…yet Blowhard Newt is still more believable as a conservative than Mittwit, who’s trying to claim a “Come to Conservatism” moment in 2006 after a lifetime spent projectile-vomiting on Reagan and the party base. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

I’m not a social conservative. What bothers me about Newt is that he is ethically challenged, cheating on two wives (probably three) means he will probably cheat on his country as well.

Except this isn’t borne out by his time as Speaker. He’s no Palin-like anti-corruption crusader, but he generally wasn’t a political dirtbag either. When he promised the base the Contract with America, he largely delivered.
The guy was pretty successful in his day and might be able to do it again. People keep glossing over his Speakership as though he were John Boehner.
It’s comical because New Hampshire is rated one of the freest States in the Union. I think most people who support big government conservatives are still into the whole moral restrictive aspects of archaic conservatism that attempted to prevent evolution from being taught in school, for example.
Kriggly on January 23, 2012 at 2:10 AM
Only a New Hampshire “conservative” would consider it “freedom” to have the state mandate for all children a curriculum of “education” in something many parents disapprove of. I believe that “freest state” ranking was also based on New Hampshire’s mandate of recognition for gay marriage and lack of regulation on abortion.

I love the “contract” idea. Newt isn’t asking you to vote for him because he looks Presidential. He puts a list of things out there and says “vote for me and I will do these things on this list”. He makes it clear what he is offering, and the voters make it clear what they expect of him. And no way could any Democrat counter with their own contract without laying all their evil devices bare.

Actually that would be highlighting Obama’s own failure or complimenting Mitt’s governance. Fine with me. I’ll take that over Newt’s serial infidelity and other moral dilemmas any day.
The “family values” thing will become the main line of attack. Republicans will be ridiculed and laughed at and rightfully so for picking a serial adulterer to head the so-called party of values.

If SC was willing to overlook Newt’s past, as conservative as they are, why do you think moderates and democrats, the ones who favor same sex marriage, abortion, gays serving openly in the military, etc., would care about that in the general? You just said yourself you are not a social conservative, why are you so sure people who are think that is more important than making the changes needed to get things back in order in this country? You keep saying “party of values”. You don’t believe in them yourself but you are trying to hold other people to them. Isn’t that one of the Alinsky tactics?
Yeah, all 84 charges were found to be without merit over a decade ago but you’re so desperate to trash “the enemy” that you’ll bring up vindictive charges that were found to be without merit in the hopes that it will help your own merit-less candidate — who is sinking all on his own. It seems you’re the one with the shoddy ethical standards, Go RBNY.

This doesn’t even make any sense. Newt’s support core is the fiscally conservative Tea Party, not social conservatives. I’m not sure why you or others keep rambling on about “family values” in an election about national bankruptcy. It has about as much relevance as complaining about Newt’s stance on the war in Iraq.
Is the idea that if you keep screaming about the divorces, theoretical “values voters” will suddenly stampede to vote for Romney? Before doing that, you might want to consider looking at polls listing which issues voters consider most important in this election. Without even looking for any, I bet I can list the top two concerns:
1. Jobs
2. The economy
Besides, liberal Republicans and Democrats don’t care about “family values” anyway except as a tool to bash conservatives with, so I hardly think they will be “laughing” at him. Instead, I imagine they’ll laugh at us for electing Mitt Romney, a man who will “ethically” lead us into national bankruptcy.
For the record, I will likely be one of those voters who have an unfavorable view of Newt but still vote for him in the Primary, once the Primary gets around to my new home state of Texas, for reasons I already covered in this thread 3 hours ago.
Newt Gingrich: serial cheater, a man of questionable ethics (being kind here), former supporter of a health care mandate, and shared a couch with Pelosi.
Mitt Romney: former supporter of health care mandate, robotic demeanor, alleged flippy floppy behavior, and accused of being a corporate raider…by a self-professed capitalist (Gingrich), no less.
Are we talking about Newt’s 83rd charge of ethics violation or the 84th charge? Or are we talking about one of the other 82 ethics charges? There were so damn many. Can you be more specific?

The problem with this scenario is that Gingrich is toxic to independents and swing democrats. He was demonized throughout the 90s and is probably the least electable out of the whole bunch.
Another problem with Gingrich rising in the polls the way he has is that he HAS used class warfare to do it which is a greater betrayal of free market values than any other other major Republican candidate has even come close to doing in my memory. Paul and Romney supporters are mainly of the economic wing of the party and are feeling quite shocked….let me put it this way(to social conservatives). It’s as if Newt was calling for gay marriage…..and rising in the polls because if it…. that’s how it feels. People can say they wont vote for Romney or Paul or Santorum for various things in November which I always thought was stupid as it was basically like voting for Obama but Gingrich has given a principled reason to not vote for him if he is the nominee…selling out using leftwing language to try and gain the nomination should not be supported by any principled Republican.
You combine these two things and it’s becoming a suicide march for the GOP in November.
In short, a serial philanderer who has been convicted of ethics violations and doesn’t stand out as the most conservative of the bunch and has used leftist language to gain support is moving into frontrunner status in a race the GOP must win as things are crumbling in the US with the most left wing president of our lifetime. Anyone supporting Gingrich really has to give their heads a shake and get back into reality.
Gingrich should not win…..and if he does it’s a lose/lose scenario as the Republican party has sold it’s soul to do it.
I fully expect most Mittbots will not vote or will vote for Obama.
Raquel Pinkbullet on January 23, 2012 at 2:44 AM
here is the rub. I reallty don’t think it matters if they do. Most of the Mitt supporters live in the northeast. the GOp will not win NJ, NY, PA, MA, NH, VT anyhow. So them sitting home or voting for Obama isn’t a big deal. If Mitt is the nominee however and the non mittbots stay home or vote for Obama then the gop loses NC, VA, FL, GA which means the gop loses. We don’t need the northeast. they don’t matter for a GOP victory why do we care what the NE wants. They haven’t been powerful enough to carry their states for the gop since Reagan. They should never get a nominee they like.

