I am just so tired of these Santorum puff pieces here at Santorum-Support Central./

Yes and yes.
We’re screwed, 2012.
BacaDog on February 20, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Maybe it isn’t hate. Maybe it’s a desire to see the GOP candidate have at least a chance to win in 2012. Rick Santorum doesn’t have a chance.
Rational Thought on February 20, 2012 at 8:36 AM
This lady is single handedly pushing more voters to Santorum with her over the top rhetoric.
Santorum isn’t perfect, but he’s not the nutjob this Romney proxy makes him out to be.
Carlos C on February 20, 2012 at 8:39 AM
All we lack now is the “you all look alike” moment and yes he’ll be just like her…LOL

None of our candidates has a chance. We’re going to lose. We’ll lose by 17 points with the best one. We’ll know by 1PM on election day. President Obama will be gracious to the loser. The loser will give his concession speech at 2PM. The First lady will wear a blue dress. It’ll rain the next day but be cool and sunny the weekend following.

Rubin is no different from the Democrat media assassins going after Santorum.
She uses their same weak talking points that include the unverified ABC story about “top Republicans” who do not want Santorum and the meme that Santorum is trying to return women to the fifties.
Disgusting.
She is a shameless shill who will peddle any smear.
If her boy Romney cannot even carry Michigan is she suggesting that we toss out Santorum and go find somebody new….?
That is insane.

Is Jennifer Rubin the Debbie Wasserman Schults of the Republican Elite?
vityas on February 20, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Or, maybe it is a power play for control of the future of the party. The establishment GOP does not want a social conservative anywhere near the levers of power–they only want them at the levers of the voting booth for their guy. Folks who are both social and fiscal conservatives have had enough of being controlled by establishment hacks, and those hacks are having a hard time hiding their disdain for a large contingent of the republican party. I’m at the point of changing my affiliation from republican to conservative independent. The way the establishment has helped Romney to destroy other republican candidates is beyond disgusting to me, and I want no part of it.

Can’t argue with the truth. His nomination would be a disaster for the GOP. Ron Paul has a better chance of attracting swing voters. And he’d be a better President as well.

The problem with theh Sharon Angle meme is that it appears that Angle actually won, but Harry Reid’s supporters stole the election with “votes” from illegal aliens.
ITguy on February 20, 2012 at 8:53 AM
Not just well said but the core of the matter. Social Conservatives are ready to support the nominee. Progressive Republicans on the other hand seem to be only interested in using the election to push us further from their party.
Just click my screen name for one alternative.

Spot on. Reminds me of the gal here who hated O’Donnell soooo much that she drove me to the insanity of donating to her campaign.
Now, to fight the urge off this time, I have to imagine Rubin is really a secret Obama supporter, or a useful stooge, either of which fit well with both the deceptiveness of the Left and her employment at the WaPo.

Interesting as I had already decided that if Romney is the nominee and doesn’t have a strong well-rounded conservative on the ticket with him, I will vote for the conservative party candidate or, reluctantly, for the libertarian on election day. My husband and I, like many others, have evolved over the years in our politics. We both started out as liberals due to our Massachusetts upbringing, then evolved into independents when we moved to the south, and now consider ourselves to be social/fiscal conservatives. We are both tea party supporters as well. Needless to say, we are both getting plenty disgusted with the republican party and no longer feel that it is a good fit for us.
KickandSwimMom on February 20, 2012 at 9:04 AM
You could be describing me, Kick. Poor but liberal family in PA. Became an Independent when I joined The Army and full up Republican when Reagan pushed me to Conservatism. This decade though has taught me exactly what you stated so succinctly above. They only want our vote.
hawkdriver on February 20, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Santorum is outside the mainstream on social issues and is at significant risk of being Palinized by the Obama smear machine. This “Republican war on contraception” meme now circulating in the MSM is just an appetizer for what is in store for Santorum if he secures the nomination.
While I’m a Romney guy myself, I admit my guy has his own problems–not rhe least of which is a persistent authenticity gap that has thus far prevented him from “closing the sale” with primary voters. That said, nothing about Romney inspires the kind of terror in socially moderate women & independents that a caricatured “radical right wing Christian who wants to force women to put aspirin pills between their knees” will. Sure, Romney may well lose to Obama, but the margin of loss will be lower and we may still succeed in capturing the Senate and retaining our House majority. That stuff matters, too.
Outlander on February 20, 2012 at 9:12 AM
And where do you conclude that Santorum has no chance while Mittens does? The polls? There isn’t much of a gap between the two lately, and in some key states like Ohio, Rick’s actually polling better. We know it ain’t voter enthusiasm. Santorum would do far better to turn out the vote amongst conservatives than Romney. And the appeal to independents argument is losing its luster now that Romney’s numbers with them are beginning to tank.
I still fail to see where this electability argument comes from. There is nothing Romney has over Santorum aside from money and organization and those have meant diddly squat in most of the states thus far. And don’t tell me if the economy is bad, that Mittens is our best candidate. Because if the economy sucks come November, the GOP will win the White House regardless of who’s on the ballot.
Doughboy on February 20, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Let’s not insult Sharon Angle by comparing her to Santorum.
DRayRaven on February 20, 2012 at 9:17 AM
This would be the same experienced Senators and party operatives that gave us Bob Dole, John McCain, and muzzled the McCain running mate, right? Those ones who know how to win elections?
AZfederalist on February 20, 2012 at 9:24 AM
I agree entirely. Romney, for whatever reason, hits like a girl when it comes to trying to land a punch on Obama. His business background is nice, but it almost seems irrelevant if he doesn’t have any idea about how to get things done in DC. Almost as important, Romney is a truly uninspiring candidate. He’s a shallow guy who couldn’t connect with voters even if you gave him an ocean of Crazy Glue.
BuckeyeSam on February 20, 2012 at 9:35 AM
How true. Let’s not forget that in 2010 Senate Minority Leader McConnel backed Rand Paul’s opponent in the Kentucky GOP primary. What was that guy’s name? Oh, yeah, Trey Grayson. Nice pick, Turkey Neck.
BuckeyeSam on February 20, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Regarding that business background, that’ll mean d-ck in the general election. Name me the last successful businessman to win the Presidency. Good luck thinking of one in the last half century cuz he don’t exist. And even worse, Mittens’ massive wealth, his ties to Wall Street, and his propensity for asinine remarks like not being concerned about the very poor will make him a ripe target for Obama and his surrogates in their class warfare campaign.
It’s frankly amazing to see all the hysteria some are having over Santorum being demagogued for his social views when Romney will be just as easily mocked and smeared over his business record. And to make matters worse, social issues will be a non-factor in this election whereas economics and wealth will be at the forefront, and Santorum at least can articulate his social conservatism while Romney is stuck regurgitating platitudes and slogans when he has to defend capitalism and the free market.
Doughboy on February 20, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Worse, because at least Sharon Angle could honestly identify herself as a Tea Party member. If Santorum ever attempted that, I’d either die from laughter or from choking.
MadisonConservative on February 20, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Obvious much Jen?
I guess since Rick Perry dropped out, Santorum is her favorite new chew toy.
Why does anyone take Romney’s lap dog seriously?

hawkdriver on February 20, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Big difference. John McCain lost a race the GOP was pretty much destined to lose.
Sharon Angle took a race that was the GOP was supposed to win, and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Romney isn’t Reagan either. No one is Reagan. Not even Reagan. Even it he was we wouldn’t recognize it because the myth we’ve built around him is unobtainable. Reagan was a Pragmatist. Pragmatism is dead on the Right…
