Scarborough: Conservative leaders all tell me they want a brokered convention
WILLIE GEIST: Given everything you’ve said, do you think Newt Gingrich could become the Republican nominee for president, or is it still Mitt Romney’s?
JOE SCARBOROUGH: I think, and this is my opinion, I think Newt–something’s happened here, by the way–there’s a reason why–remember after Iowa I said that if Mitt wins Iowas there’s going to be a revolt among conservatives?–well Newt is the vessel that people like Sarah Palin and others who want a brokered convention are riding right now. And they want to keep this going. And when it looks like Newt gets a little ahead, they’ll find another vessel. The Republicans–I’ve said it before–they want a brokered convention. And Newt is the next step there. Do you guys think, have you guys heard, has anybody said in the Republican establishment, “man, I want Newt to be our nominee”?

My question is, who would we get?

Romney campaign is circulating a fake CNN e-mail claiming Newt forced wife to have an abortion.
tetriskid on January 20, 2012 at 1:04 PM
You can thank Michelle Malkin and the other purity pimps for the lousy field of remaining candidates. There wouldn’t be a desire for a brokered convention if the good candidates had not been driven away.
Vashta.Nerada on January 20, 2012 at 1:07 PM
“Republican leaders?”
Joe’s been talking to the old cleaning woman in his building who voted for Nixon again.

Romney, or Paul?
This is exactly the kind of dishonest nonsense Paul cultists are famous for.

I have a hard time believing conservatives are telling Joe anything.

They want to emulate the outstanding electoral success of Sarah Palin in 2008, when she was single handily responsible for Obama’s victory.
Hey, bratty socons gave Obama one term. Why not two?

Fake CNN email used as dirty trick in South Carolina
tetriskid on January 20, 2012 at 1:13 PM
I dunno if the base or the establishment is collectively desiring a “brokered convention”, but I think most informed primary voters are aware that if Mitt wins SC this nomination contest is over, and no one is comfortable with the primaries effectively ending yet. I would personally prefer that Mitt, Newt, Rick, and Ron be sharing the debate stage at least through March. Whoever emerges the victor of a lengthy campaign will be better for it.

In other news, the Wall Street Journal reports on Mitt Romney’s “unconventional[ly]” massive IRA: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204468004577168972507188592.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories
This is why Romney needs to release his tax returns.
Lawdawg86 on January 20, 2012 at 1:17 PM
That is probably what happened.
Ron Paul people probably did it since they are the most likely to do something like this.
But South Carolina politics are dirty.
tetriskid on January 20, 2012 at 1:17 PM
You know who a brokered convention benefits? Sarah Palin. After than? Barack Obama.
She’s an stone cold opportunist who is pushing the lefty demands Mitt release his tax returns now (which it is not at all the way it has been done historically), as well as implying there could be something nefarious about his years at Bain Capital. It only serves to prove to me that my instincts about her (which really came to a head after her Iowa speech where she attacked our GOP candidates) being have been right all along. She has moved from the “dislike” to “loathe” category while Newt moved from “like” to “loathe”.

Sarah Palin is an idiot and an embarrassment. However, it really would have been great if she would have run. She’d be pulling the same numbers as Flopney, maybe a little bit less. And if she did somehow win the nomination, her 20+ pt defeat in the general would have been hilarious. And hopefully would have shut up ignorant so-cons for a cycle or two. As it is, NOTHING good is coming from the 2012 election. In fact with Flopney being the Republican standard bearer, and losing, so-cons will use that to push a more so-con agenda than they are now…
Daikokuco on January 20, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Or Palin!
ConservativePartyNow on January 20, 2012 at 1:18 PM
This is the big question. I have seen brokered conventions and they are not pretty. It would mean our guys would waste all their money on the primaries and have nothing left for the general election.
That would give One-bama and 1 billion dollar advantage.
NickDeringer on January 20, 2012 at 1:19 PM
ding ding ding….
cmsinaz on January 20, 2012 at 1:19 PM
tetriskid, the link you posted says NOTHING about Romney being the source of the fake e-mail. Do you have a source for your claim that this fake e-mail came from the “Romney campaign” (as you state in your first post), or are you deliberately lying?
diditagain on January 20, 2012 at 1:19 PM
PROVE IT or STFU.

A brokered convention would never, never produce a Palin candidacy.
Abby Adams on January 20, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Given the choices we have now, if we’re really, really lucky they’ll hand out the nomination as a door prize at the convention. We could scarcely do worse!

Your PDS is amusing….:)
Will you blame Sarah Palin when Mittens loses in SC?

I’ve seen quite a few people here suggesting that Romney should release his tax returns. But they’re probably all left-wing kooks, right?
Romney said he’d release his tax returns if he’s the nominee. I’m fine with that and I’m not a Romney supporter whatsoever. I believe him when he said he’s paid his taxes.

Flora Duh on January 20, 2012 at 1:25 PM
You are usually one of the more reasonable Mittbots, but I guess the last 48 hours have gotten to you sensibilities too.
I am a huge fan of Sarah and would prefer her to anyone else in the field without question. However, to suggest that she is somehow responsible for Mittens total meltdown in SC is ludicris. If he can’t handle softball questions about his Tax Returns and his past at Bain, that is his problem.
Norwegian on January 20, 2012 at 1:25 PM
tetriskid, your first post doesn’t say that “local South Carolina blogs and Twitter are fingering him [Romney]” — it incorrectly states as a fact that the Romney campaign is responsible. So do your own f*cking homework.
diditagain on January 20, 2012 at 1:26 PM
The only way we get a brokered convention is if Newt looks like he is going to win and the GOP decides to just ignore the election results to install Romney. I don’t think even the Stupid Party is THAT dumb.
Yes, that’s it. All of Palin’s support came from bible-thumping, gap toothed so-con hicks. It couldn’t POSSIBLY be because Tea Partiers (you know, those Taxed Enough Already guys) were looking for someone who might save us from national bankruptcy, shut down Obama’s healthcare wrecking scheme, and remove the most corrupt president of our lifetimes.
Doomberg on January 20, 2012 at 1:26 PM
We have a little tradition in America where the burden of proof is on the accuser, not the accused. So, put up or shut up.

That would force me to leave the GOP for ever. Truce Daniels is even worse than Mittens.
Norwegian on January 20, 2012 at 1:31 PM
It really amazes me how many ignorant liberal Republicans and Democrats think the Tea Party is some sort of secret front group for social conservatives.
Hint: Taxed Enough Already.
Furthermore, can you provide ANY actual evidence that “socons” caused McCain to lose the election in 2008? The conservatives in revolt against the GOP were in revolt because of Harriet Miers, because of Bush’s out of control spending, and because of the amnesty debacle.
Big government Republicans need to recognize basic reality. THEY are the reason the Tea Party exists, it’s not because of some social conservative conspiracy to pose as a group of spending cutters.
Doomberg on January 20, 2012 at 1:32 PM
That’s fine. I don’t want any GOP candidate or opportunist using David Axelrod’s talking points to “win”. This began with Palin’s Iowa speech and the ball was picked up by the guy who was blackmailed by Bill Clinton whom she fantasizes about voting for.