Zybalto on January 23, 2012 at 7:17 AM
The problem is someone has to win. And it had better be Gingrich as opposed to Romney and Obama, since national bankruptcy is pretty much guaranteed with Romney and Obama.
Can I boil it down to one sentence? Who do you trust more to “tell it like it is”, Mitt or Newt?
I would prefer that Ronald Reagan could be revived to run. Unfortunately, we’re left with Mitt and Newt. I’ll take Newt and won’t have to “pinch my nose”, when voting, quite as hard as I did for McCain.

They say that because Mittens is Obama light. Once you get that figured out, you will understand why they support Mittens.
watertown on January 23, 2012 at 3:33 AM
Yup. Have fun talking about this and the rest of Newt’s wonderful past for the rest of the year if he gets the nomination, instead of the economy. I’m sure we’ll all be well versed in the merits of each of the 84 ethics charges and other personal matters by November. Hell there’s practically one for every day leading up to the election. Good luck, champ.
Go RBNY on January 23, 2012 at 3:38 AM
Actually that would be highlighting Obama’s own failure or complimenting Mitt’s governance. Fine with me. I’ll take that over Newt’s serial infidelity and other moral dilemmas any day.
Go RBNY on January 23, 2012 at 3:43 AM
If SC was willing to overlook Newt’s past, as conservative as they are, why do you think moderates and democrats, the ones who favor same sex marriage, abortion, gays serving openly in the military, etc., would care about that in the general? You just said yourself you are not a social conservative, why are you so sure people who are think that is more important than making the changes needed to get things back in order in this country? You keep saying “party of values”. You don’t believe in them yourself but you are trying to hold other people to them. Isn’t that one of the Alinsky tactics?
Night Owl on January 23, 2012 at 3:47 AM
Yeah, all 84 charges were found to be without merit over a decade ago but you’re so desperate to trash “the enemy” that you’ll bring up vindictive charges that were found to be without merit in the hopes that it will help your own merit-less candidate — who is sinking all on his own. It seems you’re the one with the shoddy ethical standards, Go RBNY.
John Hitchcock on January 23, 2012 at 3:49 AM
Doomberg on January 23, 2012 at 4:10 AM

THANKS GOP!!!!!

Your state voted for Kerry and Obama. You voted for Clinton twice and W beat Gore by a single point. In Presidential elections with the high turnout, you are blue as a smurf. You’re worthless.

Like it’s been stated and said a hundred times…. Jesus isn’t running. There are 4 choices. None of them great. We got what we got. It is what it is.
I had my moments where I told myself I wasn’t going to vote for Romney if he was the nominee… but they were just moments. Whoever the nominee is, I am going to enthusiastically support them and hopefully I will have the luxury down the road of wringing my hands of their imperfections once Obama is out of office and our economy and liberty is on the road to recovery.

So when does Murdock Media jump on the Newt Train?
james23 on January 23, 2012 at 7:03 AM
Ahh the spin. So many that claim they are committed conservatives willing to settle for Newt. You’re as bad as those you criticize.
Newt is not a conservative . Back to the lesser of the two I mean four evils. I am so excited./
CW on January 23, 2012 at 7:04 AM
Since when are elections about the issues? The left will definitely use Newt’s infidelity as a way to paint him and Republicans as hypocrites. Nothing energizes and excites liberals more than conservative hypocrisy.
Go RBNY on January 23, 2012 at 7:16 AM

Newt understands conservatism and connects with conservative voters.
Mitt understands conservatism as a concept in a textbook, and does not connect.
Newt will lose by 15+ points to Obama, and Mitt may not even get the nomination.
Time to preserve the House and try to win the Senate.
sDs61678 on January 23, 2012 at 7:20 AM
here is the rub.

You’re right, Newt sucks. Fortunately, we can still vote for the worst Republican candidate remaining, Romney!!!
The problem is someone has to win. And it had better be Gingrich as opposed to Romney and Obama, since national bankruptcy is pretty much guaranteed with Romney and Obama.
Doomberg on January 23, 2012 at 7:43 AM
Are RBNY and the other Mittbots so naive as to think that the media will not trash ANY candidate the GOP puts out there?
That’s sad, if true.

ABO in 2012 and Lt. Col. Allen West in 2016.
